Hard to say. I'm not a historian, so I can only speculate. I would assume that Hitler would eventually select a successor and there is no way of telling how good that person would be at keeping the Reich in order.

As far as I understand it, the fall of the Soviet Union was preceded by at least a decade of economic struggle that was caused by a multitude of factors. Basically the only thing they had to export was oil and weapons and the only nations they could trade with were relatively poor. When their oil production cost kept rising, they just couldn't keep their exports high enough to import enough food and luxury goods to keep their population happy. This was a prime driver for unrest in regions that bordered the west, especially East Germany who of course got news of what life in West Germany was like. The Soviets were eventually forced to open the Berlin Wall and from there, there was nothing they could do to keep people from just leaving and fully collapsing the economy in the process. To this day, 35 years after the reunion, former East Germany is way behind the rest of the country even though on paper they have the same chances as everyone else, just because there has been a massive brain drain.
So overall, the collapse of the Soviet Union was less a failure of communism itself and more a failure to counteract their economic weaknesses as well as a result of their isolationism. The USA didn't win the Cold War because of the inherent superiority of capitalism but because the world drinks Coca Cola, wears jeans, watches Hollywood movies and works with IBM-compatible PCs. If the Soviet Union had pivoted their economy to those kinds of goods and had managed to export them to the west, they might have become what China is today.
So it all comes down to the question if alternate-history Germany manages to do that. With technology advancing slower overall and therefore becoming less of a factor in global markets, and at the same time keeping a lot of top scientists who in the real world left for the other superpowers, they could probably do it.

Hi, on fresh install (multiple) of Fedora 42 GNOME the KDE Connect app after install wont open.
Either it will stay running in processes but nothing will display or it will immediately crash with an error.
GSconnect doesn't even show up after install.
If I install Fedora 42 KDE it works fine. But I don't like KDE. Any idea what's up with this?

In the end I found that I will just use KDE Connect for clipboard between my laptop, PC and phone but the desired functionality I wanted when connected to my phone is available with scrcpy and it's quite something. Can't believe it has such a stupid name as I never heard of it. It's so freaking good!
Hmm, that doesn't show a lot of details but it seems correct. Gnome should have an Extension manager. It should show up if you type some first letters of the word "Extensions" into the app overview. Maybe look if shows up there and got activated.
But thanks, I found GS conncect in the Extension manager... Why the hell is it even there? Anyhow, it works. But the fact I cant uninstall KDE Connect now drives me crazy... Time for fresh system install I guess... Again
Just in case you haven't started reinstalling yet, dnf has a transaction history. I can't look a link up right now, but the command goes something like "dnf history undo ", where the number is the transaction id of the transaction that installed KDE connect. You can find the transaction id in "dnf history"
By the way. AFter fresh install I've installed GSConnect directly from extensions and it immediatelly shows up in the menu by default. The GSConnect from Discover store shows as not installed. Also nowhere in the Discover store it says it's an extensions.
They really need to make this more clear tbh, it's very confusing for people who never used it.
Maybe Discover isn't the best choice. I believe that's made for the KDE desktop and Gnome should come with "Gnome Software" per default?! I'm not entirely sure what kind of concept Fedora has. I usually use the command line or some of the older package managers with more options and settings, so I can't really tell what's best here. These modern and shiny ones also regularly confuse me and I install Flatpaks by accident or whatever. Maybe try something else, maybe the Fedora community has some recommendations for a better one.
So got GSConnect to work... I had to also enable it in Extension manager for some reason. I had no idea it's an extension since I've just i stalled it as RPM package from the discover store.
Anyhow, it's just confusing. I was installing KDE Connect on both my PC and laptop. I never even heard of GSConnect until I started troubleshooting and I thought it's just some GNOME fork of KDE-Connect, not actually a mandatory replacement for KDE-Connect on GNOME.
It may make sense in the name but the name makes it even more confusing. Since it works on Android/Windows,... Why would I not assume it will work on Linux GNOME?

I quit vaping just four months ago. I switched from smoking when I moved to another city where smoking on public property is illegal. Vaping only caused me to continue nicotine use for about five more years at a much more constant rate.

Yes, every application has access to everything. The only exception are those weird apps that use the universal framework or whatever that thing is called, those need to ask for permissions. But most of the apps on your PC have full access to everything.
And Windows does collect and upload a lot of personal information and they could easily upload everything on your system. The same of course applies for the apps as well, they have access to everything except privileged folders (those usually don’t contain your personal data, but system files).

I now do some work with computers that involves making graphics cards do computational work on a headless server. The computational work it does has nothing to do with graphics.

It's kind of buggy where I'll enter characters but they won't register. I can verify this because when booting, sometimes my num and caps lock keys will have a delay after pressing before their light changes.
This is very annoying when trying to unlock the computer, because I essentially have to wait an arbitrary amount of time before I think inputs will register properly. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if I could, you know, get some feedback that they keys I'm entering are actually being entered.
Is there a way to change this to suit my needs better?
I changed my mkinitcpio hook from the busybox initencrypt to systemd init sd-encrypt to help with this, as it presents a different way to unlock a LUKS partition. Your mileage may vary since im not sure which OS you're on.
Not that I don't still love using linux daily, but it is getting a little old having to search for how to do anything even just install a simple program (recently, had a. Deb file to install unifi software that wouldn't install and had to find a custom script to do it).
I feel like there's no way I'd ever learn all the random commands I've been copying and pasting (and keeping in a text file for later) and can't help but feel it's kind of clunky. And I don't feel like I really know anything of what Im doing. Even man pages baffle me. I've been into computing for 20 years but only used linux a little like 8 years ago, but now it's been my main os on my desktops for probably 2 months. I know, maybe that's just not long enough. I just don't like the fact that if I couldn't search, I'd be completely stuck on a lot of tasks.
A good start is to install tldr. You use it like man, but it gives you shorter explanations – or rather, a short list of illustrative examples.
As for man pages themselves (which I often find overwhelming, too), if you're not doing that already, you can pipe it into grep to extract just those lines that contain your search string:
man ps | grep user
# or for two lines of context above and below each match:
man ps | grep user -C 2
Going further, check out Fish instead of Bash. I haven't use Fish yet, but it's said to be much better for learning Linux commands as a beginner. Later on, you may switch to Zsh. In any case, hitting Tab once or twice will often give you a list of possible completions to the command you are typing.

I put Mint Cinnamon on an older laptop just this past weekend and had a lot of fun with it. Are there any migration tips for my main Windows machine? I was thinking of going with Bazzite since it's my gaming box. What about saved game data and whatnot? I was reading about Putty and SSH ing over to the laptop, but I'm not sure what a good strategy is for my desktop.
This but what they forgot is on multiple drives. Power failures, drive failures, lost, stolen, dropped, you name it. A good set of backups is fucking worth everything peace of mind and more.
Bazzite is a lot less user friendly than mint in major ways. You get everything in mint as you do on Bazzite. I switched to Bazzite and it lasted 2 days before going back to mint. KDE is too deep unnecessarily so. Bazzite doesn't gain you much at all, at this point in time 3 years ago or so I'd not said the same thing. Mint is so polished for gaming shit usually just works now. It's not worth the hype, hassle. I've distro hopped and always came back to mint.
Source is I been there and done all that and more. Your not missing out on anything. Spin up a live USB and try it but believe me dearly it's not worth moving all your stuff reinstalling etc etc. Keep the work flow you got and master it. Other options have more maintenance and headaches.
KDE is too deep on options and is heavier to run on PC resources not a lot but I'm a lean builder, especially for gaming rigs.
KDE bazzite app names are not easy to understand like mint at all. Workflow is different, menus, options. The reason mint is so highly spoken of and recommended is because it's truly refined and polished for the GUI user. App names are sane/understandable, system functions are low maintenance and hands off once basic setup is done. Drivers are all automatically handled for the most part.
The only thing I noticed with bazzite that could be considered superior is immutability. That's it. Everything else seemed somewhat a step backwards and you can gain all the codecs and drivers in mint mostly again automatically as you plug in your hardware the system will reconfigure itself. With proper backups, as you should always have, mint provides nearly the same guarantees. Keep extension, applets, desklets low count and don't modify the system to an inane amount it'll remain dead stable either in LMDE6 or Ubuntu main version.
I have distro hopped many times for various reasons, hassle and headaches days weeks in terminal borking shit. Bazzite, Fedora, NIXos, Mint, Qubes, LMDE6, and several others. I'm not saying don't test the waters on other distros but believe me and everyone. FOMO IS REAL. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Especially with transition changes and relearning. Keep it simple. Enjoy your PC.
(Use a live USB don't reinstall your entire system multiple times you'll get fed up and hate Linux, put your home folder on its own partition on your drive then aim any OS at it you end up choosing this is smarter for many reasons than hopping distros)
Mint is so highly recommended because it's one of and arguably the best/first distro to offer a plug and play, damn near seamless experience on Linux for the average person looking to ditch Windows and doing about anything. Most distros on Linux are somewhat the same loosely anyhow. You can tweak and harden mint nearly the same as any other distro.

I actually just moved my gaming PC from Win11 to Mint Cinnamon 2 weeks ago. There was some driver fuckery (I have an Nvidia card) that made things a bit wonky but everything worked out after some adjustments.
Do you mostly game through steam? Do you install your games on a separate drive?
Steam makes the transition the easiest. All of my games "just worked" with Steam. There were a few modifications required to ensure stability with the games settings but it was mostly smooth sailing for me.
I just used thumb drives to pull all my games save files to and an external drive to back up all my installed games so I wouldn't have to re download them. Save game files are usually pretty small so all of the ones I had backed up on a single thumb drive and Steam and Linux creates a faux Windows folder system for each game and you just reinsert the save games in those folder structures at the correct spot.

Sorry for the late reply but the driver stuff was me trying out proprietary vs community Nvidia drivers and then just weird things that would happen on restarts after switching/updating drivers. I have an intermittent issue where the primary monitor (I have two) alternates being entirely light grey, red, blue, and green upon startup I haven't researched it yet because I just restart the computer and it is fine. And it has happened maybe 3 times over the last month (amongst dozens of restarts). There are a few things like that that only happened once so I wrote off the occurrence.
I have had the most luck with the proprietary Nvidia driver so far.
Originally I planned to switch in October when support for W10 runs out, but it seems my PC made the push for me.
At the start of July some issue with windows that caused my system to freeze and then get stuck on boot when restarted finally bricked my system for a 2nd time this year and I was forced to reinstall the OS again. So, instead of wasting another 4 months on dealing with all the crap windows has been throwing my way lately, I just jumped ship to mint.
3 weeks in and, so far so good. Really got around to all the personalization it allows over windows. Learning to run a pc mostly through the terminal has been a step out of the comfort zone, but an enjoyable one tbh

For the most part, it works well without needing too much tinkering by the user. It's the Fisher Price My First Distro.
I tried it out with a 21.3 dualboot with Windows 11 and within 2 or 3 months I hadn't gone back to Windows other than to push files over. Sure, there were a few "learning opportunities" with tweaks or weird driver issues that were because of the particular hardware I'm using, but they were manageable. At this point I'm running 22.1 only on this machine.
The nice part is that being Ubuntu-based, if I run into a problem, I can search for both the more widely-documented Ubuntu version of the issue, or look for a Mint-related version. Claude does a great job with small-to-medium troubleshooting rather than me dig through forums. It's low-risk, low-work, high-reward.
Calling it a "Fischer Price" distro is a little patronizing. I'm a seasoned Linux user and I use Mint for work because I just want something that works when my paycheck is on the line. Mint has never broken on me and always works.
I ran it for a while, and loved it. Cinnamon is sleek and feels polished. The installation is really fast and not bloated with garbage software.
Everything generally works, and the interface feels familiar.
It is Ubuntu/Debian under the hood, so compatibility with most software is good. Bleeding edge drivers may run into issues, but most of them work with a little fiddling.
It's worth a try. If nothing else toss it on a USB drive and give it a test drive.
I ran Ubuntu for like 15 years and was especially recently getting frustrated by how far behind the packages always were. I'm full in on Arch - everything about it has been a much better experience.
That's one of the beauties of Linux, if you need something else than want you can probably get another distro that suits your needs. OP was asking about newbies. I set up Mint for my mom. I can guarantee that she won't change.
The good thing about distro hopping is refining your setup to the point that "burning down the desktop" becomes a relative non-event, your important personal files are elsewhere - nothing gets lost if your desktop SSD goes all "I'm sorry, sir, I don't recall..."

Running up-to-date software gives me far less problems than running software full of bugs that were fixed 5 years ago, personally. If you find a new bug, you can at least report it and hope to see it fixed in the next update. You find bugs that were fixed years ago, but the fixed version isn't in your repo, and then you have to start building things yourself.
Recently I was using Ubuntu and needed to recall a terminal command I had used a couple weeks prior. Luckily, my terminal commands are logged in the ~/.bash_history text file. Easy, convenient, customizable, and no AI needed!
Great effort and all but until we can get an .exe to run in windows to install the new system, this will not attract anybody but the 0.01%.
Yes, for us in the know it’s no biggie to get an USB stick, play with Rufus or the kind, fiddle with ”BIOS” but for the average user even the first step is just too much.
Windows can install new Windows and modify EFI stuff, and macOS can install new macOS so why can’t Linux use the same mechanisms? Especially as in the history there used to be some projects that could do this…
Best chance in decades to bring Linux to desktop and it looks like we blew it by being too accustomed to difficulty, not being united behind the effort and whatnot 🙁
Yo, you're giving me ideas. Maybe I can make use of my old laptop, get Windows on it (if possible), and try to do something like this. Could the average user run something through the terminal? I know PowerShell and some CMD. Or I could figure out how to GUI as well. I'd need to sketch out what such an app would do. Downloading a Linux distro would be step one. Not sure if I could make BIOS changes, though, and install. I guess with my current abilities, it'd end up being an auto ISO downloader and USB flasher at best. But I'd be down to learn and try. I'd need a basic Install Linux 101 guide, to "mimic" through a script. Could be a fun project.

Eh, now that I think about it, such a project would either need to take a lot of decisions for the user, or risk becoming too complex for giving the user options. I mean, I see partitioning, and I realise that's something I hadn't thought of. I assumed just an install, but what if the user wants dual boot? What distro to pick? How much space for each "boot"? Do we choose a specific DE or take the distro's main or default? So many variables. I mean, it's one thing to BAM! Ubuntu auto-installer .exe. Now, to allow for user choices… or not to? You either give options, which could be overwhelmimg to someone who might not even understand all that, or become simple and, in the process, heavily "opinionated"
I have no reason to believe the average person can't manage a usb stick. They're a common way for photos, videos, and records to be sent from one business office to another. I've never worked with anyone who had any particular difficulty using them, and my coworkers weren't all especially intelligent or interested in computers.
I disagree. Sure, they are able to stick the drive to machine and use some easy tool (would need to be easier than Rufus) to write some data to it.
But then comes a big hurdle if USB boot is not the default: What is BIOS/UEFI? What key to press to get there? When do I press it? What are these text things? How do I navigate here? What exactly should I change? What is what of these drives listed? How to change the order? How to save? (Have witnessed this struggle a dozen times)
And IF they get through that step, then depending on distro they have very different kind of installation UI, all sorts of options they know nothing about, and they no longer have their browser and guide page open that they had when they started the operation.
We should not merely target the ”average person” but also, to a degree, the dumb masses below them. Look how simple the Windows 10 to Windows 11 installation has been made, there really is no way you can mess it up. If I remember correct, even upgrading from 7 to 10 was just: download ISO, double click to mount it, run setup.exe, click next a few times, and let it reboot and do its thing.
Installing an iso from a usb drive and installing an iso after mounting it as a virtual drive seem like they involve roughly the same level of technical skill to me. Booting from cd or usb was a routine school or business activity for decades. Mounting an iso as a drive has been built into Windows for a much shorter period of time. The last time I used Windows, you needed third party software for that. I would bet on a random person off the street to be able to do the first one more reliably than the second. But, more installation options are always better.
for all Ubuntu haters there is a Debian Version of Mint. And second Linux Mint is the perfekt set and forget Distro. No Tinkering for a basic PC without special Requirements.

I'm already using Linux on an old laptop (Zorin) so I'm not inexperienced, but good lord that's a faff and a half. I have a life!
My advice: run a server (any server) or three, and keep your important / personal stuff there. It can be as simple as a Raspberry Pi with a big external SSD. The PC you use as a desktop environment should be easily built / configured from the base distro into whatever customizations you want, and you can either work with your personal files on the server, or mirror copies of them to your desktop system as appropriate (things like "living documents" should be primarily stored and backed up on servers, things like photo collections etc. can be stored on the server, but copied to the desktop for easy access like rotating wallpaper or whatever.)
If (when, really) any one of your systems goes down, it shouldn't be a big deal. If it's a server, restore from another server mirror / backups. If it's your desktop, install a new desktop and get your customizations off a server.
Of course this is an ideal, but keep in mind that SSDs are not "forever" devices, they do wear out and each single copy of your data will be corrupted some day. Spinning rust is even less reliable, in my experience, although I have one 2TB hard drive that has been online for more than 10 years now. It's mirrored, twice, on SSDs.
I've never learned about servers - never worked in IT, just a simple old hobbyist. Also never used a Raspberry Pi. But thank you! I might get around to reading up on the topic of servers over the winter. My computer has two drives, the original "spinning rust" and an SSD I installed (so quick! so quiet!). My thought is to keep Windows on a partition until I'm sure I like the distro I've chosen.
I have multiple backup drives, from a wee 4Tb Toshiba to a SparQ drive with 1Gb cartridges (a whole gigabyte, how will I ever fill it?). I'm pretty sure I've got everything saved, but I'm equally sure there'll be something I've missed.
I have used linux in a past job (I did not set it up), so im not a total noob with linux. But I am far from an expert. I bought a tablet that had a flavor of linux on it and found myself woefully unprepared trying to navigate the tablet. I was planning to use it for DnD for pdf reading, but it apparently wasn't capable of that bcz it was a rather custom OS. With windows 10 support being dropped by Microsoft in the next few months, I want to transition my desktop to Linux, and I thought I'd get a headstart on that. I have a windows 11 laptop (and I hate it), but im kinda stuck with it for now. So, in the spirit of I am a noob who isn't quite a noob, what do ya'll recommend? p.s. I used Ubuntu for a bit way way back in high school

Desktop environment will be the most impactful for you. I recommend picking a distro with KDE Plasma, which will feel like the best version of Windows you’ve never seen before.
If you are almost exclusively gaming and don’t want to fiddle much, Bazzite.
If you like to fiddle: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed or Fedora. If you want more Ubuntu compatibility, Kubuntu.
There are lots of options and it’s hard to go wrong. Bazzite is special in that the system is immutable, so everything needs to be run as a container.

If you are familiar with Ubuntu still I recommend you fallback to that or if you hate canonical and telemetry then use mint. Honestly bro it depends on what you wanna use it for.
Generally:
Noobs -> popos, Ubuntu, mint, Devs -> fedora, Ubuntu (ease of access), debian Power users -> Arch, Nix, tails, (a bunch of other distros ig since any distro can be used in a powerful way tbh) Neckbeard -> Gentoo, LFS (not really a distro tho but amazing for learning)
But seriously speaking it's your choice bud. All Linux distros work amazing and are all the same to the kernel. You can always install multiple distros on an ext. SSD if you can't decide.
Debian is not as easy as Ubuntu to set up, but much easier than in the past. And once set up, it's rock solid and has long term security updates, so if one can get a little help with the installation, I'd recommend it even to novice users.
And Arch is fantastic if somebody wants to learn more about Linux, because of its fantastic wiki.
I'm a noob myself and have found Kubuntu the best experience so far, although my laptop is a bit niche so a lot of the other distros didn't work correctly.
I think the usual consensus is Linux Mint (and its a solid distro) but I think the best advice is not to be afraid of trying different ones and finding out what works best for you.

Turn away from the money spice trading and Mediterranean shipping traffic brought them because it would make them too rich? Because again, they were a people used to fleeing into a mosquito infested lagoon when their farming population was invaded by multiple armies.

A lot of games are going to work without you having to do anything and some will need some tinkering. In that case, protondb.com/ will be your best friend, telling you exactly what you need to do to get things running.
That being said, some games simply can't be run under Linux. They might work in the future as compatibility improves but some won't. If it's an issue for you, you might want to dual boot windows as a workaround.

Tell me, do you have any particular, material distinction you are making by making a choice between desktop protocols? The desktop protocol is a purely technical thing, and I have not heard a single peep out of you in regards to specifics.
To elaborate, in Xorg, it is a very monolithic beast. It is very convoluted in its purview and carries a lot of preset implementation of its various facets. It contains an entire networking stack for deciding how to communicate windows over a network.
It is significantly less flexible and modular than Wayland, because in Wayland basically everything of significance is decided by the compositor.
This, ironically to your point, actually gives you more choice and freedom in how things work (this is also why tiling window managers love wayland to death, it's pretty easy to just build upon the basic wlroots implementation!). So I have to ask you, frankly, what in the fuck do you think you're actually saying right now?
The issue, in this way, is that you only seem to care about software freedom in the sense of the abstract concept rather than the reality. Xorg is nearly dead and buried. Nobody actually cares about Xlibre. Notice how the only thing being mentioned is the sidenote that this fork is run by a racist troll whose been kicked for cause from several prominent OSS projects. (Some) strengths of Atproto
Atproto is content-addressed, and portable. This means that posts can exist independantly of their original server. Instead of giving posts a https uri, which will stop working if a user moves servers or their server disappears, they give them at uris. For example, this post on bsky.app: bsky.app/profile/ponder.ooo/po… Has the at:// link is: at://did:plc:i4bfh2tyxihe2ksplmtcoopk/app.bsky.feed.post/3lk4yrmyugc2f. The post does exist over https at https://porcini.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.repo.getRecord?repo=did:plc:i4bfh2tyxihe2ksplmtcoopk&collection=app.bsky.feed.post&rkey=3lk4yrmyugc2f.
Atproto is very easy to build apps on. For example, tangled.sh, frontpage.fyi and flushes.app are all apps built on atproto. Atproto allows more flexibility in what an app can do, as opposed to lemmy or mastodon's api.
Atproto is better documented. The ActivityPub spec leaves a lot up to the reader.
Atproto has some really good moderation tools for users. People can make public blocklists of users, and people can subscribe to labellers, people or services which give users/posts a label.
Weaknesses of Atproto
almost everyone is on bluesky's PDSes. I thought mastodon.social and lemmy.world were bad, but the people on alternate PDSes altogether adds up to only a few thousand.
Its decentralised identifiers are actually completely centralised! DID:PLC, their DID method, originally stood for placeholder, but they renamed it to Public Ledger of Credentials. To use it, you have to use plc.directory. You can use a DID:WEB DID, but if your website linked to it goes down you lose your identity. (I find it extremely funny that its not actually a requirement for a decentralised identifier to be decentralised. )
Everything on the network has to be public to work. since relays have to be able to collect all the information on the network for Appviews to be able to make use of that information, anyone can find out who's blocking someone, or who is on a list, or who's following who, with no way of hiding that information. Private accounts and posts are impossible to do on atproto.
Since everything is public, DMs (for now) are centralised. They do seem like they want to change that though.
Strengths of ActivityPub
AP (ActivityPub) is better distributed. While it has large servers (like mastodon.social or lemmy.world (and threads, but we don't talk about threads)) the majority of users are not on those servers. There is no single point of failure. If bluesky disappeared tomorrow, atproto would still exist, it would just have a negligable amount of users.
One node in the network lets you do everything, as opposed to bluesky which has three parts (You can do stuff without a relay though). This means you can trust a lot less of the network.
ActivityPub scales better than ATProto. Atproto scales quadratically, meaning that having a lot of nodes in the network harms performance. AP scales horizontally, meaning it works better with a lot of small servers.
ActivityPub can keep stuff private, like blocks and posts. Though, a lot of implementations can leak posts.
Weaknesses of ActivityPub
The spec leaves somuch out. They didn't propose a way to make sure requests between servers are validated, so mastodon chose HTTP signatures. They didn't add any way of looking up handles, so mastodon chose webfinger.
A posts's id is its https uri, this means thatif a server goes down, stuff can't be fetched. A user can't move their followers if their server goes down (you can on ATproto). There is a standard to fix this, FEP-ef61, but it breaks compatibility with a lot of implementations.
Missing information is a problem. Its not really a problem on lemmy, but on mastodon likes and replies from other servers may not make it to your server at all (you can fetch replies in newer versions of mastodon though).
All this aside, I do think the two can coexist. I don't see anything like lemmy working on atproto. ActivityPub seems closer to social networking, as opposed to social media. Something like facebook would be impossible to make on atproto, because not everything is made to be public.
I am hoping for a bridge, but good (bridgy is opt-in, making it useless).

Similar to yours OP I copy many URLs and then run my script that takes the number of URLs I copied eg 5,and downloads them with yt-dlp and GNU parallel to ~/Videos

Because using docker can sometimes cause ownership issues if not properly configured in your docker-compose.yml, I just added an alias to ~/.zshrc to rectify that.

When you pipe to this, for example ls | clip, it will stick the output of the command ran into the clipboard without needing to manually copy the output.
Little tip: In case you need to use rm directly, even with the alias in effect, you can put a backslah in front of the command to use its original meaning: \rm filename
I'm not sure what you mean with the question. If you have any alias like alias rm='ls -l' in your .bashrc in example, then you cannot use the original command rm anymore, as it is aliased to something else. I'm speaking about the terminal, when you enter the command. However, if you put a backslash in front of it like \rm in the terminal, then the alias for it is ignored and the original command is executed instead.
I've only used aliases twice so far. The first was to replace yt-dlp with a newer version because the version that comes pre-installed in Linux Mint is too outdated to download videos from YouTube. The second was because I needed something called "Nuget". I don't remember exactly what Nuget is but I think it was a dependency for some application I tried several months ago.

I looked through my bash history and it looks like I needed it to build an Xbox eeprom editor for Xemu. Xemu doesn't (or at least didn't, I haven't used newer versions yet) have a built in eeprom editor and editing the Xbox eeprom is required for enabling both wide screen and higher resolutions for the games that support them natively.
I just looked at Xemu's documentation, and it looks like they've added a link to an online eeprom editor, so the editor I used (which they do still link to) is no longer required.
I wrote a script called please. You input please followed by any other command (e.g. please git clone, please wget blahblah) and a robotic voice will say "affirmative," then the command will run, and when it completes, the robotic voice reads out the exit code (e.g. "completed successfully" or "failed with status 1" etc.)
This is useful for when you have a command that takes a long time and you want to be alerted when it's finished. And it's a gentleman.

You can also use something like notifyd to generate a pop up for visual feedback 😀 I can't remember the exact command right now though. Differs per distro or desktop environment, obviously.
Also, printf '\a' will output an alert bell character which should make the terminal beep/blink and be highlighted for attention by your wm/compositor if it's unfocused.
I have that aliased to a to get notified whenever a long running command finishes just by adding ;a at the end.
I usually set up an alias or script to update everything on my system. For example, on Ubuntu, I would do this: alias sysup='snap refresh && apt update && apt upgrade'
And on Arch, I do this: alias sysup ='flatpak update && paru'
Funny enough you'd need to use sudo to run this on Ubuntu, but not in the Arch example because paru being neat
Because: 1. If you install any new software that needs updating, you don't need to update your alias. 2. If any software makes changes that break your alias, (theoretically) the bit of software should be able to fix it quickly, without you needing to pay any attention to it. 3. The bit of software can more easily do advanced things than the simple alias. For example, I added functionality to update JetBrains Toolbox and IDE's installed with it. A simple alias could not do this, because Toolbox does not have a simple update command, however I made it work by enabling automatic updates temporarily, and then inspecting the log for updates. Now the end-user doesn't have to think about this at all. Other things that could be done but are not implemented yet include parallelization, and listing updated components in a neat summary (PR linked).
Of course if you're a minimalist, then you probably don't have that much stuff that needs upgrading in the first place; for me personally I have deb-get, uv, cargo, and flatpak, to name a few; the alias was getting longer and longer until I was able to remove it completely by switching to Topgrade.

Hey OP, consider using $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR instead of /tmp. It's now the more proper place for these kinds of things to avoid permission issues, although I'm sure you're on a single user system like most people. I have clipboard actions set to download with yt-dlp 😀

With how many new Linux users we get recently, I don't like this joke at all without a disclaimer. Yes yes, its your own fault if you execute commands without knowing what it does. But that should not punish someone by deleting every important personal file on the system.
In case any reader don't know, rm is a command to delete files and with the option rm -r everything recursively will be searched and deleted on the filesystem. Option -f (here bundled together as -rf) will never prompt for any non existing file. The / here means start from the root directory of you system, which in combination with the recursive option will search down everything, home folder included, and find every file. Normally this is protected todo, but the extra option --no-preserve-root makes sure this command is run with the root / path.

Kubuntu 25.10 will not ship with an X11 desktop session on its ISO, following Ubuntu's lead. An X11 Plasma session will remain available for manual install.
25% of users sticking with X11 is a very significant amount. which roughly means wayland does not account for the needs of a quarter of its (hostilely taken over, now) userbase
Those users can stick with the last version of KDE or GNOME that supports X11. They're insisting on using unmaintained software already, so it shouldn't be much of a leap to do the same with the DE.
It's really not fair to demand that people building your DE for free maintain two vastly different rendering stacks when they clearly don't want to.
the word insisting shows your arrogance. Insisting on something implies one has a choice. Those who are sticking with X11 are doing so because wayland just does not do what they need.

There are many tools now that replace X11 behavior. If Wayland doesn't "do what they need", at this point there's a strong chance they have not put in any effort into making it work for them.
For desktop forwarding there's waypipe.
For tablet users, KDE (And probably gnome) have pretty good tablet support at this point.
For artists, KDE JUST got much better color calibration.
For gamers, WINE now has an experimental Wayland-native mode, and barring that we have Gamescope to make it behave semi-native (so this one is more of a future-ish solution that you can use now).
Screen recording mostly just works with pipewire and almost everything supports it now including Discord.
Thing is, there's no real software KVM (or rather KM) solution for Wayland. Barrier (and the others) works only on X11.
It's a minor thing, but unfortunately major enough for me to be unable to switch to Wayland at all.
Completely dropping X11 sounds a nightmare in my case. I'm not against dropping X11, if Wayland proves to be a better alternative. But not with "holes" like this. :c
@mizule @kuneho I believe it is actually the Gnome desktop that dropped it. Mate and KDE will continue to support it, don't know about LXDE, XFCE, etc.
On the one hand that means future Kubuntus (for a while) won't have remote desktop, remote UI commands, global hotkeys, nor other such useful features. Or, heck, won't have accessibility. On the other hand, from the progress I've seen KDE are among the better positioned to change that, so who knows. Prepping for a Kubuntu LTS?

the problem now is that while kde and gnome do have most of those things on wayland, it's all bespoke. there are no universal wayland remote desktop systems or accessibility pushes, just "the gnome one" and "the kde one".

Finding an exploitable escalation of privileges in Linux is rare, but unpatched machines get hacked all the time, but the world of worms, and such is kind of gone.
The way most end-user machines get compromised these days is by supply chain attacks, undiscovered zero-day exploits, user error, and social engineering. Groups that discover zero-days usually keep it close the vest, and they don't get found for long periods of time after they've been out in the wild.
The way most corporate machines get attacked is social engineering, supply chain, and zero-days. Mostly crypto mining schemes and enterprise-level ransoms for data.
All the Windows botnets you hear about out there are largely unpatched machines exposed to the internet in various stupid ways that groups prey on to take control of.
Edit: Forgot about leaked secrets. Lots of companies get hit from plaintext secrets that get out in the wild via various stupid means.
@SmoochyPit @monovergent 🛠️ One of the most recent that comes to mind was the exploit in pkexec, a setuid utility for privilege escalation could be abused for unauthorized privilege escalation in either a server or workstation environment.
TLDR: While Linux is less susceptible to malware in some ways, it mostly boils down to Linux having a more technically minded userbase whereas Windows is a "mainstream" operating system.
Most Windows malware nowadays come from social engineering scams (complete this "captcha" by pressing Windows+R and pasting in this powershell script we conveniently put in your clipboard) or untrusted third party installers because Windows doesn't natively have a package manager. Like others have said, the old school self-propagating worms and drive by downloads that activate just by clicking on a link aren't really possible anymore (outside of state actors with unlimited budgets to buy zero days) unless your system or browser is horrifically outdated.
In terms of social engineering, Linux is not necessarily better at preventing it than Windows. In fact, sudo in Linux will unquestioningly delete the kernel and system software or make unlimited changes to them. Windows, for better or for worse (tbh more worse than better), uses TrustedInstaller to limit access to system files. Windows 11 won't easily let you delete or modify System32 for example, even if you're an admin. So it's in theory easier to do more damage to your system on Linux if you don't know what you're doing. But if someone is using Linux full time, they're most likely technical enough to not be fooled into running random untrusted bash commands. The biggest thing is to be careful with those Linux terminal tutorial sites that have a "add to clipboard" button, they can put literally anything into your clipboard, including an enter key to run the script as soon as you put it in your terminal (though this may or may not be possible depending on your terminal app). Actually, they don't even need you to use their copy button. They can just set an event listener for control-C anywhere on their site and automatically replace the clipboard content. Just double check everything you copy before running it, especially since there's a lot of times where Linux users have to rely on obsecue tutorials hosted on untrusted websites.
You also don't really need to run untrusted installers on Linux because almost everything you need is in a properly moderated software repository, be it your native package manager, Flatpak, or Snap. Everything is signed by the authors and has a ton of eyes from the open source community on it. The only things to look out for is compiling something from GitHub, random AppImages, random Elf binaries, and last but not least random third party repositories that can be added as an installation source to your package manager/Flatpak/Snap. Basically, Linux gets most of its "doesn't get malware" reputation from the same place Mac does: you rarely have to manually download and run an executable from a random website, which is the norm on Windows. Add to the fact that even when that's needed, the Linux userbase is more technical and is more able to discern which sources are reputable and which are suspicious.
Another major source of malware is pirated versions of Windows or untrusted "license activators" from the internet. This just isn't a problem on Linux because there's no license to activate and it's free to begin with so there's nothing to pirate. And again, if someone is running Linux, they're probably technical enough to know not to run random pirated versions of paid software to begin with, helped by the fact that the vast majority of paid software is Windows only.

I'm having an issue with my Jellyfin server and hoping that you lovely wizards can help me...again.
So I initially tried and failed to set up Jellyfin on elementaryOS(skill issue), I wasn't really invested in the OS so I just switched to Ubuntu. Things have been much easier for the get go. I now have set up Jellyfin on my ubuntu 24.04.2 and uploaded my library from my external hdd. Now I cant figure out how to connect other devices so I can watch my media on my macbook. I currently also use a PIA vpn with port forwarding on due to my qbit seeding. I feel like that is important info. I've looked up how to connect while one the same network but since I need my vpn to stay on I'm feeling a little outside my depth again. Ultimate goal is to be able to access my library on other devices mainly, mainly my macbook, while also being able to seed from Qbit safely.
I think I understand your question. The VPN should let you connect in the exact same method you use when you're on the same network. Example: connecting to 192.168.X.X:8096 when local, is exactly how you would with the VPN on.
I haven't had to deal with this specific kind of use case before (accessing the local Jellyfin service while the laptop is connected to a VPN), but after some cursory research, one of these approaches may work for you:
Easy Option (only available on some VPN software):
There may be an option in your VPN client that lets you access local network addresses like your Jellyfin server. Check your settings and see if there are any options like "allow local network traffic" and then try opening up your Jellyfin server in a browser (e.g.: 192.168.1.100:8096/)
Less Easy Option:
If your VPN client doesn't have an option for allowing local traffic, you can open up the command prompt on your macbook and run a command like this: sudo route add -net 192.168.1.0/24 192.168.1.1
Where 192.168.1.0/24 is the local network you want to connect to, and 192.168.1.1 is your local gateway (change these depending on how your local network IP addresses are formatted).
This should update your routing table to handle local network addresses without the VPN and this should persist between reboots.
I bought Zelda TotK right after release for Switch 1, just to be presented with a bright, blurry game with loading screens that I, personally, couldn't live with. I retired it after about an hour, uninstalled it from my console and sold the game on eBay.

EDIT: tldr - I was having issues creating a VM using Virtual Machine Manager on Bazzite Linux. Several responders chimed in that it's likely because I'm using the flatpak version of VMM. I probably still could make it work on Bazzite somehow, perhaps w/ the help of distrobox, but instead I've fired up a VM on an old laptop running Linux Mint and everything is smooth sailing. Background: I'm looking to set up a virtual Debian server using Virtual Machine Manager, but I'm stuck on creating my first VM. I'm running Bazzite on my host machine if that makes any difference.
Steps to Reproduce the Issue:
Launch Virtual Machine Manager.
Click File > New Virtual Machine, which opens the "New VM - Step 1" window.
Select "Local install media" and click Forward, which brings me to "New VM - Step 2."
Click "Browse..." which opens the "Locate ISO media volume" window:
Click "Browse Local," which opens the file browser.
Choose ISO file (in my case, I'm using debian-12.11.0-amd64-netinst.iso) and click Select, which returns me to the "New VM - Step 2" window.
Because the OS is not detected automatically, I uncheck the "Automatically detect from the installation media / source" checkbox, start typing the word "debian" in the text box above it, and select Debian 12 from the pop-up selection menu.
Click Forward.
Actual behavior:
Input Error - Error setting installer parameters. Validating install media '/run/user/1000/doc/c0a3c3fc/debian-12.11.0-amd64-netinst.iso' failed. Could not start storage pool: cannot open directory '/run/usr/1000/doc/c0a3c3fc': Permission denied.
Expected behavior: Create the VM and boot into the ISO that I selected in previous steps.
I copied the ISO file to my home directory but got the same result. Any other ideas?

That /run/user/1000/doc/... path suggests it's getting the .iso through the documents portal. So virt-manager is a flatpak? Sounds bad! Try using flatseal to give it direct access to all files.

This message is talking about permission denied, so I checked the file permissions, and I saw that the ISO file is owned by the qemu user:

No idea. Since the path is a /run/media one, what's the filesystem used there? Perhaps it's incompatible. Have you tried putting the iso in your home directory and going from there instead?
But perhaps it would work best if you just do what the documentation tells you not to do and rpm-ostree install virt-manager (and libvirt and friends, if needed)
Might check the file permissions then. Who owns the file? Does VMM have read permissions to the file? UUID 1000 is root, so it sounds like VMM is being run as your user, but the ISO is owned by root. You could try chown'ing that file to your user.

So, in this case, have you either installed libvirtd on the host^[Technically, you could also install libvirtd as a sysext.] (i.e. have you installed it with rpm-ostree) OR have you installed the QEMU extension as per its own instruction?
If neither, then you should at least do one of them and report back.
EDIT: While what's written above remains relevant beyond Bazzite, Bazzite's ujust scripts do provide handholds for a myriad of situations including this one:

Step 1: Install Virtual Machine Manager with ujust, i.e. invoke the ujust setup-virtualization command
I suppose the ujust way handles a bunch of gotchas you'd otherwise have to tackle yourself. And, thus, is most likely preferred over all other methods.
As a side note, please consider consulting Bazzite's excellent documentation first. We'll be more than happy to help out regardless, but I'm sure there are a bunch of gems you'll be missing out on otherwise.
I see a lot of misinformation about bluesky here, so I want to address a lot of the talking points against atproto/bluesky.
This is partially inspired by accounts like mastodon migration and feditips being really annoying about bluesky.
How Bluesky Works
I see a lot of people misunderstanding how it works. The network has three main parts: 1. A PDS -- This stands for Personal Data Server. These store information in records, like who you are following, your posts, who you are blocking and your images. 2. A relay -- These crawl PDSes and keep a copy of all the records on them. They give a "Firehose" of all the data on the network (that they crawled). 3. An AppView -- These index and work through the data from the firehose. All interactions are handled through these, meaning if someone follows me on bluesky, that app.bsky.graph.follow record will be crawled by the relay, and recieved by the AppView. bsky.app/ is an Appview. Appviews don't always have to use the relays, whtwnd.com/ connects to PDSes directly.
This is different to ActivityPub, where if I follow someone, my server sends that information directly to the other person's server.
Common misconceptions
An atproto relay is too expensive to run.
atproto.africa/ is a second full-network relay run by the blacksky team. We already have a second relay, and they're not even that expensive to run anymore, a lot of people run non-archival (meaning it doesn't backfill every post) relays for less than $40 a month.
There is no instances available except for bsky.social
bsky.social isn't actually an instance, its just the domain name assigned to users by default. This is explained here: app.wafrn.net/fediverse/post/f…
Wafrn has (opt-in) bluesky support, they act as a PDS and AppView, so if bluesky disappears tomorrow they can switch to the atproto.africa relay. (There is DID:PLC which is a problem, but I'll get to that later.)
You can't defederate bsky.social, this proves atproto is centralised!
While you could ignore records from a specific PDS on the App layer, its pretty pointless, since atproto is portable/content addressed, meaning a user could seamlessly move to another PDS. (AP does support moving, but its pretty seamful.)
Bluesky can censor people in turkey, this proves they're centralised!
Those posts weren't removed, people on third party bluesky apps in turkey could still see them. People in Turkey are automatically subscribed to a Moderation Service which hides those posts, as the government requires it. If a person unsubscribes, or uses a third party app/server the posts are still there.
Bluesky isn't decentralised as someone was banned for pointing out the head of T&S liked jailbait porn.
That person came back on a different PDS. They literally are still on bluesky because they joined a different server.
Bluesky went down due to a DDoS, this proves they are centralised!
The DDoS only crashed the Bluesky PDSes. People self hosting were fine.
Wafrn
Wafrn is a federated tumblr alternative. It started off as a tumblr clone, the dev added AP support, and eventually, Atproto support. Its a great example of how bluesky can be built on. If bluesky disappeared tomorrow, Wafrn could switch relays to atproto.africa, and still interact with people on other PDSes.
AppViewLite
appviewlite is a cool project I forgot to mention in the original post. It lets you self host an extremely lightweight Appview. You can crawl PDSes yourself, eliminating the need for a relay.
The main reason I made this post is because so many people are blindly anti-atproto, without fully understanding how it works and how it can be improved.
There is obviously problems with it, but it does a lot right. (There's a lot ActivityPub should do, like content addressing, DIDs and composable moderation).
I also think we could do with a better bridge. bridgy isn't really cutting it right now.
Note on did:plc, its the only centralised part of the network as of now, its essentially the underlying ID every account has. It is possible to use a did:web id instead, which is tied to a website name.

Very recently I had the great displeasure of arguing with FediTips which you may know for creating all kinds of informational content about the Fediverse and surrounding topics on their website, fedi.tips/.
That's great and all, if not for all the blatant disinformation regarding...literally any microblogging or even social media platform at all that isn't the Fediverse. Most notably, Bluesky.
FediTips, or rather the person behind it, Fedithings loves spreading plain disinformation regarding Bluesky and completely disregarding proven facts about Bluesky. Facts that are obvious by just reading one or two pages of the spec overview or the Wikipedia page on ATProto.
On the Fediverse, as I'm sure most of you will know, we use a sort of “message-passing” approach to sharing our posts around the network; We pass our posts directly to those which should see it, and we know who should see it because “oh hey, that guy followed me that one time!”. This is great! Everyone gets their posts no matter where they are, from completely different communities! (unless you deny them, we'll get to that)
These places, communities are often referred to as “Instances”. It's basically just the fancy term for communities though. But it's important to keep that in the back of your head for the rest of this.
Another important detail to keep in mind is how, on the Fediverse, your identity is usually tied to the community you chose. Your handle will quite literally look something like @[url=https://blog.cyrneko.eu/@/sunny@wonderful.garden]sunny@wonderful.garden[/url] (I don't think that's a real instance...I hope lol) and people will see you as being from that community
What about Bluesky? Oh boy, Completely different model.
Are there even instances?
To get this right out of the way: No. At least not how you think.
Whereas in the context of the Fediverse and all our communities we just sort of pass posts around directly, like people sending eachother letters, Bluesky went a different route
There is basically three important components:
Personal Data Servers – This is where the posts are
Relays – This is what gets the post from A to B
AppViews – Fancy speak for “the app the posts are in” / “The Bluesky app”
now, Personal Data Servers sort of explain themselves. It's where your posts are. If you or anyone else wants to go right to the source of those memes and shitposts, that's where they'll find them. Right open for everyone to see.
I'll refer to Personal Data Servers as just “PDS” from here on out.
Relays then take the posts from every single PDS they can possibly find and turns them into one long, always-updating list of all posts in the order they were posted.
And the AppView has the job of, well, letting you actually see those posts and interact with them; Make new posts, like stuff, share stuff. You know the drill

So with a Fediverse server, because you're passing posts directly between eachother as if they're letters, you need to hold on to the posts yourself so that you can, well...read them.
This means that you have a copy of not just your posts, but also the posts of everyone you follow and interact with regularly. Anyone that appears on the feed, basically
On Bluesky though? You don't keep the posts of others, only your own are stored. Well, your own and anyone you happen to share space with on the PDS.
What is “defederation”?
Now we're back to the whole “denying” thing that I hinted at earlier.
Due to the fact that posts are exchanged directly between people, there might be like superevilcommunity.com that does nothing but send you like hatred or something else you plain don't like. And blocking those communities is known as “defederation”
Now, this is a stark difference to how Bluesky fundamentally works.
Because everyone gets their posts from the same place, the Relay, one cannot really block the server a post comes from; You're not getting it from there anyways.
But even if they did filter out posts of that kind, there is another issue that makes it near impossible to have this sort of moderation tool.
Account Portability and Moderation
Bluesky had one arguably good reason to not use the same tech that the Fediverse uses: Fedi's account moving ability is not robust enough.
on the Fediverse, you can move your account to a different server by setting up an “alias” or “redirect”. This will make it so that anyone which follows you will automatically follow the new account, and anyone that searches for your old account will be redirected to the new one.
But for Bluesky, this wasn't enough. Posts weren't moved across, and you had to take up an entirely new identity on that new community. So for their new tech they were developing, they have a new identifier that isn't tied to a server. This is called a DID:PLC identifier.
The important thing here, just so I don't lose myself in technical details, is that even when you were previously at one given server it is trivial to move to another one, keeping this identity. Unlike a fediverse identity which is tied to the community it was on.
And this is why “defederation” doesn't work on Bluesky.
The Point
The things I've discussed here are basically a breakdown of what I talked about with Feditips.
Repeatedly, feditips refused to acknowledge the fact that Bluesky works differently, that it isn't even “federation” per-se, and eventually they pulled the “think of the minorities which are scared for their lives” card.
On a Trans person. They were talking to a trans person. That is one of the minorities which are scared for their life.
At that point, I stopped talking to them and advised them to shut the fuck up
Feditips does this on the regular. They frequently spread disinformation about Bluesky in an effort to feed their superiority complex for using a different social media site. They blame those which use Bluesky and see them as below themselves. You can see them posting about oh how much better the fediverse is on the regular.
Preaching to the choir, on the fediverse. my {preferred term} in christ, you don't need to preach to fediverse users how good the fediverse is. Especially when those which ACTUALLY moderate and run communities and those which have been here for MUCH LONGER THAN YOU all agree that no, the Fediverse is not this perfect safe haven. Far from it.
If you come to me screaming about how “think of the minorities” how come I don't see you taking action on transmasc erasure on fedi, or how people of color are treated on fedi? Those are marginalized too, and you say you care so much about safety which is why you redirect everyone there. Why can't they find a home here? Could it be that fedi is...not perfect? That the structure we've built over many years makes it at best uncomfortable for those people to be here?
No, it couldn't be. The fediverse is perfect and we are all superior for using it. What's that, Blacksky is a thing and they are running completely independent infrastructure for the black community? No no, you must be hallucinating. What is that, they in large parts feel much safer there? Nope. Can't be. The Fediverse is perfect.
expanding on blacksky a bit...Just to expand on this a little bit, everything I've seen from the blacksky community is genuinely amazing. They are building their community and keeping eachother safe, and it is working much better on there than anything I've seen on fedi. Seriously, these people make their own software completely independent from Bluesky PBLLC, and I've heard some rumours they even want to have their own AppView.
Wafrn is the main wafrn instance, a tumblr inspired federated social network that can connect with the fediverse. Follow your friends from mastodon, misskey, akkoma, and, if its your thing, threads too
PDSes and relays exist at the whim of Bluesky's corporate entity. Having all of the endpoints on the network controlled by a single agent is what makes Bluesky centralized. If Bluesky decided so, your server can be removed from their network and is functionally useless at that point. They decide who is and is not allowed to be a part of Bluesky.
For contrast, no such governing body exists with ActivityPub networks. Nobody can decide whether or not an instance should be removed from the network, they can only choose whether or not to federate with that instance. If you wanted to truly silence a Lemmy instance, for example, it would take the cooperation of all the major Lemmy admins to defederate, and is an entirely democratic process as a result.
EDIT: To clarify, ATProto is not what is centralized, "Bluesky" the platform utilizing ATProto, is what's centralized.
That's at a very different level. With dot social it's about a quarter of the active users on the fediverse, whereas bluesky is probably something like 95% centralized in practice. It seems to keep improving, but right now it's basically impossible to use without mostly interacting with bsky.
I know, but that wasn't my point. Getting cut off by a large server is a problem in any network. Yes, its bad that bluesky controls most of atproto, but its possible to use atproto without bluesky.
I have read it, and a lot of the problems have been addressed. Bluesky is still very early. There was an awkward period where lemmy was mostly lemmy.ml.

Plasma 6 is my favorite DE and i use KDE neon. The screen brightness adapts automatically to the windows i focus on, which is a good idea. But it does that the wrong way IMO. Dark windows are dimmed and bright windows are lit up. Why? Now i have both extremes switching back and forth all the time. Can we turn that the other way around or turn it off please?
I like that the screens hardware brightness setting is used now from the desktop. Great! But now i have no control over it anymore, since when i open a bright window, the brightness setting goes up too. I hate that at night.
Usually adjusting the brightness for me has one purpose: - bright room: max display brightness (day) - dark room: min display brightness (night)
...maybe something in between for transition. All the other features are nice to have but please only work on them when this main feature is secured.
If both monitors are messing with your sensors, you may just want to disable adaptive brightness and manually control it. They don't seem to have a workaround for it as of yet.

About a year ago, I heard someone mention that Outer Wilds had a VR mod. I do have a VR setup and am an experienced VR player, so I really could experience this game for the first time in VR.

I have only played the game in VR and loved it. The mod worked great for me a year or two ago so unless a patch went through it still should. Since you’re an experienced VR player I don’t think you’ll have too much issue with motion sickness. That being said it takes a lot to make me nauseous, so your results may vary. I think it’s an amazing way to get drawn into the world.
I picked up an old optiplex I'm trying to use as a NAS and do other things with. Initially I put Debian on there but felt like I was running into too many problems with things like power management, remot desktop, Docker, and mounting drives.
So I put Openmediavault on there and it's working now. But what are some of the best ways to get the most out of it?
Can I do most things through the browser interface, or should I remote into it to install things?
How easily can I mount it as a network drive to other computers? I still have a Windows PC so I'd like to access it from there too if possible.
And what's the best way to get other services running on it? I'm thinking of how it's possible to set up torrenting software and control it with a remote app from your phone. (For managing and sharing my distros, of course).

Next day I notice Prometheus is off line. Hmm, check everything out. Logs complaining of a missing prometheus.yml. On a hunch I recreated the above prometheus.yml and placed it back in /tmp/cadvisor/, restart Prometheus, and it fires right up no runs, no drips, no errors. Before I uploaded the new prometheus.yml, I notice that there is a directory now named prometheus.yml in /tmp/cadvisor/, which is empty. Deleted it.
Next day, same scenario. Missing prometheus.yml, directory called prometheus.yml in /tmp/cadvisor/. I thought well, if it's getting deleted, change the permissions, and continued my daily affairs.
Today, same exact scenario. So, wtf, over? Run some commands:

grep "delete" /var/log/syslog
I can see that the file IS being deleted, but I cannot seem to trace down what is deleting it. It's like there is a cron job that fires off every day at a certain time and deletes prometheus.yml, and in it's place, creates a directory called prometheus.yml effectively taking Prometheus offline. I have no such cron job tho.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Ancient wizardry? Any mystical incantations or tomes to consult?

I wouldn't get involved with someone deeply religious. I'd consider someone religious if they were sufficiently wishy-washy about it, though, e.g. people who are christian and believe in it at least enough to not call themselves atheists or agnostics but don't really DO anything christian.
That's potentially included in wishy-washy christianity. The important part is how they act on it. Though it certainly mystifies me how you can believe in that stuff and then act as if it doesn't, but that's kinda how people roll in my parts ...
I'm an atheist. I dated a woman once who believed in spirits. I think she experienced night terrors among other things and interpreted them as supernatural phenomena. It didn't cause problems then but I was a lot younger and I think now I'm less tolerant of that sort of thing. But who knows - I was crazy about her so maybe if I meet a woman I'm crazy about like that again then I'll tolerate anything.
More recently I've dated people who believe in a vague sort of life after death but never someone who practiced any religion. I think I would immediately rule out practicing religious people if I were going through a list (as when dating online) but if I met someone in person, really liked her, and then found out she was religious then I'm not sure what I would do. It would definitely be off-putting.
The problem for me isn't the lifestyle differences but rather my impression that religious people are missing the point about the basic nature of existence, when it really should be obvious. It makes me feel like I'm patronizing them, because to be frank I don't tend to think of them as my intellectual equals. (And I know that makes me sound like a pompous jerk.)
Yea I kinda get the same feeling. Although for a lot of people their religion does not preclude the acceptation/understanding of a physical world, it's a more of set of rites that they inherited and that's part of their identity. There's plenty of religious people who are scientists. For some, I imagine it may be difficult to reconcile.
I know that there are religious scientists and I think humans often compartmentalize beliefs in such a way that their belief about the supernatural doesn't affect their assessment of real-world situations. I'll even go further and say that often it seems like their belief affects their behavior much less than it logically ought to, with some (but not all) people who apparently sincerely believe in an all-seeing God and an afterlife still acting just like atheists in relevant situations. In this context, the fanatics are sometimes technically the more rational ones - I disagree with their premises, but their actions make sense if those premises are considered true.
I think people's behavior is determined much more by social conventions and the expectations of their community (in addition to pragmatic self-interest) than it is by logical reasoning. I'll risk being the preachy vegetarian by discussing people's attitudes towards eating meat. Most people sincerely believe that cruelty to animals is wrong, and also that factory farming (if not all killing) is cruel. Yet they eat meat. I even know some people who started eating meat again after being ethical vegetarians. Did they change their minds about whether or not harming animals is bad? No. If pressed, they feel guilty but they don't like to talk about it. The reason they're eating meat is because it's convenient and almost everyone expects them to, not because they reasoned from first principles. Likewise with religion - if no one else is giving everything away to the poor and everyone will think you're crazy if you do rather than praising you, you're not going to give everything away to the poor even if it would make sense to do so given what you believe.
Edit: Kidney donation is another example. I met a woman once who donated a kidney to a friend of her mother's. This person wasn't someone particularly dear to her, but she found out that he needed a kidney to live and she gave him hers. I think that what she did is commendable, but I still have both my kidneys. This is despite the fact that I sincerely believe that if, for example, I saw a drowning child then I would risk my life to save him. People would think I was a hero if I saved the child, or that I was a coward if I didn't try. Meanwhile almost everyone I know would think I went crazy if I donated a kidney to a stranger. My relatives would be extremely worried, and they would try to talk me out of it. I'm not going to do something difficult, painful, and (to an extent) dangerous when everyone I know would disapprove, even if in principle I think risking my life to save another's is a good thing to do.
I think your ideas here go into the right direction, but the confusing part for me is that many of the christians I know are so far below what you'd expect from a christian in these parts (which is already very little) - it's not that they don't give everything away to the poor, they're doing (as far as I can tell) nothing - they don't pray, they don't go to church, and they don't adhere to any of what the bible says they should do beyond maybe basic Golden Rule stuff. And it's not even like most families would make a big deal out of it if you left the faith or even became fully atheist. Most do pay the church tax, though, which is about 1% of your gross income.

I was using Reddit is fun and when the killed the API I came here but still occasionally checked the Reddit app. Can't remember what exactly put me over the edge but it was something about ads on the app I couldn't handle anyone.
Laptops are not generally designed to run like that with a closed lid. Heat dissipation is designed around the idea the laptop is open and some of it is through the keyboard surface. The lid closed would change that.
Systems can of course be setup to power off the display but for server/service uses open laptops may not be efficient space wise.
Having said that if the scenario is low power use the heat dissipation may not be a major issue. But if there is an unremovable battery i'd still be concerned about heat dissipation with the lid closed and even just the battery itself regardless of heat dissipiation.
I remember 2 years ago trying out Lemmy and getting a few laughs about beans and trying not to poop. I thought "this is ok, but I don't think this will ever replace Reddit in my day to day."
But I stuck with it and have come to love and appreciate Lemmy. The number of users has continued to grow and I feel like there's enough content here now that I never feel bored. Plus I feel like even small posts and comments get attention and we're not just screaming into the void.

As far as I understand it, the fall of the Soviet Union was preceded by at least a decade of economic struggle that was caused by a multitude of factors. Basically the only thing they had to export was oil and weapons and the only nations they could trade with were relatively poor. When their oil production cost kept rising, they just couldn't keep their exports high enough to import enough food and luxury goods to keep their population happy. This was a prime driver for unrest in regions that bordered the west, especially East Germany who of course got news of what life in West Germany was like. The Soviets were eventually forced to open the Berlin Wall and from there, there was nothing they could do to keep people from just leaving and fully collapsing the economy in the process. To this day, 35 years after the reunion, former East Germany is way behind the rest of the country even though on paper they have the same chances as everyone else, just because there has been a massive brain drain.
So overall, the collapse of the Soviet Union was less a failure of communism itself and more a failure to counteract their economic weaknesses as well as a result of their isolationism. The USA didn't win the Cold War because of the inherent superiority of capitalism but because the world drinks Coca Cola, wears jeans, watches Hollywood movies and works with IBM-compatible PCs. If the Soviet Union had pivoted their economy to those kinds of goods and had managed to export them to the west, they might have become what China is today.
So it all comes down to the question if alternate-history Germany manages to do that. With technology advancing slower overall and therefore becoming less of a factor in global markets, and at the same time keeping a lot of top scientists who in the real world left for the other superpowers, they could probably do it.
