My friends and I are hosting a Linux and FOSS group chat to have some casual chat, help, and anything related to the topic really. We chose this platform to chat on to keep a privacy preserving way to engage with one another.
I wouldn't get involved with someone deeply religious. I'd consider someone religious if they were sufficiently wishy-washy about it, though, e.g. people who are christian and believe in it at least enough to not call themselves atheists or agnostics but don't really DO anything christian.
That's potentially included in wishy-washy christianity. The important part is how they act on it. Though it certainly mystifies me how you can believe in that stuff and then act as if it doesn't, but that's kinda how people roll in my parts ...
I'm an atheist. I dated a woman once who believed in spirits. I think she experienced night terrors among other things and interpreted them as supernatural phenomena. It didn't cause problems then but I was a lot younger and I think now I'm less tolerant of that sort of thing. But who knows - I was crazy about her so maybe if I meet a woman I'm crazy about like that again then I'll tolerate anything.
More recently I've dated people who believe in a vague sort of life after death but never someone who practiced any religion. I think I would immediately rule out practicing religious people if I were going through a list (as when dating online) but if I met someone in person, really liked her, and then found out she was religious then I'm not sure what I would do. It would definitely be off-putting.
The problem for me isn't the lifestyle differences but rather my impression that religious people are missing the point about the basic nature of existence, when it really should be obvious. It makes me feel like I'm patronizing them, because to be frank I don't tend to think of them as my intellectual equals. (And I know that makes me sound like a pompous jerk.)
Yea I kinda get the same feeling. Although for a lot of people their religion does not preclude the acceptation/understanding of a physical world, it's a more of set of rites that they inherited and that's part of their identity. There's plenty of religious people who are scientists. For some, I imagine it may be difficult to reconcile.
I know that there are religious scientists and I think humans often compartmentalize beliefs in such a way that their belief about the supernatural doesn't affect their assessment of real-world situations. I'll even go further and say that often it seems like their belief affects their behavior much less than it logically ought to, with some (but not all) people who apparently sincerely believe in an all-seeing God and an afterlife still acting just like atheists in relevant situations. In this context, the fanatics are sometimes technically the more rational ones - I disagree with their premises, but their actions make sense if those premises are considered true.
I think people's behavior is determined much more by social conventions and the expectations of their community (in addition to pragmatic self-interest) than it is by logical reasoning. I'll risk being the preachy vegetarian by discussing people's attitudes towards eating meat. Most people sincerely believe that cruelty to animals is wrong, and also that factory farming (if not all killing) is cruel. Yet they eat meat. I even know some people who started eating meat again after being ethical vegetarians. Did they change their minds about whether or not harming animals is bad? No. If pressed, they feel guilty but they don't like to talk about it. The reason they're eating meat is because it's convenient and almost everyone expects them to, not because they reasoned from first principles. Likewise with religion - if no one else is giving everything away to the poor and everyone will think you're crazy if you do rather than praising you, you're not going to give everything away to the poor even if it would make sense to do so given what you believe.
Edit: Kidney donation is another example. I met a woman once who donated a kidney to a friend of her mother's. This person wasn't someone particularly dear to her, but she found out that he needed a kidney to live and she gave him hers. I think that what she did is commendable, but I still have both my kidneys. This is despite the fact that I sincerely believe that if, for example, I saw a drowning child then I would risk my life to save him. People would think I was a hero if I saved the child, or that I was a coward if I didn't try. Meanwhile almost everyone I know would think I went crazy if I donated a kidney to a stranger. My relatives would be extremely worried, and they would try to talk me out of it. I'm not going to do something difficult, painful, and (to an extent) dangerous when everyone I know would disapprove, even if in principle I think risking my life to save another's is a good thing to do.
I think your ideas here go into the right direction, but the confusing part for me is that many of the christians I know are so far below what you'd expect from a christian in these parts (which is already very little) - it's not that they don't give everything away to the poor, they're doing (as far as I can tell) nothing - they don't pray, they don't go to church, and they don't adhere to any of what the bible says they should do beyond maybe basic Golden Rule stuff. And it's not even like most families would make a big deal out of it if you left the faith or even became fully atheist. Most do pay the church tax, though, which is about 1% of your gross income.

I was using Reddit is fun and when the killed the API I came here but still occasionally checked the Reddit app. Can't remember what exactly put me over the edge but it was something about ads on the app I couldn't handle anyone.
Laptops are not generally designed to run like that with a closed lid. Heat dissipation is designed around the idea the laptop is open and some of it is through the keyboard surface. The lid closed would change that.
Systems can of course be setup to power off the display but for server/service uses open laptops may not be efficient space wise.
Having said that if the scenario is low power use the heat dissipation may not be a major issue. But if there is an unremovable battery i'd still be concerned about heat dissipation with the lid closed and even just the battery itself regardless of heat dissipiation.

Since I haven't had an opportunity to even go through the process of voting, despite trying, waiting for ~2 hours, only to close at 8pm and officers ordered everyone still waiting to leave, I have no experience with the actual process of voting.
So how does the process actually work? From my understanding, unless I'm mistaken, don't people get to vote on numerous positions at once, not just the president?
Like, I'd be looking at the options and be wondering who half or more of the candidates even are, and also not even being sure exactly what the nature of their job is in the bigger picture, not knowing a damn thing about them to make any educated decision.
Also, from my understanding, in my state, if you vote Democrat, you have to vote all Democrats, and if you vote Republican, you have to vote all Republicans. Like what the hell do names and campaign goals even mean if you don't have the option to vote Democrat for one office, but might actually like the campaign goals of a Republican for another office?
It's like what the hell do names even matter, if I'm a registered Democrat voter (which I am), then shouldn't they already know how I'd vote anyways?

We stood in line for around 2 hours. For about the last half hour of waiting it was raining. Around half of everyone knew the weather forecast and had an umbrella, including us.
They closed the voting place (library) down at 8pm sharp, and the cops told everyone in line to go home. We were probably 150~200 people back in line.
We all waited that long, even in the fucking rain, only to be ordered to leave?!
If it matters (which it probably does), our state doesn't have early voting, you get one day to do it and that's it.
Wait 2 goddamn hours, partly in the rain, only to get shut down with around 200 people or so waiting to vote?!
Sooo.. I've never had a chance to see the inside of a voting facility. Not for lack of trying though.
Having worked the polls: if you are in line to vote, you get to vote. The cops do not have any grounds to order you to leave your polling location because it’s “too late”. That is a violation of your rights as a citizen. The correct response is “make me; and if you do, I’ll have your fucking job, officer”.
We're also not supposed to have a felon for president in the first place, he shouldn't have been eligible to even run for office. But here we are, guess you poll workers didn't protest that either huh?

You know mail-in, absentee, and provisional ballots are a thing, right?
Also, if you're in line to vote and the polling place is set to close, you still have the right to cast your ballot, no matter how long it takes. They can turn new people away, but they can't just close up and send people home if they've been waiting. If you were told to leave, those cops violated the law. And if they absolutely had to close, they're required to give out provisional ballots. Know your rights dude.

However those who were alive in 2000's know Maxtor went bankrupt and haven't made hardrives for a very long time. One of these drive i got BRAND NEW, in box at a flea market. sadly time got to the platters first, i spent a few hours trying to reformat or partition them and all i got was write errors. I tried different utility's with no avail and decided to cut my losses, so i asked the boys what we should do with them? Immediately my friend had an idea, to bring out his 9mm and see how a hardrive would fair! We all took turns and they were pretty hard to hit (we made the mistake of drink soda before hand). We eventually landed some shots on the center of the drives and MAN it actually stopped 2 bullets!!! going into this we all expected the disk to be unreadable after the fact, but didnt think the hardrives would stop a 9mm bullet!!
We then took the hdd's apart after are volley of bullets, and alot of the chips were damaged and all the platters were bent. But when we took off the top case, it looked so freakin cool i had to keep it

I'm kinda not surprised it stopped the 9mm. It's not the most powerful round. Also, several platters is basically like spaced armor, which is more bullet resistant than the same total thickness in one chunk. Ever shot a gun before this?
Here’s a great hack sent in to us from [Simon]. He uses an e-paper photo frame as a weather map!
By now you are probably aware of e-paper technology, which is very low power tech for displaying images. E-paper only uses energy when it changes its display, it doesn’t draw power to maintain a picture it has already rendered. The particular e-paper used in this example is fairly large (as e-paper goes) and supports color (not just black and white) which is why it’s expensive. For about US$100 you can get a 5.7″ 7-color EPD display with 600 x 448 pixels.
Beyond the Inky Frame 5.7″ hardware this particular hack is mostly a software job. The first program, written in python, collects weather data from the UK Met Office. Once that image data is available a BASH script is run to process the image files with imagemagick. Finally a Micro Python script runs on the Pico to download the correct file based on the setting of the real-time clock, and update the e-paper display with the weather map.
That's super cool. I see a lot of potential for e-ink displays that is just starting to take off. Billboards, airport info boards, programmable qr codes. It's so much nicer to look at a display that isn't backlit and they just sip power. This is a perfect application for one.
It just goes to show you. The only way to get the Linux desktop market share up is not building. Something better than Windows we have been there for a while. It's make hardware, put Linux on that hardware and sell it in a store. Avg people don't change operating systems. They change computers. Now if we could just get steam decks in retail stores. It would be a huge.
my country has had a law forcing manufacturers to provide alternatives to windows. many computers come with linux here, and we have a weirdly high market share for linux because of it.
Ah that makes sense i know Brazil has laws to keep imports low. That's why Brazil kept the saga mega drive active for so long. So having Linux on machines makes sense. Since it's both an import and not an import at the same time.
thats not really the reason brazil does this. our restrictions on imports come because our ruling class makes pretty much nothing and rely on having a cornered retail market they can profit off of. just capitalism things, kind of unique but nothing really new.
back then, the argument was about "venda casada" (no idea how to translate this). its when you buy something and you are forced to buy something else on their terms to make it work. they ruled that manufacturers can't force you to buy a windows license from them when you are already paying for a computer from them.
instead of selling it without an os, many of them offered linux as an option and passed the savings on to the customer, not unlike some manufacturers are doing in the us nowadays. most people got it with the intention of reformatting the machines with pirated windows for free, but many tried it and stuck with linux. we got a lot of adoption for a while there.
It's a shame more developers don't target Linux! Anyway I have been Steam gaming on Linux for about 10 years now and it's amazing how good games targeted at Windows run through Proton. I have many games that are targeted for Windows and run BETTER on Fedora.

Prominent KDE developer Nate Graham put out a blog post today reaffirming the KDE Plasma's intent that Wayland is their main focus and X11 support continues to be maintained but eventually it will go away. Nate Graham also noted around 73% of KDE Plasma 6 users are already using the Wayland session.
Bit chicken and egg though, isn't it? Maybe a big desktop environment enforcing Wayland will get people working more on the fixes for the stuff that doesn't work out yet.

Yes, some multi monitor configurations work, yes, yours might work just fine, but there's plenty of recent posts on kde.org forums showing the issue is far from isolated.
Multi monitor has issues in KDE itself as well, I'm on AMD and there are a few really annoying (and confirmed) bugs when it comes to multi monitor setups. Some bugs go waaaaay back.
Touch support really needs some love because OOF. I understand why it's maybe not a priority, but I have a nice little 2-in-1 and I'm tired of pretending like tablets don't at least deserve their niche.
Any good gesture support software I might be missing?

X11’s upstream development has dropped off significantly in recent years, and X11 isn’t able to perform up to the standards of what people expect today with respect to support for multi-monitor setups, high DPI monitors, HDR, VRR, other fancy monitor features, multi-GPU setups, screen tearing, security, crash robustness, input handling, and more.

Well, if your hardware or games happen to need a new kernel or Mesa, then yes. But many do not, so it's not absolute. Also, many gamers get Mesa from Flatpak or Steam instead of their distro, in which case the version provided by Debian doesn't matter at all.

All of the major distros run games with comparable performance. Some make setup a little more convenient than others in certain cases, like if you need a bleeding-edge kernel for just-released hardware.
Pick a desktop distro that you like working with. Chances are it can run games just fine even if it needs a few tweaks.
The biggest problem with d&d axes is that people try to pick an alignment and then have their character's actions come from it (and the resulting frequently induced cross-table talk with the eye-rolling phrase "a lawful/neutral/chaotic good/neutral/evil character wouldn't do that! You're X/Y, so you wouldn't do that!").
No real person has every action fall within one of the outlying boxes' bounds. Actually 'moving' yourself from the neutral spot is (supposed to be) beyond most mortals.
In quite a few cases across the different editions, this behavior is enforced by class requirements. Though even then it's still dumb to argue about that unless you're at the point that the GM has to seriously consider changing your alignment because your actions are so far beyond your character's on-paper alignment.

So I'm looking for a distro that I can put on my laptop in addition to kde neon and boot into when I want to save battery. The thing is I'm not even sure if I can expect a noticeable difference or if the display and applications I want to use (mostly just basic office stuff and maybe a browser but I want to use this in the forest so I won't have wifi anyway) already draw so much power that background processes don't really matter. If you think they do then I'd like to hear about especially efficient distros. I'm not a poweruser though so anything that requires extensive setup or maintainance won't work for me sadly. I was thinking maybe something like kanotix that loads to RAM but like I said I'm not sure if that actually saves power.

I love ray tracing and path tracing when they're done right. Ik fully ray traced scenes are hardly playable even on high end cards without upscaling but like if one has a powerful enough card, why not utilize its potential? Yet most people don't seem to care about RT.
When it comes to upscaling though, I hate it, and I'm not even talking about frame gen. It makes things look blurry and causes annoying artifacts. I think playing on lowest settings with clear textures is more enjoyable long term than maxed out in 4k with a consistently blurry image. Also this new technology makes devs care less about optimization (which will backfire btw as we're approaching the physical limit of transistor size).

I don't how how to fix it, the desktop app has the required permissions, and the Android app has as many storage permissions as I can give it under Android's horrible SAF limitations.
It seemed to used to be happening only to some specific old files, but now it's happening to all the new files I add onto my laptop under Videos or Music.
In addition, when trying to sync files with a specific server, it shows as disconnected, even when both are online and connected to the LAN (my phone via WiFi, the server via Ethernet), and there is some error about encryption expectations

I've obfuscated the directory paths, but they're all full paths and the script will build a VM. So basically just setting up a basic system, using the default network. Here's the config for that:
When this VM is installing, and when it's booted, it does not have an IP. Meanwhile, if I go through virt-manager and select the default network, it gets an IP just fine. I've tried running the virt-install command w/ and w/o sudo (I run virt-manager as me - I'm in the libvirt group). Looking at the virt-manager built VM:

Only difference I can see is one is created using virt-install and the other using virt-manager (which calls to virt-install, no?). I thought there was a way to see the actual virt-install command virt-manager was about to use when creating a VM, but I can't find it. Also can't find any logs to give me an idea why the VM isn't getting an IP. Running ethtool on the VM interface shows a link. I've wasted too much time getting this to work, and all the documentation suggests it should "just work!"

I have a VPS (hetzner) set up with docker, caddy for the reverse proxy, and authentik as the only login method for a couple of services (hedgedoc and forgejo). Since most of these has to be available and accessible on the internet, I also setup crowdsec and built caddy with the relevant bouncer. This allows crowdsec to inspect the caddy logs for all the services I am serving through it and act accordingly. Edit: all the services are in docker containers.
So far, so good. However, I also saw that crowdsec can directly monitor container logs with the docker integration or through container labels. Also, I saw a couple of collections on crowdsec hub specifically for Authentik and Gitea.
I feel I am missing something so my question are:
Would it be useful to monitor container logs given my setup or would it be redundant?
Should I add the app-specific collections, or would docker logs monitoring be enough?

Looking for Privacy-Oriented Open-Source Android Browsers
I'm looking for a privacy-focused, open-source Android browser. Here are some options I've found: * IronFox – Privacy-oriented and recommended by LibreWolf. GitLab Link * Fennec F-Droid – Seems like development has stopped. F-Droid Link * Waterfox – Waterfox Link * Librewolf – Privacy-focused but not sure about Android support.
Is there any other browser out there that fits this criteria? Is there an even better choice? I’m particularly interested in ones that focus on privacy.
I have been tossing around the idea of a little distro hopping. I'm an avid mint fan. It was my first jump from windows. I became quite familiar with mint but felt the want to branch out and went down the rabbit hole (oh my lanta). I like stability and cleanliness. Security by default. Least mental load possible long-term.
I'm currently testing out NIXos. Next will be VanillaOS, 3rd will be Fedora Silverblue. Anyone have good recommendations? Easy backups, stability, security first posture, least maintenance and memory load. I hate getting scattered in symlinks, scripts, and filesystem placing.
I've tried going full custom Linux mint. But app armour and Firejail constantly conflict or require manual updating and tweaking to keep up to date with app installs, or general life cycle updates.
The most intriguing aspect if NIXos was that basically the entire configurable system was confined to two files. Infinitely reproducable. I tend to swap laptops or hardware relatively often being on the go or getting good tech deals. Having your entire system in two files essentially is awesome.

Qubes is good. Not super daily driver friendly. Lots of tweaks needed. I use a laptop like a phone replacement. Banking, apps, messaging, all sorts of usual phone tasks. Also Qubes is too resource heavy on a laptop, it drains the batteries in a couple hours on basic usage. Takes 16 gigs if RAM to run and 32gb to breathe really. Plus 30 ish percent CPU idle roughly on a 12th gen Intel i7.
It's too heavy to daily, perfect for desktop, just not laptop all day material.

Recently, I came across Preveil, which is a service that can provide end-to-end encryption to either your Outlook, Gmail, or Apple Mail email accounts. It’s free, but if you want more storage, obviously, you will need to pay.
It looks very interesting as this could get others to use end-to-end encryption for the emails without having to move to another provider. However, I haven’t really seen any reviews (besides this one from PC Mag) or others expressing their experience with Preveil, so I am unsure if it’s a good service to use or recommend.

Had to deal with this recently. The cause is openSUSE's move to SELinux on new installs, which by default blocks the required permissions for the RPM version of Steam. You can correct this with these commands:
ausearch -c 'steam' --raw | audit2allow -a -M my-steam to create the permissions file and semodule -X 300 -i my-steam.pp to apply it.
Hopefully this saves someone else from the wild goose chase I went on earlier.
It will be valuable information when we have more data points to compare it against later. The console's high initial sales may very well have little to do with anything except how many Nintendo had available, for instance. It could do Wii U numbers (unlikely), or it could be a mega success, or anything in between. The third party sales might be reflective of the fact that the games are all older and available on other platforms, or it could be that customers are strapped for cash after a higher console purchase price, or any of a number of other reasons. I would just encourage people not to make a narrative out of this yet.

Growing up, I didn't really question why this band would be played along side Nirvana, Bush, Soundgarden, Linkin Park, etc. because my radio station of choice was not just grunge, but also "adult alternative." So it would play pop shit, too, sometimes.
But I still, to this day, often find U2 listed among grunge artists, or their songs get played on grunge playlists. The fuck? How is this shit grunge? It doesn't fit in any way! It doesn't have the sound, it doesn't have the style, shit it doesn't even have the same emotional resonance. It's happy and hopeful.
Yeah, I cannot recall ever hearing U2 referred to under a specific subgenre of rock, especially not grunge. Personally, if I hat to choose, I think classifying them as generic rock is more accurate.

Hi all! We'd like to stop using our plastic cutting boards due to cutting little bits of plastic into our food. Unfortunately, the most obvious alternative, wooden cutting boards, are more of a pain to clean.
I'd love suggestions on what I could use instead. I saw there's a brand called Epicurean that uses some sort of other material that can be machine washed. Has anyone used them before?
I'd especially love something made in Germany or in the EU, but I'm open to looking farther afield if necessary.

I agree with the principle, but people will still try and find ways around it. Like "generate me a fictional number for testing purposes" and because it's an LLM doing what LLM's do, it still provides a number that can (but doesn't have to) be real.

Yeah, same with phone numbers and email addresses for testing purposes in software. Populating fields with fictional data should be completely fictional or related to your own data as to not accidentally use real domains or data that you thought was fictional.

This blog post is already quite long, so it will omit changes merged for Plasma 6.5 (releasing in October, to be announced in a future post).
With the Plasma 6.2 release, we moved Plasma Dialer and Spacebar to the Plasma release cycle, allowing us to have consistent releases of the two apps. This completes our year long move to having all Plasma Mobile related projects released as part of wider KDE releases, streamlining the work for distributions and taking a load off us on having to maintain a separate release cycle!
In other news, a Fedora spin for Plasma Mobile was released! It will only be targeting devices that can currently boot Fedora (i.e. not ARM phones), but is very exciting nonetheless!

Last time i tried plasma mobile it was unbearably slow (even slower then the normal unbearably slow) so i switched to phosh, but I would like to try it again so let's see if these updates made it any more usable.
UPDATE: Honestly i'm impressed, it might be because currently im not running waydroid beside it like i did on my previous Phosh install but it feels very responsive. With the angelfish browser providing a way better experience then firefox. The battery life is still very bad but outside that this could be used as a regular phone.
