Two months after Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated North Carolina, thousands of survivors remain in dire need of assistance. Frustration boiled over during a recent Buncombe County Commissioners meeting, where one resident warned, "We don't want to have an epidemic of people freezing to death." Another attendee echoed the community’s despair, stating, "I've never seen the lack of public officials coming out and actually trying to help."

While federal agencies and mainstream narratives suggest recovery is underway, the reality on the ground tells a starkly different story. One resident explained, “FEMA money runs out, and all the help I’ve seen has come from people out of state.” Even more troubling, a FEMA employee admitted, “Every delay means another night that a child sleeps in a car.”

Determined to uncover the truth, our team visited FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers across North Carolina. In Polk County, we met Rosanne Walters, the facility’s manager, who asserted survivors were receiving assistance “in various ways.” However, the scene told another story entirely: employees standing idle in a nearly empty center, while survivors waited for the aid they desperately needed.

So far I've been very impressed with the #Windows11 -> #LinuxMint migration. Haven't really delved too much into getting some of my legacy apps to work other than just trying to get things reinstalled and things set back up properly.

My biggest challenge now is jockeying data around on all my direct-attached storage drives so I can re-partition them and re-format them. They were all encrypted with #BitLocker under #Windows. So now the decision I need to make is...
A) Set up #Cryptomator volumes? Benefit is it's cross-platform and the data is readable across Windows, Mac, and Linux and the encrypted data can be stored on any medium.
B) Set up #LUKS volumes. Benefit is it's built-in to Linux requiring no additional software. But not supported outside of Linux.
C) Set up #VeraCrypt volumes/ whole disk? Benefit is it's been battle-tested. And supports #FDE like BitLocker.

I'm kinda leaning towards Cryptomator if for no other reason than the data can be stored on any media. But, I like the fact I can set up FDE with VeraCrypt which certainly helps with CIA triad (confidentiality, integrity, availability). FDE I think increases availability since it's pretty much impossible to fuck with one of the encrypted files.

On the other hand, I already use Cryptomator to create personal secure volumes on public cloud storage providers....

Ugh!

Imagine how quickly a properly run country would deport foreign criminals - yet in broken Britain, we’re ridiculously arguing about the ethics of doing so.

Honestly speaking, I don’t care about their right to a family life or whatever other nonsense. They sacrificed that when they raped, murdered or assaulted a British citizen.

If it were up to me, this lot would be out of the country before any poisonous left wing lawyers have a chance to go in to bat for them.

I don’t want them in British prisons. Learning yoga or how to lay bricks. I don’t care about their rehabilitation. It is NOT our problem.

Send them back to where they came from. They can rot in some African prison or wherever else - agreements can be reached with these countries. We’ll take our prisoners back, and they can have theirs. I suspect it may be a one-sided exchange…

Britain is a soft touch. We need to get real and put the safety of the British people above the human rights of foreign offenders.

A mass deportation scheme for these criminals is required.

#Programming tip: technical debt is job security. Build software that works and needs to be maintained. The bosses want software quickly, give it to them. This means cutting some corners and building up some technical debt. Let them know, they actually like to hear that you are moving fast. They don't want a perfectly polished diamond in a month, they want something that kinda works in a week. And they'll need to keep you around to pay down that debt.

We bought a toaster/convection/air fryer oven a couple years ago, not only does it not have AI, it doesn't even have digital circuits, it's all knobs and springs and switches. When the timer ends, there is a little actual metal bell that gets struck, instead of those insidious beeping piezoelectric speakers. Anyways, it's glorious and I don't have to update the fucking WiFi password, or set the clock when the power goes out or anything.

Question for trackball users: Should I get a trackball mouse? I need a mouse that doesn't move.

I have never used one. I'm willing to deal with the learning curve.

Most of the time I'm a keyboard-only user, but I like to work on photography from time to time. Photo processing software is, of course, very mouse intensive.

My desk is very small and the mouse with its mouse-pad don't fit very well, specially when a notepad, a cellphone or camera is part of the workflow and it's on the desk too, next to the mouse. But, on the other hand, a trackball doesn't move.

I'm trying to do my own research, but the paid reviews are getting in my way, and I can't always differentiate between a genuine user reporting the benefits of a trackball or a "review".

Trackball users, will it solve the "my desk is too small" problem?

It's seeding vocabulary and knowledge into the public such that the casual follower can't reason with this knowledge and thus cannot meaningfully challenge anyone. You see this on Twitter all the time. Accounts who can't challenge things on the merits of the argument will start name calling and acting basically unreasonable because they are absolutely convinced in the belief, but without enough knowledge to actually have meaningful discourse. It contributes to the division because outside observers will then pick sides. Either they side w/ the "crazy" person or w/ mainstream, never themselves questioning anything.

Unfortunately, the number of critical thinkers anywhere is going to be very small.

If phages are REAL, that IMPLIES that the biochemistry works (at least a a bacterial level).

I haven't fully been keeping up, but based on whatever I see in my various feeds...

The no virus crew wants the entire question to only be focused on whether viruses exist or not, but they don't want to talk about the implications of having no viruses.

That would mean that:

  • vaccines are zero benefit and all risk (everything about vaccines should be criminal)
  • the response to the pandemic was fraudulent and criminal in many many ways.

But instead they focus on all the holes surrounding the "discovery" of viruses. However, currently they are looking (through Jamie Andrews) at almost all of biochemistry, including DNA, sequencing and other techniques.

I suspect that they will focus on a few small pieces and again miss the bigger picture implications from that. Part of that could just be a response to @jjcouey starting to look at all the Bad Biology. It almost feels like they want to get ahead of it and have their people ready with retorts, but we'll see.

How Cryptocurrency Turns to Cash in Russian Banks

A financial firm registered in Canada has emerged as the payment processor for dozens of Russian cryptocurrency exchanges and websites hawking cybercrime services aimed at Russian-speaking customers, new research finds. Meanwhile, an investigation into the Vancouver street address used by this company shows it is home to dozens of foreign currency dealers, money transfer businesses, and cryptocurrency exchanges — none of which are physically located there.

krebsonsecurity.com/2024/12/ho…

teasers:

The 122 services targeted in Sanders’ research include some of the more prominent businesses advertising on the cybercrime forums today, such as:

-abuse-friendly or “bulletproof” hosting providers like anonvm[.]wtf, and PQHosting;
-sites selling aged email, financial, or social media accounts, such as verif[.]work and kopeechka[.]store;
-anonymity or “proxy” providers like crazyrdp[.]com and rdp[.]monster;
-anonymous SMS services, including anonsim[.]net and smsboss[.]pro.

According to Sanders, all 122 of the services he tested are processing transactions through a company called Cryptomus, which says it is a cryptocurrency payments platform based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Cryptomus’ website says its parent firm — Xeltox Enterprises Ltd. (formerly certa-pay[.]com) — is registered as a money service business (MSB) with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC).

Sanders said the payment data he gathered also shows that at least 56 cryptocurrency exchanges are currently using Cryptomus to process transactions, including financial entities with names like casher[.]su, grumbot[.]com, flymoney[.]biz, obama[.]ru and swop[.]is.

These platforms are built for Russian speakers, and they each advertise the ability to anonymously swap one form of cryptocurrency for another. They also allow the exchange of cryptocurrency for cash in accounts at some of Russia’s largest banks — nearly all of which are currently sanctioned by the United States and other western nations.

OMG Investigates FEMA – Part 3: O’Keefe Sneaks Into Emergency FEMA Locations, Exposes Empty Disaster Recovery Center

Source: t.me/okeefemedia/1023

“We don't want to have an epidemic of people freezing to death,” a resident declared during the Buncombe County Commissioners meeting, voicing frustration over the slow pace of disaster relief in North Carolina. Another resident added, “I've never seen the lack of public officials coming out and actually trying to help,” reflecting the sentiment of abandonment felt by many in the community.

Despite the mainstream media’s narrative of assistance, a resident revealed, “FEMA money runs out, and all the help I’ve seen has come from people out of state.” One FEMA employee even admitted, “Every delay means another night that a child sleeps in a car.”

@OKeefeMedia investigated these concerns, visiting FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers across the state to uncover the reality of Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Once inside the Disaster Recovery Center in Polk County, OMG met Rosanne Walters, the manager of the facility. Walters claimed survivors were receiving assistance there “in various ways,” but the state of the center told a different story. James O’Keefe reported that the site was nearly empty, with employees “standing around,” while survivors continued to struggle.

During the investigation, OMG encountered resistance from security at FEMA facilities, who insisted all press footage be reviewed by “their people.” Security’s hesitancy of press coverage only fueled suspicions of a cover-up, with an OMG Journalist adding “It makes it look like you’re hiding something.”

PeerTube, the Open-Source YouTube in the Fediverse, Now Has Official Mobile Apps

The image shows two smartphone screens displaying the PeerTube video platform. The screen on the left shows a cartoon of a cat and dog, along with a video titled "What is PeerTube?" in French and English. The background of the cartoon is a simple green field under a bright, partly cloudy sky. The screen on the right shows a live video of two middle-aged men, possibly hosts of a talk show, engaging in conversation. The background features a blurred bookshelf indicating they are in a library or a study setting. On the left-hand side, subtle details include the number of likes and dislikes, showing that user interaction exists for the content. On the right-hand side, a 'Watch Later' option suggests a feature to manage the viewing experience. The number of views and upload times help to understand the popularity and age of the video.
PeerTube is an open-source and decentralized video network, with videos hosted across thousands of interconnected servers, from large YouTube-like public servers to smaller ones set up by individual creators.

You can browse and watch videos from over a thousand different servers—the app calls them “platforms” in some places—and you don’t need an account with any of them to use the mobile app. You can also favourite videos, subscribe to channels, follow your favourite creators (regardless of the server they’re hosted on), create custom playlists, and add videos to a watch list.

Created in 2017 by a single developer, PeerTube is now maintained by the French non-profit Framasoft.

PeerTube uses the same ActivityPub protocol as Mastodon, Meta’s Threads, PixelFed, and other services, meaning you have a bunch of servers to play videos from.

I can imagine that funding for a video based platform is going to be a bigger challenge than for text based posts. I also post my own videos to a Peertube server.

"Now the fact that those findings have been concealed may bring more trouble to Olson-Kennedy.

A report in Just the News explains that “the walls are closing in on perhaps the most influential youth gender-transition physician in America after she admitted hiding the results of her federally funded study that failed to find mental health improvements from so-called gender affirming care, contradicting her prior characterization of the study’s population to explain the results.”

A lawsuit with Olson-Kennedy as a defendant has been brought by UCLA student Kaya Clementine Breen, who detransitioned and reportedly can back her claims by using Olson-Kennedy’s own case notes about her.

Breen lawyer Jordan Campbell told Just the News that those notes cannot be shared yet.

But multiple Republican senators just last week joined House Oversight Committee Republicans to demand the NIH turn over information on Olson-Kennedy’s study and the results.

The report explained that decision on the study “helped create a false medical consensus on puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgical interventions for gender-confused youth.”"

@djsumdog @KuteboiCoder prefacing this, that I do believe in a divine spark being the foundation of consciousness.

That said, I have long surmised that if you simply build a large enough network of synapses (or synapse emulators, as in the case of neural networks e.g.) that intelligence arises from this mess as a natural consequence of the network passing some size.

I don't have much scientific basis for this belief but it is at least intuitive, and roughly maps onto the varying brain sizes and intelligences that arise in lower animals.

"Consciousness" or sophisticated thought though, I believe to be the distinguishing factor between humanity and lower animals, and to be divine, not merely a natural, physical consequence of the size of a neural network in our skulls.

Y'all, we need to talk about when GenAI use is worse than just doing a job "terribly".

Lots of my job involves reading insurance questionnaires. And they're long and tedious and talk about things like they're absolutes but we all know there's way more nuance than there's room for in a couple of box checks.

But! There's comments fields! And for me and my team, those comments fields are *gold*. They give us a sense of how the organization really thinks about security. We can usually tell if the questions were answered by the legal team, or the IT leadership, or the security leadership, because each of those roles uses different language and jargon. And this tells us about the organization! We love reading y'all's comments.

And then there's something I saw recently where the comments were... off. It almost felt like someone was copy/pasting from a cyber security basics textbook. In response to every "do you implement this control" question, there was a response of "Yes! We implement that control! It is a really important control because <insert explanation of what that controls does here>".

I mentioned this to my teammates and their immediate response? GenAI. That's not how any professional adjacent to this field writes. You don't need to explain to your insurance carrier what those controls are. We know. That's why we're asking about them in the questionnaire!

And, I get it. These questionnaires are long and confusing. You don't know what the "right" answer looks like. We get it. But GenAI isn't going to help. It's not going to give an accurate answer of what's in your organization's environment. It's not going to give us a sense of your competency. It absolutely isn't going to impress us, because now we think that you have no idea how cyber security works.

If you're using GenAI to get over writer's block, that's great! But you still need to edit that content into shape. If you're worried about language barrier issues and think GenAI will help you get your point across better because its English is better? Just write in your native language, we have translation tools. If you're worried that your answer isn't "good enough"? Look, the questionnaire is the start of a conversation. If you're the sort of company that does calls with underwriters, we can talk through whatever issues you think you have. But we need to have an honest exchange.

Just, please, PLEASE, don't blindly use GenAI to fill out your questionnaires.

Oh, I see:

“When we execute a source code, Python compiles it into a byte code. Compilation is a translation step, and the byte code is a low-level platform-independent representation of source code. Note that the Python byte code is not binary machine code (e.g., instructions for an Intel chip).”

In other words, Python demeans the term compilation.

Also, after it “compiles” that apparently it throws it into the PVM (Python Virtual Machine)?

It’s as if Python was designed to be the least efficient language imaginable!

And the benchmarks corroborate that.

Now, we get to wake up at the butt crack of dawn every morning to get into a "virtual queue" so that we can actually ride the rides we have paid Disney to allow us to schedule as "lightning lanes".

Sound confusing? I think it's purposefully so.

So lets straighten it out.

Step one: By the Lightning Lane. This is the most advertised step and the easiest of course.

Step two: Wake up in the middle of the night so that you get firstish pick of scheduling your ride. You gotta do this on what feels like a random night prior to your trip so I guess add that to you're fun trip itinerary now

Step three: Every day at Didney Worl you must wake up at 7 AM. Even though you are dog tired from walking / running around a hot park all day. Then, you have to schedule your virtual queue. If you don't do this you will straight up just not get to ride the ride you paid for.

Step four: Wait for the people who run the virtual queue to call your number. This can happen at any time on the day that you have scheduled it. After they call your number, you have a limited time to show up at the ride before they skip you and you have to go back to step three. Hopefully you're somewhat nearby when they call your name or you'll have a wonderful time navigating the parks at high speed under duress.

Step five: Stand in line. This is the part where you finally wonder if it was all worth it. Because you're still going to be standing in line for probably 20 minutes. But, I guess that beats standing in line for 90 minutes.

#DidneyWorl is the best.
