@darkguyman There isn't much I can't do with open source that I can do with commercial software, hence the motive for pirating it isn't there. I used to prefer adobe premier to kdenlive for example, but not so much for what it can do but for the user interface which I found superior, and I was even willing to BUY it when it was for sale but damned if I'll pay a monthly extortion fee.

Me and my ex broke up a month and a half ago and we’ve still been good friends and still had some sort of sexual relationship (we are 7 hours long distance). I was the one who carried so much hope and beat myself over it but I think I want to stop talking to him once and for all. I still love and care for him so much but I’ve fought and drained myself so hard the past two months my heart physically hurts. I know he see’s no hope in us and has said it himself which hurt me so much. And I always felt like there was hope so I would keep trying. But lately I’ve been feeling like his effort has diminished, which I get since we aren’t in a relationship like that anymore but even me being excited to tell him about my day and he’s just on his computer not replying or showing any emotions makes me feel belittled. I always listen to him. So this hurts the most. I’ve always felt shut out growing up so this triggers me so much. I told him about it last night and he said he’s knows he does it sometimes cuz he’s “working” but doesn’t know how to fix it. I simply said, it takes two minutes of your time to just listen. Had a similar problem on Pop_OS. Seemed to be an nvidia diver issue. Suspend would stop working after a driver update and sometimes go away after another update. This happened 2 or 3 times. There were also some logs about nvidia suspend issues. My troubleshooting was unsuccessful and iirc, it was complicated to keep pop from updating so I eventually swapped nvidia for amd and it stopped being an issue.

After a Reddit user posted a photo of the new height setting in the Tinder app, a company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the discovery setting has been launched as a global test.
Tinder Gold and Premium subscribers in the test group will have access to the feature, but not free users, we’re told. In addition, the setting will indicate a preference, rather than functioning as a “hard filter,” the company says. That means it won’t actually block or exclude profiles but instead inform recommendations.

Speaking at an event promoting his new book, Clegg said the creative community should have the right to opt out of having their work used to train AI models. But he claimed it wasn’t feasible to ask for consent before ingesting their work first.

Yeah that’s a big part of it…shifting off the stuff that we don’t think is important (and probably isn’t). My view is that it’s escalated to where I’m using my phone calculator for stuff I did in my head in high school (I was a cashier in HS so it was easy)…which is also not a big deal but getting a little bigger than the phone number thing. From there, what if I used it to leverage a new programming API as opposed to using the docs site. Probably not a big deal but bigger than the calculator thing to me. My point is that it’s all these little things that don’t individually matter but together add up to some big changes in the way we think. We are outsourcing our thinking which would be helpful if we used the free capacity for higher level thinking but I’m not sure if we will.

The Gospel of Phiber Optik or, How to Get Thrown in Prison for Knowing Shit
It begins like a lot of the old-school kick-ass digital legends, with a phone line and a curious teen. Tho I wanna say that I was a curious teen too, but just not curious in any productive way. I was too busy thinking about girls, jerking off to my step-mom’s underwear, and trying to survive the dull ache of being a loser in a town where nothing ever happened.
Sometimes I wonder how different it could’ve been if someone had handed me a clue, or a keyboard, or a reason to dig deeper. Brothers, I had the spark, but no kindling. Just a lot of static and the sense that I showed up too late. I shoulda started my Universal Monk “let’s piss off Lemmy every day while I hack into my OLPC and try to install Linux Puppy on it in the background!” persona way before I got old.
But fuck it, let’s talk about Phiber Optik.
In the early 1980s, Mark Abene, a soft-spoken kid from Queens, New York, discovered that the boring ass sound of a dial tone held secrets. Abene’s first contact with computers came around the age of nine, inside a department store where he would hang around while his parents wandered the aisles. The machines were just sitting there, blinking and waiting for someone curious enough to poke them. His first personal system was a TRS-80 MC-10, a tiny rig with 4 kilobytes of RAM, no lowercase letters, a 32-column screen, and a cassette deck that hissed and clunked as it loaded and saved programs. Like a lot of machines back then, it hooked up to the family television, turning it into a crude but functional portal to somewhere else.
Later, after his parents gifted him a RAM upgrade and a 300 baud modem, the real doors opened. Through CompuServe and its wild little corner called the CB Simulator, he found others like him. People who knew how to reach dialup bulletin board systems. From there he stumbled into guest accounts on DEC minicomputers used in the BOCES educational system in Long Island.
These machines ran operating systems with names like RSTS/E and TOPS-10 and they were a whole different universe compared to the TRS-80. Abene saw what they could do and decided to teach himself how to speak their language.
He pulled books from the library and started reading everything he could find on code. What hit him hardest was the realization that he could write something, log out, come back the next day, and it would still be there. His modest little computer setup had become a window, and on the other side of it was a world worth chasing.
Long before the term cybersecurity existed, Abene had already started burrowing into the veins of the American telecom system, decoding its logic not to destroy it, but to understand how it ticked.
His handle became ‘Phiber Optik,’ and in the grubby wire-y underbelly of the hacker scene he was damn near mythic. People talked about him with reverence or anger, depending on which side of the firewall you were on. To the kids trading exploits in IRC tunnels, he was a digital folk hero, one keyboard away from legend. To the feds, he was a glowing red dot on the radar, a walking middle finger to everything they couldn’t control.
What makes Phiber’s story relevant now, decades after his sentencing, is not just his technical brilliance. It is that he represented an ethical spine to a culture the public has long dismissed as criminal.
As pirate and privacy movements claw their way back into the spotlight, fueled by surveillance capitalism, corporate chokeholds, and the slow suffocation of open access, the old bones of Phiber Optik’s blueprint are starting to show through again. What he sketched in the static of the early 90s wasn’t just a kind of road map, it was a warning, half-forgotten, now suddenly relevant as hell.
After all, doesn’t all information want to be free?
Phiber was a member of two infamous hacking groups. First, he joined the Legion of Doom, a group that had already made its mark exploring the digital frontier of the telephone networks. Later, he co-founded Masters of Deception, or MOD, a New York-based collective that was as much a cultural counterpoint as it was a technical one. MOD went deeper into the cracks of AT&T and the broader infrastructure of early corporate networks. They said that their goal was to explore and document, not destroy.
As the Cold War fizzled and the Information Age kicked its boots up on the desk, the suits and corporations realized the growing value of digital systems. The government’s attitude toward hackers hardened. Home computers were no longer toys. They were infrastructure, currency, control. And suddenly, guys like Phiber weren’t curious kids anymore.
In January 1990, the Secret Service kicked in Phiber Optik’s door. He was just 17. They seized his gear and accused him of causing a massive AT&T network crash that had hit the country a week earlier. Phiber stood there while they ransacked his place, accused on the spot of bringing down part of the backbone of America’s phone system. Weeks later, AT&T admitted the crash had been their fault. A botched software update. No hackers involved. Just bad code and corporate silence.
That didn’t stop the momentum. In February 1991, he was arrested again, this time under New York state law, charged with computer tampering and computer trespass. He was still a minor. The legal system was scrambling to define what counted as a crime in the new digital frontier. Phiber ended up taking a plea to a lesser misdemeanor and served 35 hours of community service. The scare should have ended there. It didn’t.
By December 1991, the feds were ready for round two. Phiber Optik and four other members of Masters of Deception were arrested again. In July 1992, a federal grand jury hit them with an 11-count indictment. This time, the charges stuck. The government leaned on wiretaps. It was the first time in U.S. history they had used legally authorized taps to capture the voices and data transmissions of hackers. They weren’t trying to protect infrastructure. They were trying to make a point.
Despite no evidence of damage or theft, Phiber was sentenced to a year in federal prison. Again, no theft or damage. Just knowledge. Just access. But still, they had to fucking put him in a cage. They needed a scalp. He fit the frame. He was the first hacker convicted under the newly expanded federal computer crime laws.
The punishment was widely seen as symbolic. Phiber was articulate, clean-cut, and openly philosophical about the ethics of hacking. That made him dangerous. His case was less about securing systems than it was about sending a message. A warning to those who might try to explore behind the digital curtain without permission.
The trial lit a fuse. What came after was not just fallout. It was a shift. Phiber became the face of a new kind of threat. The hacker. The digital trespasser. The kid who knew too much. The media pounced. Magazines ran articles warning about ghosts in the machine. The New York Times printed his sentencing like it was a mafia takedown.
Today that kind of coverage is common background noise. But back then it hit like an earthquake. Computers were still the realm of hobbyists. Hackers were not yet cool icons or antiheroes. Seeing a story like this break into the mainstream meant the world had started paying attention. Even if it had no clue what it was actually looking at.
Inside the hacker community, he became a martyr for curiosity. Where some hackers sought money or infamy, Phiber was different. He believed in transparency, in challenging authority through knowledge. In many ways, his worldview mirrored what the modern open access and digital piracy movements have adopted.
Fast forward to today, and the landscape looks different but eerily familiar. Information is still locked behind paywalls. Network infrastructure is still protected less by code than by law. The average user remains dependent on gatekeepers for knowledge. Shadow libraries, sideloading communities, and decentralized networks are once again pushing the boundaries.
The ethos that drove Phiber Optik and MOD now animates projects like Library Genesis, Anna’s Archive, and countless torrent communities. These modern movements rely on the idea that access to information should not be controlled by profit motives. That understanding a system deeply is not a threat. That copying is not theft.
Phiber never claimed to be innocent. But he insisted that curiosity was not a crime. He never sold what he accessed. He documented. He learned. He shared. And he did so with the belief that a more transparent digital world was not just preferable, but necessary.
When people talk about the moral framework of piracy now, it’s all about what’s legal and who’s losing money. That’s the surface game. What gets ignored are the roots. The deeper questions. Phiber Optik and the others weren’t just rule-breakers. They were pulling back the curtain and asking who built the rules in the first place. Who benefits. Who decides what we’re allowed to know. They saw the gap widening between the ones who use the machine and the ones who own it. Between those who are fed and those who are kept hungry.
Phiber Optik went back to being Mark Abene and became a respected security consultant. He rebuilt his life above ground. But his impact lives beneath the surface. In Discord forums and dark web mirrors. In data liberation projects and copy-left publishing. In every encrypted message and anonymized torrent. He was there before the internet was sold back to us, back when it was something we made by exploring it together.
Not every hacker is a pirate. But every pirate who copies for access, who shares for freedom, who breaks a rule to question the system, carries the idea of Phiber Optik in their actions. Maybe not in name. But in spirit.
The spark is the same. Curiosity weaponized. Access reclaimed. A middle finger aimed squarely at the gate.
It was never just about phone switches or command lines. What Phiber did and what MOD stood for was proof that systems are built to keep people out, and that anyone willing to understand how those systems work could find a way in.
That blueprint did not vanish. It evolved. The mindset that once pulled secrets from a telecom grid now fuels the mirrors, torrents, and cracks of the modern internet. Bypassing a locked terminal and bypassing digital rights software are cousins in the same bloodline. Digging into AT&T’s infrastructure and scraping paywalled archives both ride the same frequency. The hardware has changed, the language has changed, but the mission is still carved in the same stone.
The kids cracking textbooks and sideloading banned books today may not know Phiber’s name, but they carry his ghost in every act of defiance. Every time they upload something they were told to keep hidden. Every time they share a file just to make sure someone else does not have to go without.
That is the legacy. The culture of piracy did not appear out of thin air. It grew out of old phone lines, library cards, and the belief that knowledge should not come with a price tag.

my quick search for "Blu Ray players" brought up a list. 4 of the first 5 i saw were also "streaming boxes" with wi-fi. the 5th had an Ethernet port. didn't really check further but looks like it's pretty common now.

As soon as they showed the JoyCon mouse control I was hoping there would be support for standard mice. It still doesn't do anything to steer me toward a Switch 2 over a Steam Deck, but it's an excellent move for accessibility.
Funny you mention it, the next large purchase I have planned is a gaming PC to replace my aging 2018 laptop, and I plan on going all-in on Linux. From what I can tell, AMD seems to be the way to go, and as a long time Fedora user, I'm interested in Nobara.

The internet inherently creates information silos, because of the nature of how it works.
Cable TV, Newspapers, the Radio, etc. were all broad-cast networks, as in one person talks and that gets cast broadly to all listeners on the network.
Channels provided some level of user choice in what they listened to, but not very much. At most they still picked between only a handful of different options.
The internet fundamentally isn't a broadcast network though, it's a messaging network. When you publish a video on YouTube it isn't broad cast to every one with an internet channel, instead, the users goes out and looks for the information they want and requests and YouTube sends it back to them.
This inherently creates filter bubbles because the information you receive is based on your own existing preferences and requests, which creates a feedback loop the reinforces your opinions.
What you wrote is probably true, but it's not the end of the story. Ownership model of corporate social media creates incentives to polarize and divide people. It drives engagement and creates moats. Also, billionaire owners of those media have their own political goals, and are happy to use the platforms they own to advance them.
Undoubtedly, but we still chose to come to Lemmy because we visited it and saw a bunch of people that we mostly agreed with on it.
Think about how many Lemmy users block hexbear or lemmy.ml, or would spit in disgust when they visit gab or voat or something.
Users prune those sources because they aren't interested in hearing wildly toxic fringe ideas (or flat out being propagandized to), but it's still fundamentally up to you as a user to decide what you consider rationale and worthy of discussion, and then going forward the content you see on here is only what's shared by very like minded individuals.
Don't get me wrong, I think that Reddit and other corporate owned social media, intentionally promotes rage bait constantly, both in comments and posts, and that drives people to go even more nuts and become more polarized compared to a non-engagement driven algorithm like Lemmy's, but even open and decentralized social media platforms create filter bubbles and information silos.
The Fediverse is great, but perhaps just because of the lack of algorithms and other content-promotion methods I have found it a bit harder to break out of my 'silos' in some places. Lemmy isn't too bad for this, but I've really struggled to find other people to follow and engage with on Mastodon as somebody on a small local instance. Little things like the Mastodon phone app not listing followers from other instances contributes to this.
Just curious to know if anyone has been using the same distro for multiple years/decades and what or if you have it takes for you to want to switch to a different distro?
On my laptops: Debian -> Fedora. Mostly because I couldn't reliably use my external display on Debian, and because I ~~needed~~ wanted shiny new things. Also new hardware.
On my gaming rig: Manjaro -> Nobara -> Bazzite. I left Manjaro because the system was slowly getting worse with each update, and I wanted to game, not maintain my system. I ditched Nobara after a botched version upgrade. Bazzite is fine for now.
I ditched FreeBSD and Slackware when I got tired of installing everything from scratch on every major release. Compiling stuff from source was interesting for learning and seeing how amazing open source can be, but it wasn't fun long term.
Then I ditched Ubuntu because there was always something not working on laptops, usually related to hibernation/sleep and/or webcam/wireless. I was frustrated with how little care was put into making sure such basic things would simply work.
I'm currently very satisfied with Mint. Everything just works out of the box and Mint X is a lovely theme for old folks like me, who appreciate a proper good looking desktop and can't understand what all the hype is with dark/flat themed UIs these days.
Other than massive breakage, I'm not sure. Completely reinstalling and reconfiguring my setup is a pain in the ass, in part because of my slow internet connection. But damn if Ubuntu isn't trying to find out.
Meh. Mint does remove most of Ubuntu's corporate crap, but its update system is still based on Ubuntu's sources but just far enough removed to cause new issues. I'd rather switch to Debian. I actually already have Debian installed in parallel, it's just that actually configuring it with all the non-default bits and pieces of my Ubuntu install is a pain in the ass.
I don't care about my distro. The choice I make when decicing on a distribution is entirely based on use case. I have LMDE on my server. I have Mint Cinnamon on my macbook. I use arch when I'm doing minimal installs for basic functionality. I don't have a distro of choice for ARM, I've used rasbian and I use muOS on my rg35xxsp. I've been looking at learning gentoo and deploying that for raspberry pi as I have some projects in mind for some micro arcade cabinets and want as little overhead as possible in regards to background processes
I've been using openSuSe Tumbleweed on one device or another for quite a while now. Recently I switched my last device, so I'm officially 100% Tumbleweed. NGL, feels pretty good. I would, however, switch under a few circumstances:
openSuSe releases Tumbleweed clone with systemD alternative (like runit). I've tried Void repeatedly, but unfortunately never really fell in live with it.
openSuSe releases NixOS style immutable distro (not the current aeon or kalpa) based ok Tumbleweed.
Honestly, Tumbleweed is nearly perfect for me. It's just that I've tasted what life without systemD can be like, and I goddamn miss it... I'm totally hooked on openSuSe products though.
Boot times. I am the kind of person who shuts my computer (may it be a laptop or desktop) down, whenever I'm not using it. With systemD, boot times are generally kind of annoying; runit, however, completely changes this. It really feels amazing to turn a Void Linux system on, and have it boot in seconds, with just one screen of logs. On top of that, if you're doing a arch-style install (like the Void Linux minimal install), runit is just much nicer and more ergonomic. The main point is really boot time though, which I think is improved due to adhering to the Unix philosophy and having much less bloat. Using a runit system reminds you of how bloated and slow (and kinda convoluted) systemD is.
I'm also the kinda guy who spends hours optimizing my neovim config (~80 plugins, including LSP) for 20 millisecond start-up times. In the end, I still use Tumbleweed though.
I love how you chose one of the prime advertised features of The Cancer -- and my rhel6 could boot faster than rhel7 every day.
By comparison, Systemd feels like jumping on the back of a charging gazelle and hitting it with a salmon in the hopes it'll go the other way, all the while it's bleating and emitting and defecating from its regular port and a whole new journald port of its own choosing. And often tripping.
Runit has been solid and fast. I've seen it on several projects - I want to say alpine and proton/vm and gitlab's own weird setup - and it's never let me down. I wish rh could have seen that instead like I wish they picked James over Mike for automation.
Debian for about two decades: It would take something pretty major to shift me - probably a hostile takeover, major policy shift or commercialisation, none of which is likely.
At worked we shifted from Centos to Rocky for the obvious reason, and are happy with the choice so far.

For the record, I run Linux Mint Xfce with Chicago95. Honestly it was a mistake, the vibes of the UI are nice but it still feels kinda Linuxy (as in, held together with duct tape) and I keep roling up Firefox by mistake. SerenityOS or FreeBSD, something Unix-like, may be more what I'm looking for.
There was a power loss, my PC was on UPS for some time and UPS battery started running low. I initiated the shutdown and systemd stopped it because it could not find a network share on the already stopped server. It didn't gave up so I ended with fucked filesystem because the battery died. Switched to systemd free distro the day after.
I'm on Ubuntu, which I admit is not a popular option around here. But when my power goes out I use apcupsd and a network component to alert my attached or networked Ubuntu machines. When the power first goes out all of my non-essential machines automatically shut down gracefully. When the backup batteries get low enough (I have several separate APC units around the house) my essential machines also shut down automatically.
When the power comes back up one of my machines automatically powers up and runs a few checks before turning most of my other stuff back on.
I have very few power issues which last long enough for my batteries to run out, but when I do the only evidence is a few alerts and the fact that I have to log back into everything. All of my windows restore on my GUI machines, and no filesystem issues occur. It's more seamless than when I ran Windows, granted that was 25 years ago.
I'm similarly not a fan of systemd, but for backup battery and power management it seems to do the trick.
Eh, probably if Guix becomes significantly better I'll switch to it (from NixOS). I really like how seriously they take user freedom, bootstrapping (only 357 bytes of binary to bootstrap everything else from source!) and consistent user interfaces (scheme everywhere). But unfortunately the package repo is just not big and mature enough yet, and declarative configuration options are not as good as they are with NixOS.
Better compatibility with Intel Arc cards, for one. Actually that would be a really big one.

But then I also realised I couldn't boot up any UE5 game because somehow it was convinced my card isn't DX12 compatible. Also major artefacting issues in Oblivion Remastered.
Right... So I decided to go from Ubuntu LTS to Ubuntu 25.04, because the cutting edge MESA drivers needs a newer kernel, and the newer kernel is supposedly more Intel card friendly, which might fix my BVH calculation issues with Blender as well.
UE5 games run now, except for Oblivion Remastered, which still has graphical artefacting. But Intel didn't have render kernels for Ubuntu 25.04 yet, so I couldn't render with cycles at all until they updated their repo.
They eventually updated their repo a week or two ago. But the render kernels don't load at all in Blender 3D, telling me "Oh this is meant for OneAPI compatible cards", yes, what the fuck do you think an Intel Arc A770 is!?!
So... Uh... Yeah, if there is a distro put there without all of this, that would be very great.

I played it on my Steam Deck, 30 FPS average with lots of audio crackling, apparently because of the CPU load. I played the game in hard mode because I was afraid survivor and grounded would break the balance.
The gameplay is great: it was insanely fun outsmarting the infected, circling around the clickers, burning the bloaters. Against those enemies, stealth really was a challenge and I had to manage my stress level (stalkers and runners were especially hard to deal with in the sewer); I'm convinced I would not be able to finish this game in permanent death as certain sequences took me 5-7 tries to do correctly (optimizing to use the least amount of gear or straight up surviving). It was really hard to aim well enough on a controller to be able to do headshot with consistency (this game with a controller and a mouse must feel like heaven to master).
Stealth against humans is way too easy though: you can easily never use your weapons and just throw a glass bottle against the wall, cleanup with a bomb or a Molotov, and you will never be punished when doing a stealthy kill if you take too long which basically means that shiv are useless for anything other than doors (I did not buy the ability to get off the grasp of clickers with shivs).
The hostage mechanic felt so cool, but I rarely used it because I felt like I couldn't afford to waste bullets because of the resource scarcity. I would have loved the game to be more punishing and to force me to spend my gear; I was never spotted and I am horrible at stealth (hello Cyberpunk 2077).
On the writing side, the game shines even more. I was so heartbroken when Sarah was murdered, when Tess sacrificed herself, when Sam turned and Henry killed himself, when Joel said horrible things to Ellie, when he murdered all the fireflies, the surgeon, Marlene in cold blood.
And that's where the game shines! It shows you this great dynamics between Joel and Ellie, this growing bond that is so precious. You despise and love Joel: you despise his lack of moral, his emotional immaturity (not wanting to talk about the hard stuff and lying to Ellie) but you understand where it comes from, you understand why the violence happened.
This constant tension, this gray area makes the game so real and gripping; you can only look with a mix of disgust and support as you're ripping your way through the enemies in the hospital with savagery.
What Joel did is unequivocally wrong and selfish but I cannot judge because I know full well I'd probably have done the same thing in this situation. Well, I'm not sure but I can see it.
This game really made me understand the complexity of moral and decision, the conflicting goals and the harshness of survival. I highly look forward to playing the sequel.
EDIT; I think the right difficulty for me is the "Survivor" one, grounded looks to hard without a mouse.
I played the first one as kind of a fluke. It's absolutely not my typical interest. I usually hate games with punishing resource limits, but some quirk of fate lined things up where I was in the right kind of mood for that one. Absolutely loved it.
Haven't (and never plan to) played the sequel. Just don't think I'll ever be able to top how magical the first one was for me and I was pretty happy with the original ending.

And most of them are also opposed to nukes.

@Viking_Hippie No I'm not conflating anything, what we have NOW determines how long the grid can tolerate under production and that is about five minutes. But wind might not blow for days, the sun is on average not in the sky 12 hours out of the day and the majority of those hours it is at an angle that makes less than peak production possible. But even if we used every gram of lithium we have we couldn't produce enough storage. There are some alternatives, vanadium flow batteries, but again vanadium is expensive and in short supply, or sodium ion batteries, here we've probably got adequate materials, but sodium has a two step discharge curve that make the electronics more expensive. In short we don't PRESENTLY have enough storage and it is doubtful that we will ever have enough to last overnight.

@Quadhammer So far that hasn't proven to be the case. Any nation that has wide spread application of renewable energy also has very high rates. Take Spain for example, approximately 50% of it's energy comes from renewables is 19.9cents / Kwh. Saudi Arabia by contrast, less than 1% of it's energy from renewables, 6.1cents / Kwh, less than one third the cost in Spain AND their grid doesn't collapse on a regular basis when clouds obscure a solar farm or the wind dies down.

I know this is going to be unpopular with some, but I am seriously considering a Mac and I am annoyed by the idea of it.
I NEED MacOS or Windows for my work. There is one application that does not work in Linux yet and there are no alternatives. It is a critical work application.
With that being said, you can probably guess that Linux is my preferred OS of choice.
I am currently using a Windows desktop for my work, but I do run into situations where I need a laptop. The laptop I am using now is a Thinkpad from 2021 with Fedora. I actually really love this computer. My only real complain is that the webcam is pretty garbage.
So, I think I need a new computer. My choices are Windows laptops which have decent pricing with good specs, or Apple which is extremely expensive for what you get.
I'm really annoyed with Windows' ads, bloat, and general lack of privacy; specifically Recall. On the other hand, it is hard to justify spending an extra $400 on a Macbook air just to get a 1tb hard drive. My work files alone take up a little more than 200gb.
I guess this is just a rant. I'm not looking for any solutions as what I am really looking is the ability to use Linux for my work which is not an option at the moment.
So, I hate Apple as much as the next nerd, but even I have to admit the new apple m.whatever chips are pretty slick. My wife is in design and has always fussed over apple, so I relented and got her an air for her last upgrade. Considering the price it's still an impressive, sturdy little machine with bonkers battery life.
macOS is, if nothing else, certified UNIX. Which means under the hood it's actually a lot like Linux.
Are you really overpaying for the hardware? Apple makes the hardware and the OS and every other OS subsidizes the cost of their OS with ads (Windows and Android). At the very least, it feels like you're paying a higher price for the hardware by having a small amount of more respect for your privacy in respect to invasive advertising.
The new Apple developed silicon (M1-M4) is actually really solid stuff, and as such, are you really overpaying when it comes to quality hardware and a quality OS?

You could choose to get a MacBook Pro, which starts at a higher storage tier. It’s still going to be more expensive than the air with the same size SSD, but you’ll get an inch larger screen and it is a seriously good screen.
If found after years of owning Linux and Mac laptops that I get years longer out of the Mac laptop, all things considered. They may be more up front, but dollars per year they come out ahead.
MacOS is UNIX certified, so you should feel right at home in terminal.
Finally, take advantage of their education pricing. At least in the US, they don’t check for eligibility. So your $1399 1TB MacBook Air is now 1279. Feel a little bit better about that price?
Bonus. The trackpad is head and shoulders above anything I’ve ever used. For me, that’s worth the price of admission alone.
It's been a while since the last time this was asked, so here goes again: what specific apps do you use Waydroid to run?
Whenever I get the itch to play around with this impressive project, I quickly remember that I can't think of anything to actually do with it. There's already a Linux native app for almost everything that isn't an ad infested game, so I'm curious if anyone has use cases for Waydroid that they can share. I'd love to hear about something cool that I didn't think of!
I tried Waydroid on Arch and its amazing. It runs Android apps flawlessly. And with a touchscreen device, I feel like I have an Android tablet running inside my Linux machine.
But I still don't know what to use it for...
What apps do you use with Waydroid? What use cases do you have for it?
So far, the only thing I know for sure that I would consider using it for is to use JoiPlay to play RPG Maker games that I can't get working with my normal methods but at least on my current computer/distro, I'm having issues with audio crackling.
I might find other apps to use later but for the most part, I just kind of keep android apps to android.
Not using it but I'd probably use it for a Lemmy app tbh. The average Lemmy app seems to have way more useful features than the vanilla desktop experience. Other than that, probably just games, although it's not like the same selection on Android is exactly stellar.
For me Lemmy was my gateway to the rest of the Fediverse. I can say I like Lemmy way more than I ever did Reddit. The people are nicer the engagement feels more real and over all it’s a better vibe. Here’s to 2 more everyone!
The developer of my favorite reddit app (dBrady, Relay for Reddit) decided to play along with Spez's game and start charging for usage.
So I fucked off, and after testing every Lemmy app I could find, I settled on Voyager. It's not optimized for foldables like Relay—and it's swipe gestures aren't as intuitive—but it's close and still better than paying to use reddit.
One instance? There's at least two. But does that really matter? Reddit had r/TheDonald and r/conservative, and trying to get those people to fuck off and stop proselytizing elsewhere was like trying to play whack-a-mole against an anthill.

Introducing oniux: Kernel-level Tor isolation for any Linux app. This torsocks alternative uses namespaces to isolate Linux applications over the Tor network and eliminate data leaks.
I think that the Tor network is proven to be broken by feds if you are suspicious.
For example you're one of the biggest drug dealer and you're doing 100 000 of deaths every say, for sure they will cramp up to you and find you, succeeding to deanonymize you.
But most of the time you are not that attractive so you will be mostly anonymous. They can target an entity to reveal it but cannot deanonynize the entire network
I have been flopping back and forth between arch and windows the last few years depending on the weather as I like to game in the garage when it's really nice out. I have been using an app called Apollo. Which is a fork of Sunshine with SudoVDA implemented. SudoVDA is perfect for my use cases. It allows you to spin up a virtual screen of whatever hz/size you'd prefer even HDR. This allows me to remotely game while leaving my gaming PC effectively running "headless" until the virtual screen is closed(you close the connection) I haven't found a way to implement a similar thing on Linux. The main sticking point being the headless application of it. I had a solution at one point that "worked" but only for 1440p 120hz and I'd have had to download or create some monitor profile file thing to change it and it was over my head and did not work well for my usecase as I also like to remote into my PC while working to game on breaks or lulls in tickets which is 1920x60 so then I had to spin up another virtual screen and things got broke and I gave up and eent back to using Apollo on windows as it's just so damn easy to use lol. I'm not dedicated to using sunshine/moonlight as my connection software id just like to find something as seemless as Apollo/moonlight or Apollo/Artemis(Android) is. Anyone know of any solutions? I'm fine with distro swapping. I've used arch based, fedora based, and Debian based distros in the past.

Friend just hopped to Bazzite from Windows. I was hoping the atomocity would be a great boon - you kind of can't beeak it right.
Well, he wanted to configure RGB lighting on his mouse but the flatpak openrgb did not work, supposedly the udev rules included in bazzite by default, are not up to date or there was some other problem. As such we had to install openrgb the usual system-wide way, with rpm-ostree in terminal - something I was hoping he would never had to do.
I honestly don't think an immutable distro is a great way to introduce people to Linux. It's not simple to do some things that are easy in anything else. It's going to drive a lot of new users away. The things that make it unbreakable also make it difficult for noobs.
NGL, I've been using Fedora Silverblue as my beginner distro, and while most of it has been great and plug-n-play with little issue, there's really frustrating shit about it. If I'm trying to look up how to do terminal stuff to install something not on flatpak, 99% of the time the instructions are for regular Fedora, not Silverblue. So I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to use Cisco packet tracer without using a wine app, because a version provided wasn't atomic.
Just yesterday, I wanted to try getting ShareX to work, and was trying to figure out a more native way to do ShareX + wine from the CLI, so I tried to install wine, but it uses its own repo, so I had to look up how to install a repo for Silverblue, in which there were far less results, and the few answers I saw were like "put the repofile in the folder for repositories." I'm so lost man. Idk where these shits are in my files. I tried reading what I think is the Silverblue documentation, but it doesn't explain much.
Sometimes I seriously think of switching to reg Fedora because my life would be far easier when having to find answers, and as long as I make backups, fucking my system up won't really matter much.

This is solved by the various ublue images and distrobox generally. Distrobox basically lets you run those install instructions as natively as possible. Its a bit like WINE but for all linux distros. For example, I can install a .deb file to my system with distrobox, or I could pull from Arch's AUR. Distrobox lets you be pretty lazy, it works most of the time, though some applications don't seem to like it. And by the way, you can download a .rpm file and layer it using rpm-ostree install [.rpm filelocation] if all else fails.
Generally, I feel like Fedora Atomic is the best middleground for linux these days. It really incentivizes the users to use containers, which are far more secure than the permissions anarchy of normal linux. Its easy enough to daily drive too.

When I looked up Linux alternatives, I never saw anyone mention this app. Also, it uses KDE, and Silverblue is Gnome. I just tried installing KWin since spectacle says it needs it, and it seems to not want to work...
Edit: Rebased to Fedora Kinoite because it uses Plasma KDE, which works with Spectacle. Shortcuts provided are nice and can do what I need, but ShareX definitely had more ways to create new shortcuts, and each shortcut could auto save to different folders, unlike the global save for ShareX. ShareX also can record JUST audio, which eliminates the need for a second app to do so. I just feel like the shortcuts and tasks in ShareX could be hyperspecific.

It was taken over buy something called "Muse group". They added telemetry, which is actually illegal in EU, unless you warn about it, and then it can only be used if you are over 18. I think that also makes it against to the GPL license. Then they pulled back, but later tried to do it partially or something I don't recall.
Clearly Muse Group was a bad fit for a GPL open source project.

I just installed Debian with the KDE desktop and I'm looking to see what kind of packages are available in the Discover store by default as they are not labeled i.e., Snaps/Flatpak. Should I install Flatpak? Thanks I don't to break anything
if you haven't added the flathub repository to your new debian kde desktop install, discover will only show you packages from debian's repositories that were automatically configured during installation.. even if you've added the flatpak 'backend' from inside discover--flathub still has to be added to your sources (see step 3 in link above).
once you have multiple sources of an application (for instance, 'vlc'), discover will add a 'sources' pulldown (top right, next to the 'install' button) where you can choose debian system package or flatpak (or snap, if configured).
which source you use is entirely up to you. on my own debian desktop, i usually stick with debs if it has what i'm looking for, as i've chosen debian and have accepted their pace at which new software is added. if i wanted 'bleeding edge' i would have installed something else entirely on it. but you can certainly go 'all flatpak' if you wanted to.

Yeah true, but if you're choosing Debian then I can see why there is caution about "unverified" flatpaks.
Ultimately if they're not verified then you're taking it on trust that they've been repackaged by a good actor and not a bad actor. We have no reason to believe there are malicious flatpaks are on flathub and verified only really meansnit was packaged by the originating project itself. But it is still a separate chain of packaging and security from the official one in a distro.
And Flathub doesnt need to be the repo used. Fedora for example created its own repo so it could verify its own flatpaks in the same way as its other system repos. Other distros do not seem to be following that path.
Personally I take the risk on flatpaks in the same way I will take risks on the opensuse OBS (or AUR in arch) - if i need/want the software and it's not in the main repos for my distro I will generally take it off flathub rather than add an OBS source I dont know well. (If its small software I might build from source myself).

No, it's not. It's a word predictor trained on most of the web. On its own it's a pretty bad search engine because it can't reliably produce the training data (that would be overfitting). What it's kind of good at is predicting what the output would be if someone asked a somewhat novel question. But then it's not that good at producing the actual answer to that question, only imitating what the answer would look like.

I'm using a nvidia gpu on Linux and I hate nvidia for removing some featuers but they do this only on budget or weak mobile gpus on Linux. Like they removed the ability to set a custom temp for gpu but this applies only on weak or budget gpus, if you have a flagship gpu you get all the features.

Hey hey, I have been using Sound Juicer on my Ubuntu 24 / KDE 5 PC and it works, but it doesn't handle the tags for my MP3 files very nicely. I've also used abcde, at the terminal, and that can be better but it takes a lot finessing at the CLI to get the result I want.
Is there a better CD ripper application that will run on Ubuntu and can make setting the MP3 tags dead simple?

I use whipper. It's a command-line application but it's easy to use and works great every single time. At first you should let it analyze your drive which is the only step more involved. Here's a mini tutorial for that I wrote for myself but you can also read it on the project page where it's probably more up to date:
Analyze the drive's caching behavior: $ sudo whipper drive analyze
Find the drive's offset. Consult the [[AccurateRip's CD Drive Offset database|http://www.accuraterip.com/driveoffsets.htm]] for your drive. Drive information can be retrieved with $ whipper drive list. $ sudo whipper offset find -o insert-numeric-value-here. If you omit the -o argument, whipper will try a long, popularity-sorted list of drive offsets. If you can't confirm your drive offset value but wish to set a default regardless, set read_offset = insert-numeric-value-here in whipper.conf. Offsets confirmed with $ whipper offset find are automatically written to the configuration file. If specifying the offset manually, please note that: if positive it must be written as a number without sign (ex: +102 -> 102), if negative it must include the sign.
After that you just rip any disc by running: $ whipper cd rip
And just as an example, here's my ~/.config/whipper/whipper.conf:

It can do the tagging for you, but it's important to note that music CDs do not contain metadata.
All the rippers that exist, look up what the CD is online, based on stuff like number of tracks, their lengths, and order. iTunes was the ripping software everyone used back in the day, because Apple made and maintained the first extensive database that could be used to automatically tag ripped music.
Modern rippers typically rely on MusicBrainz (like Picard).
As such there is no 100% reliable auto-tagging ripper, because a disc might match more than one album, or not be in the database. Such cases will always require manual intervention.

Being limited isn't that big a deal. My instance has them limited because of their lax moderation and an excess of reply guys. All it means is that I get a notification saying "Someone you might know sent you a notification" and I get to review and accept or deny the notification depending. Plus they have to request permission to follow me so I get to check them out before accepting.
I still have tons of mutuals on .social and I get new ones all the time. While each person making the choice about whether to accept notifications or follows from a particular user is going to make their own choices, I don't think it's particularly inconvenient.

IMHO, it’s one thing if you want to limit everything from there on your instance and on your own will, but a completely different thing for them to basically secretly ban you from their whole instance just because one single person on there felt offended and reported you. I wanted to ask if anyone has a preferred software for the purpose of creative writing.
Libre Office Writer is great of course, but just as software like LogSeq or Obsidian exist for the note taking process, I was wondering if there is anything that is specifically geared toward the creative writing process.
I know that there are federated blog platforms which focus on this in their presentation, but was curious about applications specifically.
I'm writing a novel in Obsidian and it works great. Currently closing on 70k words and it's just as fast as a file with 50 words in it. I also like that it's a simple markdown file which I can easily back up anywhere and open with anything.
That's interesting. What does the structure of that looks like? New notes per chapter and then back-linking them together, or everything in just one note?
I started with a single file that had bullet points for each story beat, then those grew into chapters. I then had files/notes for specific things that I needed to remember but didn't want in the novel itself (character backstories, etc). After a while I found the single file overwhelming so I split it into one file per chapter, that way it was easier to focus on one at a time; when I felt they were all in decent shape I put them back together in one file. I use headings for each chapter title so that I can jump to each one in the table of contents. I'm now doing a final pass for tone and for minor fixes; when something needs attention I highlight it so that I can find it later.
I tried a LOT of different apps but Obsidian was for me the best combination of being very responsive, not too distracting, easy to navigate, and not locking me into a proprietary format.
I also love iA writer but it doesn't work on Linux, or with Wine...
I've been enjoying novelWriter for a few months now.
It's FOSS, works on every OS, and is created by a writer who was frustrated with the other options available. She and another writer co-designed it initially, and there's a respectably sized community built up around it at this point. It's got the kinds of features that writers actually need, and avoids bloat. So they say, and in my experience that's certainly been the case.
If you "only" need beautiful PDF and it doesn't have to be online, you can also use Typst with vscode and tinymist as editor locally. Not as powerful as TeX, but I know few people for use TeX even remotely to its fullest. The upside of Typst is, that the "core" syntax for content writing is very markdown-like, so you can focus on writing instead of the underlying language.
Holy shit, thank you! I had no idea overleaf was open source; you have cleared my conscience. Typst seems interesting, but I am a bit of a typesetting nerd and quite used to latex anyway. Transition now would be difficult. I'll check it out though, it might be nice for drafts and such. Thanks again!

when I say trim I don't mean to time trim a file, like getting rid of the last 2 minutes of the mkv file, but to picture trim every frame of the mkv file to get rid of black margins to both left and right of the actual image.
Files were originally recorded on 4:3 aspect ratio (some are movies from the 1950's) but the encoder somehow created / copied huge black margins to both left and right of the actual image. I want to get rid of these.
Some of my files are 30 minutes long but others 2 hours.

Introduction
Setting up a secure coding environment for the Rust programming language on secureblue isn't hard to do, but it's difficult to figure out on your own. That is why I am making a guide explaining how to do it yourself.
For this tutorial, I will be using the silverblue-main-hardened:latestimage of secureblue. For this tutorial, I am also assuming you have enabled Flatpak permission lockdown by running ujust flatpak-permissions-lockdown.
Install a code editor
You can install whichever code editor you want, but for this tutorial I will be using VSCodium which is an open source binary of Microsoft's Visual Studio Code without telemetry.
Command-line instructions
Open the terminal.
VScodium can be installed using the following command:
You will be prompted to proceed with changes to the user installation. After reviewing the changes, you can press enter. VSCodium will be downloaded and installed for the current user.
Type VSCodium. This should begin typing in a search bar, and VSCodium should show up as a search result.
Select VSCodium (the blue one). VSCodium - Insiders (the orange one) is the nightly release of VSCodium, and is not recommended for daily use.
Click the blue Install button on the top right. VSCodium will be downloaded and installed for the current user.
You may close GNOME Software now.
Install the Rust SDK
Rust provides multiple ways of installing. On secureblue, things are more locked down, especially with VSCodium being installed as a Flatpak. Rather than layering Rust as a system package and giving VSCodium invasive permissions to make it work, there is a much more elegant way to install Rust that isn't mentioned in their install instructions.
Flathub provides an SDK Extension for Rust that can be used for Flatpak code editors, such as VSCodium. This can only be installed from the command line. Trying to install it from GNOME Software will install an outdated version of the Rust SDK.
Open the terminal.
First, we need to find the branch of org.freedesktop.Sdk. This will allow us to install the correct version of the Rust SDK.
The branch of org.freedesktop.Sdk can be found using the following command:
flatpak info org.freedesktop.Sdk
Make a note of the version number next to the Branch: section. In my case, it is 24.08.
The Rust SDK can be installed using the following command:
You will be prompted to select which ref you would like to install. Find the version that matches the branch of org.freedesktop.Sdk. Type the number corresponding with the version (in my case, 5), and press enter.
You will be prompted to proceed with changes to the user installation. After reviewing the changes, you can press enter. The Rust SDK will be downloaded and installed for the current user.
You may close the terminal now.
Grant Flatpak permissions
Assuming you enabled Flatpak permission lockdown, VSCodium won't have permission to access everything it needs to work properly. We need to grant these permissions manually.
We will need to create a directory to act as your project directory. VSCodium will have access to every file in this directory, so it is best to only use it for VSCodium. I am deciding to create a folder in my home directory named VSCodium to store all of my VSCodium projects.
VSCodium will need the following permissions to work: - The Network permission, in order to efficiently install extensions and update them automatically. - Access to a dedicated project directory, in order to create workspaces. - Permission to access the Rust SDK, in order to support the Rust language. - Optional access to Development syscalls, in order to use debugging extensions.
Command-line instructions
Open the terminal.
VScodium can be granted the Network permission using the following command:
Open Flatseal. This should be installed by default, but if you decided not to install it during the post-install of secureblue, it can be installed from GNOME Software.
Type VSCodium. This should begin typing in a search bar on the left, and VSCodium should show up as a search result.

You will be prompted for your administrator passphrase. After reviewing the prompt, enter your passphrase and click Authenticate. This will enable anti-cheat support.

This guide is actually only 3 steps: 1. Install VSCodium 2. Install the Rust SDK 3. Enable permissions
The rest is just extras, like installing rust-analyzer, which you would need to do on any distribution. The reason it's so long is because I wanted to make it painstakingly simple for anyone to be able to do it, regardless of using the command-line, user-interface, mouse, or keyboard. Depending on how hardened you've made your secureblue system, you really could just install everything with one command:
As I mentioned, using rustup requires granting VSCodium more invasive permissions to get it to work. Furthermore, installing it would require layering system packages, which should be done sparingly. Using the Rust SDK is the recommended approach by VSCodium while using their Flatpak, and it is actually the simpler option.
I said this because even if the Rust version (not edition) is one singular release old, you miss out on features. I tried Rustc and Cargo through Nixpkgs and I reverted back to Rustup just because I wanted to use std::io::pipe().
New to this, starting to understand how it works sort of. I am looking for a place to chat to people, are live text chat room communities a thing here? Or do people chat through comments on posts? Not quite understanding that aspect yet.
E: I AM NOT USING FEDORA. Please stop linking to guides for Fedora. They will not work. uBlue/Bazzite does not use dnf.
I got a free iMac. Installed Linux on an external drive. Bazzite, specifically. WiFi does not work. My research leads me to a problem with proprietary Broadcom drivers but no solutions. If you know how to get this working, your advice would be appreciated.
Also if there's another distro that works "out of the box" on Macs with GNOME I'd be open to installing that as well.
I have WiFi problems on most distros with my 2012 Retina MBP. Generally I can’t get it working.
The only two distros I can get it working on are EndeavourOS and Linux Mint.
Mint requires installing the proprietary drivers after installation, which it easy to do.
EndeavourOS is actually easier works “out of the box” for me. But I need to change it to use WPA2 instead of WPA3 for it to work on my Mac, being as old as it is.
If you open Driver Manager after installation it will say you need to either connect to Ethernet or insert the installation USB. Using the Installation USB is fine.
It should then automatically detect you have a Broadcom WiFi module and just give you a checkbox you can click next to the correct driver.
It will install the driver from the USB, say you need to restart and then you should be done! Upon rebooting your Mac should immediately recognise available WiFi networks and let you join them.
Unfortunately the audio outputs are not detected, the cursor blinks and disappears constantly, Steam wouldn't launch, and my camera is activated constantly for some reason...
This is probably not the best system for bazzite. Stick with something with a longer track record like Debian/ubuntu or better documentation like arch.
Those old macs can get really pissy with Linux sometimes but it can be done. Their WiFi chips are incredibly obnoxious to deal with. Worst case scenario you can swap wifi cards in some those or even simply use a USB WiFi card instead.
Google used to use Ubuntu on MacBooks though I’m not sure if that’s still the case. It has a reputation of being straightforward and well supported but not everyone likes what canonical is doing anymore.
Fedora is weirdly more complex and its documentation isn’t as great as it looks on the surface. It’s worth a try but honestly documentation is more important than out of box support at this point.
Arch needs a lot of handholding and it’s a bit of a handful but the wiki is amazing and frankly the best part of that particular distro. Unlike Ubuntu you would get a virgin GNOME experience more similar to fedora but it’s also easier to break things in arch than elsewhere so keep that in mind before you head down this road. Arch is an excellent education but not always a best place to live in.
Start with Ubuntu if you want to see how that hardware is supported. If it is a pain in the ass in Ubuntu, it’s likely to be a pain in the ass elsewhere too. Consider using a usb wifi nubbin and just moving in with that.
Well the Wifi on Mint worked out of the box but the cursor would flash in and out, the audio didn't work, Steam wouldn't launch and my webcam was constantly lit up for some reason.
Unfortunately I dont have specific instructions on how to tame an angry fedora. It’s not my main so I dont have that memorized, but I do know Ubuntu likes to include some quality of life tweaks out of box that other distros like fedora can omit, including power management settings that can help tame stubborn wireless cards like these.
wireless cards have their own power management settings that typically arent shown in the GUI and in linux the defaults for some of them are so aggressive they cause problems. Intels are notorious for this but some older broadcom cards had this problem too.
Recently install Fedora 42 KDE on one of those weird laptops with a pen - everything just works, no tinkering. Looking at your specs - I have almost the same config, except in place of SATA SSD I installed a NVMe SSD, if course the laptop needs to support that. KDE Plasma is superior in the touch support, although the screen keyboard is a little buggy at times. But the situation in the GNOME ecosystem is a bit worse for touch/pen devices. Good luck
Hi all, Sony loves these data collection messages at the beginning of their games. They don’t even give you the option to opt-out. It is mandatory and is either “Full data” or “limited”. I don’t want to give them either. Is there a straight forward way to do this? Thanks in advance.
Anything attempting to leave the LAN on port 53 or 853 gets redirected to my pihole and logged. It's mostly google stuff, but TV's do it too. A determined enshittifier could implement DoH or DoT.
That was actually a part of the main question, but then I decided not to include it. Opensnitch shows so many popups that I get confused which is to allow and which to deny. Sometimes things could break and a reboot is necessary.
The three dots are what? The path to the .exe file? I tried that and it broke the game. It was complaining about some dx12 something. Also, I tried the firetool app, but it doesn't have anywhere that shows the blocked apps/files. You just have to trust it.

are you using Heroic lsuncher from flatpak? if yes you need to somehow add firejail to Heroic app, or just restrict acess to internet for whole Heroic launcher flatpak --user override --unshare=network com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl
if not you need to add firejail wrapper with --noprofile --net=none args without any quotes (it says "Make sure to quote args with spaces", which is not your case)

I had backblaze, and it's really a bummer they don't support linux. The closest one I've found is Icedrive, but it costs a bit more. I don't mind paying a bit more though for a FOSS solution (technially not free but yeah). I probably only have 2 TB of actual important stuff but it would be nice to have more for future.
Things like don’t shake a baby (babies love to be bounced and rocked, which are honestly just gentle shaking, but even moderately vigorous shaking can seriously injure or kill an infant and you should never shake a baby in anger or anything like that) or don’t take anything with you when exiting a building when a fire alarm goes off (don’t go looking for things, but you should still put your coat on if it’s next to you and it’s cold out). What other common maxims are generally good to follow, but over exaggerated? Bonus points if it’s only a well known saying because our instinct is to do the thing, like with rocking babies.

Yes, it's true the children shouldn't be engaging in sex acts, and the details of adult sexual behavior should be kept from them, since they're not equipped to understand, e.g. BDSM and power play, yet. But if kids see a pair of boobs, if kids see naked people, or even if kids know the basic functions of body parts, they'll be fine. Lots of kids throughout human history lived in small dwellings and heard, or even saw, parents and other members of their community having sex, and they all survived the experience.

Hi, I've been thinking about switching from Win11 to Linux Mint due to Microsoft collecting lots of data. My current setup has been cobbled together over the past decade and consists of a C drive NvME, 1 old SATA SSD, and 2 HDDs. I have games installed across all of the non-C drives, some from steam some not.
Windows tells me each drive by letter. I installed Mint on a virtual machine to get a look, but it couldn't read any of my files. I don't want to wipe my C drive without knowing that at least the other drives will be readable if I make the switch.
How does Linux account multiple hard drives? I'm so used to how Windows does it that I'm worried about switching over and losing access to my other drives. Thanks!
Linux doesn't do the drive letter thing. Instead, you have to identify the disks by their partition IDs.
When you install your OS, you'll be able to mount the disks to wherever you like. If you want, you can create directories in /mnt, like /mnt/e, /mnt/f etc.
The main issue you'll run into is disk format. NTFS will work, but its poorly supported.
To get a better idea of how it works, try passing a USB disk into the VM you've created.

I want to have a mirror of my local music collection on my server, and a script that periodically updates the server to, well, mirror my local collection.
But crucially, I want to convert all lossless files to lossy, preferably before uploading them.
That's the one reason why I can't just use git - or so I believe.
I also want locally deleted files to be deleted on the server.
Sometimes I even move files around (I believe in directory structure) and again, git deals with this perfectly. If it weren't for the lossless-to-lossy caveat.
It would be perfect if my script could recognize that just like git does, instead of deleting and reuploading the same file to a different location.
My head is spinning round and round and before I continue messing around with find and scp it's time to ask the community.
I am writing in bash but if some python module could help with it I'm sure I could find my way around it.

Not all files in the local collection are lossless. A variety of formats.
The purpose of the remote is for listening/streaming with various applications
The lossy version is for both reducing upload and download (streaming) bandwidth. On mobile broadband FLAC tends to buffer a lot.

for each file, determine what the correct remote name (including a valid extension) would be, and add the pair to the dict, with remote filenames as keys, local filenames as values

And thanks for the coding tips. It seems git is not the best option here because it keeps a full history of all files in their fullness - a gigantic waste of space in the case of a media collection.
I am now thinking more rsync minus lossless formats, then deal with lossless formats separately.
you know, you could also either include a lossy copy next to the lossless ones, then rsync only lossy extensions, or, if that pollutes your collection, have a separate but identically-structured directory tree, where all your lossless files have lossy copies. Then, you can rsync both folders (send-only) to your single remote (lossy extensions only).

For me, it was perhaps simple-scan, a very simple and efficient GUI to scan documents. I used it with my Brother printer / scanner and it works like a charm. Especially since I do not scan stuff often, so a program with more complex UI would have the effect that I forget how to use it until the next time.
Out of curiosity, what is it you use it for? I pretty much only use it for SMS, for which it is kinda janky and unstable. Doesn't always get contact names, doesn't load everything from conversations, misses messages that I sent or that were sent to me, crashes if I scroll too fast, etc. I have Connect installed just to use SMS (cause I hate typing on my phone keyboard), but I'm honestly not even sure what the base software does.
I really like LocalSend as well, but it’s very inconsistent with me. I think it has to do with one device being on a VPN, but I’m not totally sure. Basically I have some “one way” connections where one device can see and send to the one connected to a VPN but not the other way around. Is there some way I can specify LocalSend connections to ignore the VPN? I’m on NixOS and installed LocalSend in my user package declarations in my Nix config.
I had the same thing on Bazzite just with the local network, not a VPN.
I believe it has to do with the firewall. You have to open the port both incoming and outgoing for 53317.
But you literally have to be on the same network, so for example if both devices are on the same local network (hence local in the name) and your phone is on a VPN but your computer is not on a VPN, then it won't work.
It should work if you wireguard into your local network remotely so that both devices are on the same LAN, however, then that won't work anyway because you have to have physical access to the device to accept the transfer (you could probably use a remote desktop to do that, but then it is getting complicated)
Microsoft Edge was a recent surprise. It's surprising both that Microsoft would create it and that any Linux users would run it. Since its Chromium based, there should be no need for developers to test Edge separately.
I opened Edge on a fresh install a couple days ago. The amount of things flashing and spinning and popping up trying to grab my attention actually gave me nausea.
And I don't mean (just) ads, I mean even the starting page with all the news, weather, random popups telling me things i can do with Edge, the dark patterns as soon as I searched for Firefox in Bing, and so on.
The thought that there's even a single human in the process of developing and maintaining that browser is incredible to me.
But well, I suppose some people do enjoy it. Just beware it won't be as fast on Linux as it is in Windows since it isn't as thoroughly integrated into the OS.
I convinced my work to let me use linux on their laptop. They sent me instructions for setup. One of them was to install Microsoft Defender, had a link to the Ubuntu package and everything. Blew my mind.
I don't know, but my guess is it might still be able to detect some cross-platform malware signs and detect malware intended for Windows on Linux machines (e.g. I can download a PDF that is harmless on my machine, but if I reupload and a Windows user downloads it, I've spread malware regardless). IIRC ClamAV is sometimes used to check files on an email server, often looking for Windows exploits being sent through the server.
So gaming on Linux is obviously amazing now, but back in 2006 or so when I started using it, it was less than great. I probably tried every single game in the Ubuntu repos and Neverball entertained the hell out of me.
I spent hours rolling this shiny ball around. I loved Marble Madness on NES as a kid, so it was a natural fit.
A close second was Freeciv, as I had also grown up with a copy of Civilization.
Honestly the hardest part of doing this seems to be settling on what we're going to call it. Then someone thinks "let's actually make more relevant ads appear. This video is about videogames, let's show a videogame ad." Then: "We can see what videos this user likes, so we can get an idea that they like videogames, so let's show them videogame ads, even on other videos". And it eventually morphed into "We can see this user visited this videogame shop 1 month ago thanks to our other maps service. Let's show them adverts for that shop's sale". It's just crazy.

We've had discussions about this, with and without our kids. Yeah, they need to be in the loop with their friends, and being in that loop can mean being exposed to some bullshit.
That's always been the case, though. The additional risk of modern social media, I think, is that it's always with you. One of the rules we laid down was to plug your phone in outside your room before you go to bed. That was relatively strongly enforced when they were younger, just getting started in that arena. They're all essentially adults now, so we don't enforce it anymore, but they sometimes still do it anyway.
It's important to be connected, and it's okay to be disconnected when you want to be.

Sorry, just some small note. Charging to 100% daily significantly shortens the battery lifespan. Staying between 20 - 80% is generally recommended. But to be honest, if I still had a phone with user replaceable battery I'd just 100% it too. I mean, the battery for my Galaxy Ace is like €6.
Anyway, I've got some USB tester from AliExpress that also has a time limit. I can usually nail that near 80%. There's also some physical Bluetooth charge limiters, though that of course requires their app.

It's pretty clear that OP's daughter does feel like she's missing out on things her friends are doing, that's why she is asking. Social isolation doesn't have to be total to be damaging to your mental health, especially if you're an extrovert.
And bringing up "but in my time..." Yeah, no. Not a comparable situation. If everyone is on social media and you're not, you're going to be left out of at least some things, there's just no way around it.
I'm not a parent (and I'm glad I don't have to think about this problem myself). However, I've worked at a company that specialised in filtering internet services with many parents using it to protect their kids. I've also talked to plenty of people whose parents used to deny them whatever app the kids were on at the time. I can tell you that many kids will install apps and create accounts eventually, whether you permit them or not. I've seen the ingenious workarounds kids will come up with (using the browser app built into Windows Help to get around parental controls, combining web proxies and VPNs into an unholy homebrew Tor, or just using a burner phone outside the house), and while I appreciate the hacker culture that can develop around hiding apps from your parents, I don't think it'll be good for the relationship between you and your kids if you're too strict about this stuff.
Snapchat is popular because other kids are on there. It's mostly a stupid looking chat app. Every other chat app out there has cloned its most important features. Your kids won't be missing out on anything on there, except for the network of friends and social activities that are there. That means you won't find a Fediverse app like that, because most teenagers aren't on the Fediverse. The other kids aren't going to replace Snapchat with an app just to chat with your kids, especially not if it sends a copy of their conversations to their parents. Best case scenario, they install the app and share most of the stuff your kids are missing out on on the special server you set up so your kids don't miss too much.
As for the point your daughter made, notifications can be silenced. If your kids are worried about phone addiction or getting interrupted by notifications, help them with whatever digital wellness tools their devices come with. Every major OS, desktop and mobile, now comes with tools to limit notifications during focus time, bed time, and the ability to silence notifications for certain chats or events. I find it hard to believe that Snapchat would solve that problem and feel like it's more likely she's using an unrelated valid concern to help her case for your permission to use Snapchat.
I don't know how old your daughters are and what guidance they need, but if they're creating PowerPoints to get their desires across (bravo), I think they'd be better served with guidance than with alternatives. Instead of rejecting them, consider permitting apps like Snapchat under certain conditions (time limits, no publicly posting pictures, no strangers, etc.). It's probably also best to make the rules are clear and consistent (which means not taking away Snapchat time as punishment for arbitrary things), because that kind of stuff can cause trust issues that will still have them go behind your back. For this to work, they need to trust that you will honour the "deal". I'm not saying you should let 12 year olds go ham on social media, but letting 16 year olds on Snapchat an hour a day isn't going to kill them.
The biggest risk with these things is that kids will find a way to install these apps without you noticing, something bad happens (their online friend turns out to be a grown man, a classmate starts sending weird messages), and they're afraid of talking to you about it because they might get in trouble for having a banned app on their phone.
The minimum age for Snapchat is 13. The direct mesaaging part of it allows for fun and harmless messages between friends. I think allowing her to use it if she's 13+ is reasonable.
What you could do is to ask her not to allow friend requests or messages from anyone who are not her friends, not to use the AI assistant (which can't be disabled), and to not use it to consume content from influencers (which is in a separate tab to the right). You cannot really police this, but it's not the end of the world if she sees the feed of some dumb influencer.
Position data must of course also be disabled. Snapchat is a bit creepy.
The fediverse is always (somewhat) public. Getting together with other parents to set up a Pixelfed instance to use in the friend group rather than to have them use Instagram is a cool idea, and allows parents to be admins and decide who can federate without taking control of the accounts of the kids. It might be a nice way for them to learn that whatever they do online is run by some person whom they decide to trust. And it could keep them off Instagram a little longer.
I don't really know the first thing about parenting though, just my thoughts. It's a tricky question.

I just found out the text messages you get from Club Riot are for actual events in world and not just flavor text. I haven’t dug into it, but it almost sounded like they had multiple sets of music for the different artists. Just so many little details.
If CDPR hadn't forced the team to crunch to get the game running at all on PlayStation, it probably would have been much more polished on release. A lot of the bugs you see in YouTube glitch compilations were due to this over-optimization (like NPCs vanishing or changing models when you looked away for a second).
I wonder how much better the game and its reception would have been if they'd dropped the last-gen console support during development. Those were the truly awful versions; the PC version was about even with Bethesda's launch day jank.
I also wish they'd properly managed expectations. The PC release was buggy and missing promised features, yes, but a lot of the hate came from it being a game with an open-world city with guns and driving but not mimicking GTA's systems.

what? It's not like everyone needs to run jeyfin at home. the oy thing you need to use is the jeyfin webapp, which I don't understand how is it more complicated than netflix or any other similar service. you log in, pick a movie and hit play. that's it.
I don't mean to diminish your comment, but I just went through the setup process for both Plex and jellyfin (moving to new hardware) and there was no significant difference between the setups.
Maybe this wasn't the case a few years ago, but jellyfin is just a setup, point to libraries, and enable hardware accel.

I'm not lying, I can show you my Fw config. My son called me yesterday saying he couldn't watch Plex, something about the Plex pass. I just changed the Fw rule DST nat mangle port and told him to use jellyfin. The user is local, so that's dead easy. Done in 10 minutes.
And yes, most users don't have this kind of experience, granted. But Plex comes with its own stupidities, like in 2020 when my wife had to pay $5 for the Plex app so she could access our library. Or the exercise of sharing libraries if you don't have a Plex pass, which is a real pain.
But that wasn't my point. I was trying to relay that jellyfin isn't as buggy and difficult as a lot of self hosters claim.
My Jellyfin tunnels via traefik and cloudflared. However, the normal Android app somehow can't login, but streamyfin works like a charm. I always had issues with plex, because it relied on their own service. But jellyfin now simply works, pretty nifty
Jellyfin is basically as easy to use as plex within the same network. I’ve set up both dueing the past 6 months. The only big difference is that Jellyfin is much more of a pain to work through port forwarding.

So...I bought a Latitude 7350 detachable laptop, as a replacement for a Surface where the cams don't work on Linux. This laptop seemed rather powerful and compatible, while still keeping the weight constrained (something the Minisforum V3 isn't as successful in). Also, I prefer the rear being a stand thingy like on the Surface, and not some detachable flap you need to turn about 150 degrees to turn it into a mandatory stand (because when closed...it blocks the intake fans).
Anyway...Seems that while the camera module IPU6 is meant to be supported on Linux...I don't seem to be able to get any image. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I installed KDE Neon (I'd prefer a KDE-based distro) and installed intel-ipu6-dkms and intel-usbio-dkms. But the camera doesn't seem to work. Any ideas how could I troubleshoot this?

Might be that that failure is caused by not having the firmware file on your system? I have seen that happen before with a GPU. Probably not the case, but at least it's easy to check for.
It looks like a bunch of unhappy Windows users have also been having trouble with that particular laptop and camera, from a quick search, so I don't know how solid the driver work is for that particular camera:
Run a scan to share what does and doesn't work on your machine so that others can see. Don't worry about it. This is a good thing for everyone and not some exploit. Check if others have scanned with the same hardware. Look at what kernel they are running and if it has the same problem or notes. You may see the hardware label and find other machines with the same that may or may not be working.
The important part is the hardware id of the camera, you have to search for this, drivers and kernel modules use this number to check if they are needed: 8086:7d19

As I see the date of the patch is this year March, I guess simply the laptop is too new. If you don't want to fiddle, just switch to some rolling release distro, and the patches will be merged upstream soon. After a kernel update your camera will magically start working. This would be the easiest solution if you can live some more months without the camera.
I want to make the switch but I want to test run first before fully committing. My PC has an M.2 SSD. I was thinking I could buy another one, swap them out and put Linux on that. In an emergency, I can swap the SSD back. Does this seem like a viable/sensible path toward Linux? I don't really have too many files on my PC that I care about. I don't want to dual boot. I did that on a laptop back in the day and it was annoying.
Testing a normal Linux installation sounds like a good idea. In my opinion it's better to transition to Linux than switch. That way you can go back to your previous system setup and see what you are missing or need without having to open your computer and swap hardware. If you can add the old or new SSD as an external drive and so that you can can boot then your plan might work out.
OP specifically said they don't want to dual boot, and I honestly understand why they would say that.
When you dual boot you need to worry about what bootloader is in use and how it is set up. You might find yourself in a situation where you later decide to move fully to Linux and use the old Windows drive as storage but you can't because if you wipe it then everything stops working.
Windows has even been known to destroy dual boot setups occasionally during Windows updates.
All very solveable if you have the right knowledge, but if you want to keep your life simple then swapping hardware has guaranteed safety (nothing can go wrong with the contents if a drive if it's not plugged in, after all) and it's very predictable and understandable.
You just need to run the installation with one drive at a time if you want to be extra sure, then each will have its own boot partition and they can still work together, for example I have 3 drives, one Linux, one Windows and one storage, the Linux one has GRUB on it and it detects the bootloader on the Windows drive just fine so you can select either from that or the UEFI boot selector. Never had updates scramble anything for neither of the two systems
I'm not sure what all those words mean so I'm not gunna do that. I might learn these things later but I'm trying not to frontload a lot of the learning.
That's fair, I won't say that it's not as complicated as it sounds because I don't know what you know, but if you want it put into simple words, it's the following: 1. Install drive 1 in PC 2. Install Windows 3. Remove drive 1 from the PC and put drive 2 in its place 4. Install any Linux distro that comes with GRUB as bootloader (most of them, personally recommend Fedora if you want a suggestion) 5. Install drive 1 into the second slot that was left empty up to now 6. Start boot, your motherboard will have a specific key to launch the boot selector, e.g. F10, or go into the UEFI settings to put the Linux option first 7. Boot into Linux and trigger the GRUB detection for other OSes so it updates the list of entries 8. Reboot 9. Now without having to smash a random key to get the built-in boot selector, you will instead be able to choose comfortably from GRUB.
Anyways don't pressure yourself into doing any of that if you don't feel comfortable with it, of course. One step at a time, the important thing is you're satisfied with what you have and that it's functional to your workflow
That's the best, safest way. By the way, you can do the same thing from a flash drive too, if it has enough space to hold the system. I don't mean as a live temporary system, I mean you can just point the installer to a second flash drive as the install disk and it won't care.
But keep in mind slower read performance will make the system slower. The SSD will fly by comparison. Don't let a flash drive fool you into thinking Linux is slow.
I used a usb-c external SSD drive. Worked like a charm and I even could run starcitizen from that with no remarkable performance drop. Once I was settled with linux I just installed the external SSD internally.
I also would use Clonezilla and make a backup of your current drive. Easy to do, and gives you a backup you can restore anywhere including a virtual machine, meaning you can have windows back inside of Linux if you forgot anything.
Or you can restore the drive if you accidentally corrupt it.

@LandedGentry You can partition a thumb drive and install just as if it was a hard drive. I create thumb drives this way mainly for restoration of a system is something gets broken to where it can't boot, kernel corrupted, initramfs, etc.
Just posted the video, because I like that she's quite balanced in her views. The subject matter will always trigger a level of controversy, esp. on lemmy. But the advice is pretty solid.
And if Mint isn't the answer, go with Ubuntu. Or Zorin OS. Or PopOS. All of them are "right" and provide excellent beginner experiences for many people.
Is this a decent OS to move users off Win too that I won't have to do a lot of remote maintenance on? I have a few varied OS's installed on machines around and Cinnamon I have found to look/feel a lot like Windows 7 which would benefit the learning curve for family/friends looking or needing to find an OS to install on a machine that isn't newer.
Curious if anyone has used this, and if so if it is a good fit for those 60+ aged family members and such. They have all used Windows for work at least a decent amount, so keeping things similar is always good. A decent App Store would be nice though. I hated the default store in Pop_OS.
If I could say do updates and reboot every once in awhile and you should be fine it'd be great. Remoting in with RustDesk and hitting App Update/Upgrade being all that is needed also would be great, but you know how that goes. Someone will break something, and I just want something intuitive enough that they won't do it often.
If it's true that it uses only 250 MB of RAM as it claims, then it had advantages on old computers over Mint which uses 950 MB (htop). My mom's computer only has 2 GB of RAM for example (an old, converted-to-linux Chromebook), so we need a distro that really doesn't use much ram. Thankfully she only uses 1 tab at a time on the browser (she doesn't know how to open more), so that makes it just enough with something heavy like YT or FB, so she doesn't hit the swap and slow things down.
No, that thing is unusable. It has no niceties to help a user do basic things. The best OS I've found that has enough GUI tools to do stuff, is Q4OS. Uses 350 MB of RAM, but it has enough stuff to get you going. I looked more into FunOS btw, and it requires quite some terminal work to even get tap-to-click to work. It's missing some GUI tools for basic things. It doesn't even save screen resolution changes without editing X11 files. If they get these things implemented, then sure. Same goes for all the other lite OSes, like AntiX, DSL, etc. Lightweight, yes. But not really usable by an ordinary user. They are missing GUI tools, of if they have them (like in the case of antix and puppy), they are a complete and utter MESS. I've used all of them, and they have left me very, very underwhelmed. Until then, Q4OS is the best of the lightweight distros. It's well put together.
Ubuntu LTS base is not suited for desktop use. Being lightweight also just seems completely unnecessary as a 'Windows 10 replacement' OS. Just use Fedora or Arch.
Lightweight to me just means I can use it in any situation regardless of what shitty or wonderful device they happen to need it on. And it can match all devices they end up needing it on. Say a media player with stremio, or a laptop, desktop etc. I understand what you mean though. Arch from everything I have heard isn't for beginners so as someone who has used 5 or so different Linux distros, maybe more... Have avoided it because the stigma that people have put around it. Is Fedora Debian based? I am unsure I've used it. I suppose I am looking for something with LTS that can be used across a multitude of hardware so I can create a "standardized" image per say, and then just adjust to meet the needs of specific hardware while always allowing them to have basically the same interface so they dont have to learn how to navigate situations differently across devices.
A device that can't run a normal desktop environment/compositor/wm just isn't worth keeping, if it can't run plasma, it can't run a browser or anything useful either (and you can get a 10 year old laptop/office pc basically for free).
My laptop struggled with plasma, but works just fine now with xfce. Even plays 1080p YouTube videos. But plasma was too much for some reason. I suppose the limit here is my 4gb ram
If you check the little box in the settings the machine with totally opaque and secret software running on it that you don't control will definitely respect that little check box and stop spying on you
