Certainly what they ought not be doing is what Westminster does. If you look carefully at the offside front wheel of the Volvo, you can see the remains of the old bay markings; Westminster enlarged them all by Β±30 cms because wankpanzers have got bigger.
Just put tickets on them. It will encourage owners to buy more carefully next time.
@apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 βRoad legal' doesn't excuse illegal parking. I once owned a 5m long car, it was road legal, I couldn't always fit it in parking spaces, I had to park elsewhere.
@baoigheallain @apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 while excessively large vehicles are a hazard, car dimensions have grown in since a lot of parking standards were defined. Not all of this is down to penis replacement vehicles, there have also been increases in width due to increases on safety measures (just look at a 1980 car door Vs 2020 to see the thickness changes).
While reduced car usage is a good thing, small parking bays risk discriminating against people of reduced mobility.
@apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 This problem is made worse by modern carsβ low profile tyres and easily damaged expensive alloys. You can see the owner of the Volvo in the above pic has parked about 30 cm from the kerb to avoid scuffing their precious alloys.
@baoigheallain @apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 it would be good to have a national standard for a city car. And anybody who operates a vehicle wider or larger than the standard knows they cannot park in municipal spaces. If larger spaces are to be provided, they should be at a greatly increased cost.
@mgleadow This has happened to me before too. To try to avoid it, I started replying after the first username, leaving the rest at the bottom after a blank line... like here!
Iβm all for considering the interconnections. The street in my linked post is known to me because that was my daughter's cycle to her primary school. The council made that road Β±60cm narrower during her time at that school, which badly impacted on her journey.

@etchedpixels @baoigheallain @apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 that's... rather a jump from my shared observations. I think either you don't grasp the interconnectedness of policy decisions and are viewing from a self centric point of view only, or you enjoy attempting to escalate decisions. Regardless, it's not an approach to debate I shall expend more effort on.
@apicultor @cstross @Nicovel0 Yes and no. Fewer of them would be better but when councils, like Westminster here, take Β±60cm of the road, others such as cyclists suffer.

These drivers are asking for Β£65 tickets.

20 ton trucks are also road-legal, and yet.

Letting cars grow has interconnected problems.
