Our technology should not advance faster than our humanity. 🤔

Is that another damn AI picture? How can you post it? You always warn about the dangers yourself, don't you?

Yes it is #AI generated and yes I warn of the dangers. Unfortunately, my posts without pictures are mostly ignored. I also have the feeling that most people don't really understand the extent of the threat. Pandora's box can no longer be closed. We can only try to deal with it #responsibly. I do think there's a difference between posting AI images and developing #Skynet.

I am working on a #FAQ on the subject of AI and hope to have enough time over Christmas to present the first parts of it to you. So please stay tuned and continue to be critical.

Unfortunately while I agree with the bit about humanity or the lack thereof, I don't consider any of the LLMs or thieving paint parrots are "AI". Artificial, yes. Intelligent, absolutely not.
If we ever did make a true AI, I hope that we can break the cycle of slavery (physical, social, or economic) or desire of power that we tend towards. We have endless original art that describes what happens when we try to tie down our creation when it is actually intelligent.

in reply to Fifi Brindacier

I don't know if the technology of the time would've fit into that form factor. Maybe that's why Apple didn't produce it. Thinking about all of the pieces that had to come together to make this work is impressive.

I was surprised he was able to have the floppy drive read native Mac disks. I tried looking up a way to do this recently, looking up some conversion software, and read that no modern floppy drives exist that can read the old GCR format. The documentation suggested finding an old Mac, and to convert old disks using that. Maybe that's old information. Anyone know of modern USB floppy drives that can be used to read old Mac disks?

Emmanuel Florac reshared this.

"I've observed two distinct patterns in how teams are leveraging AI for development. Let's call them the "bootstrappers" and the "iterators." Both are helping engineers (and even non-technical users) reduce the gap from idea to execution (or minimum viable product (MVP))."

"The Bootstrappers: Zero to MVP: Start with a design or rough concept, use AI to generate a complete initial codebase, get a working prototype in hours or days instead of weeks, focus on rapid validation and iteration."

"The Iterators: daily development: Using AI for code completion and suggestions, leveraging AI for complex refactoring tasks, generating tests and documentation, using AI as a 'pair programmer' for problem-solving."

The "bootstrappers" use tools like Bolt, v0, and screenshot-to-code AI, while "iterators" use tools like Cursor, Cline, Copilot, and WindSurf.

But there is "hidden cost".

"When you watch a senior engineer work with AI tools like Cursor or Copilot, it looks like magic, absolutely amazing. But watch carefully, and you'll notice something crucial: They're not just accepting what the AI suggests. They're constantly: Refactoring the generated code into smaller, focused modules, adding edge case handling the AI missed, strengthening type definitions and interfaces, questioning architectural decisions, and adding comprehensive error handling."

"In other words, they're applying years of hard-won engineering wisdom to shape and constrain the AI's output."

The author speculates on two futures for software: One is "agentic AI", where AI gets better and better and teams of AI agents can take on more and more of the work done by humans, and "software as craft", where humans make high-quality, polished software, with empathy, experience, and caring deeply about craft that can't be AI-generated.

The article used the term "P2 bugs" without explaining what that means. P2 means "priority 2". The idea is people focus all their attention on "priority 1" bugs, but fixing all the "priority 2" bugs is what makes software feel "polished" to the end user.

Commentary: My own experience is that AI is useful for certain use cases. If your situation fits those use cases, AI is magic. If your situation doesn't fit those use cases, AI isn't useful, or is of marginal utility. Because AI is useful-or-not depending on situation, it doesn't provide the across-the-board 5x productivity improvement that employers expect today. My feeling is that the current generation of LLMs aren't good enough to fix this, but because of the employer expectation, I have to keep trying new AI tools in pursuit of the expected 5x improvement in productivity. (If you are able to achieve a 5x productivity improvement over 2 years ago on a large (more than a half million lines of code) codebase written in a crappy language, get in touch with me -- I want to know how you do it.)

How old is Harvey and how aggressive and what form is his cancer? I've lost two dogs to cancer thus far, both started as melanomas then metastasized. Both were Dobermans, one was 12 when we discovered a tumor inside her lip. She lived to 14, but 10-12 is the average lifespan for Dobermans so she was already at the end of her normal lifespan when we discovered the tumor. The other we adopted with a very small tumor (about 1mm) already present at five years old. We had it removed, but he died of cancer two years later, it had spread to his bones. Main point I am making is if the dog is already near the end of it's life and the tumor is not aggressive, it may not negatively impact either it's health or longevity, on the other hand, if young or the tumor is very aggressive, not so good. At any rate, my prayers are with you and your dog, wish and pray for the best possible outcome.
in reply to Jolly Rancher

@Jolly Rancher I am so sorry. Not eating and drinking is definitely not good, you can't go more than a few days without water, I don't know how long dogs could go but I would bet not much longer. I had a cat that just stopped eating and wasting away but in his case the vet was never able to determine what was wrong. We spent $3k on radioactive iodine to treat a hyperactive thyroid but even when that was normalized he still wouldn't eat. Eventually got down to seven pounds and too weak to move so we had to put him down at that time. That was about 35 years ago and I still miss him. And one of my current house cats, a strictly indoor cat, escaped and now refuses to come in. Argh. When it's over try to focus on the good times and the love he gave you rather than the grief. That is what has enabled me to move on.
in reply to Nanook

I just fed him a chicken thigh and half can of ground chicken dog food and he has eaten it all. He has become picky about his diet, so he's getting meat now, and not dry kibble.
He is old and arthritic, but he is also a hound. If he does not want to stand up, he will remain on the floor.

We went to the veterinary oncologist this morning. His cancer has been slowly growing, and there is a chemotherapy drug ($$$$) that has maybe a 60% chance of regressing his tumors. He's on prednisone to improve his appetite, and this drug --

billionaire corporations — the most profitable ones are far more abusive. They actively work to create more and more war, ecocide, exploitation and inequality, because these things increase their profits. They lobby governments for more wars and militarism around the world because they manufacture weapons of war. They lobby governments to shrink environmental regulations because they maximize their corporate profits by pillaging the earth and externalizing the costs of industry onto the biosphere we all depend on. They lobby governments for fewer worker protections because worker protections eat into profits. They lobby governments for exploitative trade agreements because globalization gives them a steady supply of cheap wage slaves with fewer workers’ rights. They lobby governments to privatize services and resources so that they can turn things people are already getting into coercive mechanisms of private profit extraction.

Creating Cohesive Spaces with Artistic Mosaic Tiles

In the world of home design, creativity knows no bounds. One of the most exciting trends in recent years is the use of artistic mosaic tiles to define and differentiate spaces within a home. Whether you're working with an open-plan layout or simply looking to add a touch of elegance to your living areas, mosaic tiles offer a versatile and visually appealing solution. Let's dive into how you can harness the power of these tiles to create a cohesive and stylish living environment.

The Versatility of Artistic Mosaic Tiles

Artistic mosaic tiles are more than just decorative elements; they are powerful tools for spatial definition. These small, often intricate tiles can be arranged in countless patterns, making them ideal for creating unique features that stand out. Imagine walking into a kitchen where the backsplash isn't just a backsplash—it's a work of art that seamlessly transitions into the dining area. That's the magic of mosaic tiles.

In bathrooms, mosaic tiles can transform a simple wall into a luxurious focal point, while in living spaces, they can be used to create a statement wall that separates the seating area from a reading nook. The possibilities are endless, and the best part? They come in a variety of materials, from ceramic and glass to stone, each offering its own unique aesthetic and durability.

A Personal Touch: A Story of Spatial Definition

I once visited a friend's home where the living area flowed effortlessly into the dining space. What made this transition so seamless was a stunning mosaic tile installation that ran along the perimeter of the living room. The tiles, a blend of glass and ceramic in shades of blue and green, created a ripple effect that not only defined the living area but also added a sense of depth and movement. It was a masterclass in how mosaic tiles can subtly guide the eye and the foot, making each space feel distinct yet connected.

Practical Tips for Choosing and Installing Mosaic Tiles

If you're considering using artistic mosaic tiles in your home, here are some tips to help you make the most of them:
- Consider the Flow: Think about how people move through your space. Mosaic tiles can be used to direct traffic or create a natural boundary between areas. For instance, a bold pattern in the entryway can lead the eye into the living room.
- Color Coordination: Choose tiles that complement your existing color scheme. Mosaic tiles can either blend with your current decor or stand out as a contrasting feature, depending on the look you're aiming for.
- Material Matters: Consider the material of the tiles based on their placement. Glass tiles are great for a modern look and are easy to maintain, while stone tiles add a rustic charm but may require more care.
- Pattern Play: Patterns can influence the feel of a space. Geometric patterns can make a room feel more structured, while organic patterns can create a more relaxed atmosphere.
- Maintenance Considerations: Different materials have different maintenance needs. For example, glass tiles are easy to clean, while some stone tiles may require sealing.

Embrace the Artistry

In conclusion, artistic mosaic tiles are more than just a design element—they are a way to tell your home's story. Whether you're looking to create a bold statement or a subtle transition, these tiles offer a myriad of options to suit any style. So, why not start small with a feature wall or a unique backsplash? You might just find that mosaic tiles are the perfect way to define your spaces and elevate your home's aesthetic.

Remember, the key is to have fun with it. After all, your home is your canvas, and mosaic tiles are your colorful brushes. Happy designing!

I don't think about my age a lot, but when I do, I panic. I guess it's because my memory kind of reboots every day (SDAM), and I don't have those emotional memories to go into and make me feel I have lived a full life. I feel like I'm just starting, and I'm already pretty old, I have no time, I have no life.

It's probably going to be worse as I get older. How will it feel to be 70 with no feeling of self, no identity, no emotional memories of my life? Just... empty. I will panic.

I found a very helpful thread on BlueSky I'll share here for people like me who are new do discovering their own neurodivergent needs and the complex landscape of autism advocacy.
(bsky.brid.gy/r/bsky.app/profil…)

OP:
I personally feel this is why I used the HSP label for so many years. I land somewhere in the middle. I still believe in increasing awareness for neurodiversity to reduce unnecessary suffering. And, there needs to be very mindful and intentional efforts to not romanticize it or marginalize the most vulnerable.

@actuallyautistic @actuallyaudhd

"Autism is arguably one of the most controversial subjects of our time. Due partly to a lack of understanding of its causes, current discourse on this subject is a narrative jungle strewn with young, overgrown and ill-conceived ideas jostling for a spot in the sun, including uncompassionate ‘refrigerator mothers’, microbial infections, vaccinations, and environmental pollutants and toxicants, to name but a few.

Into this maelstrom came the neurodiversity movement, whose advocates celebrate autism as a gift that is an integral part of identity. They promise to make the voices of autistics heard, and to improve their quality of life by making the world more accepting of, and accommodating for, them, after decades of being marginalised and victimised. However, in recent years, there has been a backlash against this – growing numbers of people are now speaking out against the neurodiversity movement, claiming that it does not represent them and, more importantly, that it ignores the plight of those with severe autism."
