Few anarchist projects have embodied this spirit better, or for longer than our friends at the CrimethInc. Ex-Worker's Collective. Under different names, under their name, and often under no name at all, we have worked with CrimethInc. dozens of times in the past decade.

Regarding our stencils: Although very rewarding (as in, there may be a reward issued for your arrest), our stencils are not as easy to use as our stickers, and take a craftier hand.

Learn some pitfalls of spraypainting stencils and the lingo associated with them:

toy /tɔɪ/n, adj. (infml., disapprov) 1. a novice graffiti writer 2. a piece of graffiti that gives the appearance that a novice graffiti writer created it. Can be improved with practice, calm demeanor, smooth movements, and technique

overspray /ˈoʊ.vɚspreɪ/n when paint goes over and outside of the stencil, which betrays lack of confidence as well as competence. Can be avoided if one holds the paint can closer to the surface, or if one increases the size of the paint mask (Municipal Adhesives includes 2 pieces of cardstock in every stencil order to be used for this purpose: tape them to the sides/top/bottom). See the illustration for an example of overspray.

underspray /ˈʌn.dɚspreɪ/n when paint gets under your stencil, obscuring the intended paint mask and making it more difficult to read or interpret the piece. Can be avoided by using less paint (it is surprising how little paint you'll need; one more coat won't help!), holding the paint can farther away from the surface (8 inches is a good distance), and pushing the stencil against the surface with a gloved finger. See the illustration for an example of underspray.

clean /kliːn/adj. all spraypainted stencil pieces contain both underspray and overspray. A clean spray is one that minimizes both as much as possible, maintaining clarity of the image and legibility of the text.

Go with a comrade, so that one of you can look out while the other paints. This will minimize the rushing and fear that cause toy mistakes as well as keep you out of the hands of the Jakes or other interference.

I want to add that, if you're good on stickering but not sure about spray paint yet, there's a biodegradable, food safe product called Color Mist that comes in small, pocketable containers and bright colors that you spray just like paint. It comes off eventually, so if you mess up and jiggle the stencil all the time (me) or if you just want some deniability (coward, don't worry, you'll get over it), color mist is good enough.
