My university is owned and operated by the US government, and I'm a govt employee. This means that all my research papers where I'm corresponding author are "US government work", and are in the public domain (according to US law). This means that I CAN'T grant scummy publishers the copyright for my work. Anyone can post it where ever they want since it's in the public domain.

This is an unexpectedly awesome perk of my job. I exist in the corner case of US copyright law that allows academic papers to be distributed as they should be.

God hears praise: this means that, through praise, the heart of the practitioner harmonises with the divine.

Valve draws a line in the sand.

This week, Valve draws a line in the sand and has officially defined what a next-gen PC controller looks like. We’ll talk about it. Plus, we’ve got news about Chiaki-ng’s latest update, and… how did Valve just move us closer to a third-party release of SteamOS? All this and more today!

Steam Deck on bsky

So it’s come to my attention that Steam Deck is now on Bluesky and that makes me happy. Now I don’t need to waste my time on trolling through the gore, spam, and bots that have infested Twitter’s rotting carcass.

I’m on bluesky @gardinerbryant and you can follow me over there. I’ve also got a Mastodon account @gardiner_bryant@mastodon.online.

I wish Valve would post to Mastodon but I’ll have to settle for Bluesky.

Chiaki-ng gets new update

Chiaki-ng—the nifty PlayStation in-home streaming app for Steam Deck and other PCs—just had a new update with some major improvements.

Version 1.9.2 was released on December 3rd and it included:

  • HDR support for MacOS and Windows
  • Increased stability of motion controls.
  • Native Webview for obtaining PSN tokens that make logging in through SteamOS game mode easier
  • Custom resolution setting options

And many other updates. I’ve been following the development of Chiaki since the early days of my Steam Deck coverage and I’m quite pleased with how it’s come along. You can find a link to get started with Chiaki-ng in the description!

Have you used Chiaki-ng? Let me know your thoughts on the software in the comments. And while you’re why not like that smash button? It’s the best way to tell YouTube you want to see more videos just like this. And if you missed the beard and mustache and you’re happy to see them making their return, get subscribed. And now, back to the news!

SDHQ’s Game Awards

So two weeks ago, we had Noah from Steam Deck HQ on our podcast Off The Console and we were talking about The Game Awards. Well, it looks like SDHQ and my friend Hi-Tech Lo-Life are working on their own (prerecorded) Steam Deck Game Awards.

It will be a pre-recorded show featuring games that run well on the Steam Deck. No word yet on categories, but that should be revealed as we approach the release date!

Look for their video coming towards the end of the month!

Very exciting stuff!

Deals of the Week

Now it’s time for the Deals of the Week, the segment where we highlight the bundles and sales that will help you grow you library of games!

This week, we’ve got two items to mention:

Humble’s Disney Bundle

First up is the Disney Classics Black Friday Bundle. With this bundle, you get 17 games for just $10. This bundle comes with

  • Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Verified)
  • Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (Playable)
  • Lego Indiana Jones (Playable)
  • Lego Indiana Jones 2 (Verified)
  • Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Verified)
  • The Curse of Monkey Island (ProtonDB Platinum)
  • The Secret of Monkey Islands: Special Edition (Playable)
  • Monkey island 2: Special Edition (Playable)
  • Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb (Playable)
  • Star Wars: Empire At War (Playable)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (Playable)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Replublic (Playable)
  • Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (ProtonDB Gold)
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy: (Gold)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Gold)
  • Republic Commando (Playable)
  • And Star Wars Rebelling (ProtonDB Silver)

GOG’s DRM-free version of Warcraft I & II

Now, if you missed the drama, apparently Blizzard has demanded that GOG remove Warcraft I and Warcraft II from sale. it’s speculated that this is because there are Battle.net remasters of both games exclusively on Battle.net… and why would someone buy a DRM-laden version of the games when there’s a good version over on GOG?

So both Warcraft titles are going to be de-listed from GOG on December 13th. What’s really obnoxious about this is that GOG recently included these titles in their Preservation Program—where GOG (read: not the publisher or the original developers)—are going to keep these old games alive and well on modern systems indefinitely. Even if they get de-listed from their store.

So this will be the first test of that resiliency.

However, GOG is offering the DRM-free bundle with both Warcraft I and II at a discount: $2 off by using the code “MakeWarcraftLiveForever”

Once the game is de-listed, anyone who still owns the game will be able to download it. So if you want a DRM-free copy of these games, you can use the link in the description and pick up the bundle!

SteamOS Branding Guidelines

So Valve has just updated their branding guidelines and this is really exciting. These new guidelines define relatively strict rules about how the SteamOS badge is to be displayed on hardware packaging.

Valve provides two logos, one in the “Positive” color scheme and the other in an “Inverse” scheme. The colors of these two logo variants are provided in RGB, CMYK, and Pantone colors.

They’ve also got minimum clearance space around the SteamOS badge and a minimum height for this logo in both pixels and millimeters for print materials.

Valve’s taking the branding of SteamOS as seriously as any other branding, and why shouldn’t they? While SteamOS has been around for over a decade at this point, the fact that they’ve made significant inroads in the hearts and minds of PC gamers everywhere says this is a basically a new category for them.

Now, what are these logos actually for? They’ll be emblazoned on product packaging for Valve’s hardware partners. For example, Valve says:

Partners/manufacturers will ship harewre with a Steam image in the form provided and / or developed in close collaboration with Valve.

I did notice a few typos in the guidelines including the word “the” here, and the same subheading for both of these sections.

But in that same document, we get to another juicy section. What does Steam Compatible actually mean?

Steam Compatible means that the non-Valve input peripherals work with Steam on PCs by meeting some criteria set by Valve.

Personally, I’ve been waiting for something like this to hit. Essentially, these guidelines lay out what it means to be Next Gen PC controller. And I’m here for it.

For the basics, a third party Steam Controller must have:

  • Dedicated Steam button
  • Dedicated Quick Access Menu button
  • View and Menu buttons with glyphs that match Steam Deck’s
  • A, B, X, and Y in a layout that matches the Steam Deck
  • And at least two re-bindable rear buttons (but there can be more)

However, there are two other features that are incredibly important to note:

  • Gyroscopic controls
  • Capacitive Touch Sensing Thumbsticks

This means that the Hori Steampad qualifies as “Steam Compatible” as it exceeds the minimum specs here with touch sensitive sticks and extra auxiliary buttons.

While I find it rather disappointing that Valve’s not requiring controllers to have at least one trackpad, I kinda get it. Trackpads can add a whole extra set of constraints to a hardware product and these are for third-party Steam Controllers, essentially. Presumably that will either ship with “Powered by SteamOS” devices or as standalone controllers.

But it’s nice to see Valve drawing a line in the sand… having an opinion and setting a minimum spec. They’re in the position to do just that and now, hopefully, they’ll release a game that shows everyone exactly what that specification can do.

\
Overall, despite having fewer stories than I normally do, we’ve seen another great week of Steam Deck and Linux gaming news.

I want to thank my members on Patreon and on YouTube for making this show a reality. If you’d to see your name listed over here, you can use the links below to make a monthly contribution below. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you on Monday.

Funko just used their AI against Itch and took them offline!

So, Itch.io went down for hours this morning--despite the fact their servers were still online. It wasn't a DDOS attack, it wasn't a malicious actor. No, it was an AI from Funko. Yes, the purveyor useless vinyl tchotchkes managed to take down the entirety of Itch.io for hours by siccing their AI "Brand Guardian" against the indie game publisher's site.

We'll dive into what actually happened in this video!

He has an entire Reddit dedicated to him. Something needs to happen to this guy.

Sacrificial child rape and murders, intimidating tens of thousands of people or more with 5g and microwave by clicking buttons on his phone and acting like an obnoxious, intimidating hot shot when they feel jolts of pain and convulsion. Then they're forced to go out and slave away for his riches and ego.

He has less than zero value in this world, he has extremely negative value. Don't let him smooth talk you, intimidate you, reassure you or talk "reason" into you. There is absolutely NOTHING reasonable about him. Hold fast with determination and keep coming back. Don't let up. He must be stopped at any cost.

Don't believe a word he says, or any of his southern (un)reason.

When all else fails, he might actually encourage you at your efforts. This is another deception effort. See past this too.

Theguywithallthetools reshared this.

The suspect was able to evade police by carrying extra clothes to change into, use e-bikes to escape into Central Park, he used a fake ID to book a room at a hostel and Greyhound bus tickets, wore masks in areas he knew there would be cameras, etc.

This is an organised person who thought and meticulously planned out his actions.

The person the police have found allegedly had on his person:
- a gun
- a silencer
- a 3 page handwritten manifesto
- the same fake ID he used to book the rooms

...
Why was he still carrying these things?
- you expect us to believe that the same person who went to those lengths NOT to be caught is going to be carrying around what amounts to a handwritten note declaring his guilt?

It's 2024.. who hand writes a manifesto?
- this guy has a masters of engineering, and you think he's handwriting his manifesto?
- you think anyone who has completed a masters is going to be able to keep their word count down to 3 pages??
- I've read numerous manifestos written by people who have engaged in political acts of violence - not one of them was under 10 pages, most were 20+

The manifesto uses stats from a 2007 AP story about the life expectancy ranking of the USA compared to the rest of the world
- there were stats from 2022 he could have quoted that prove his point better, but he used old stats? There's a recent Lancet study that show his point even more than the 2022 article, and he didn't use that either??
- again, he has a masters degree.. it's not like he doesn't know the importance of research based evidence or how to get it (and by the time you do a masters, this shit is baked into your personality tbh)

...
There were a number of organised efforts to inundate the tip lines with false reports about sightings of this guy
- but police followed up this specific report ('he looks like the guy, he's at McDonalds eating a burger") quickly enough to intercept him before he finished his meal, out of the possible 10s of thousands (maybe 100s of thousands) of fake tips they were getting?
- as organised as he is about getting away, he goes and sits in a McDonalds to eat?

...
The cops absolutely HAVE to find someone to charge. Not only are they worried this is going to kick off something, but CEOs are worried (and calling their friends in High Places to demand this guy be found). And they have to do it quickly.

I don't think this is the guy.

I also don't think that they care that this isn't the guy.

I am super curious to see the outcome of this, though.. there's a LOT of talk about jury nullification around this, and I can see laws being changes so that this either doesn't go before a jury, or so that nullification is taken off the books as an option for juries.

in reply to Misuse Case

@MisuseCase - he's also written a review of Kaczynski's manifesto on Good Reads.. so I'm 100% certain he was already on a list somewhere. All they had to do was look at the people they have data on for making these sorts of social media posts etc, and pick a white guy with dark eyes and strong eyebrows who looks like the pictures they have.

Investigating a crime isn't about solving it, it's about building a brief of evidence that will convict someone.

@JonChevreau

I've seen a lot of nuclear propaganda lately and it's pure bullshit

In a nutshell: CSIRO has found that building nuclear reactors in Australia would cost at least twice as much as renewable power and that it would take at least 15 years to build nuclear here.
\
This latest analysis is just another reason why nuclear reactors are too risky, too expensive and too little, too late for Australia. They won’t lower power bills or fill the urgent energy gap being left by coal exiting

in reply to mittimithai

@mittimithaiI feel I benefitted tremendously from Prozac when I was in my early 20's-30's and desperately depressed. Pretty sure I stopped "needing" them a while ago but they're very hard to go off. I tried weaning off several times in my life with disastrous results. However, over a year ago I started my slowest weaning process yet. I started skipping one every 10 days, then every 9 days, 8 days, etc. and now I'm on every other day. And I feel fine, quite good actually. If this keeps up I expect to be fully off by Summer or Fall. I suspect being post-menopausal helps even more than the very slow wean.

Will be nice to not be dependent on Prozac/Fluoxetine any more. It was $2.50 a capsule when I started in the late 1980's, which was obscenely expensive back then. Now it's generic and practically free. On the other hand, a year ago I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and my medication for that retails at $25,000 per dose, every 8 weeks. Insurance covers it, but I'll be dependent on it, or whatever other monoclonal antibody replaces it once I build a tolerance, for the rest of my life. Oh well!

incidentally, I started using squint and I find it a lot more ergonomic. It's just cljs syntax on top of plain js, so you lose immutability, and a few other things. However, the js it generates is almost 1:1 making it really easy to debug. Also, no need for interop as any js code just works. github.com/squint-cljs/squint

Also: I'm starting to really hate the "I don't condone violence, but..." stuff.

Brian Thompson condoned violence every day of his professional life. Actively sought out violence, hired consultants to come up with ever-more creative and quasi-legal ways to do violence.

This violence was indifferent, focused, unrestrained, and targeted the most vulnerable people in the country. Who were *HIS CUSTOMERS*, mind you.

But it was *systemic*, and Americans are used to systems killing them.
