Different hardware did work right away. The trusty Dell Optiplex to the rescue.
Installed a dual-NIC SuperMicro low profile ethernet card in a Dell Optiplex 3010, installed OPNsense, and it got an IP from the Internet Service Provider.
I did have to check the setting to prefer IPv4 even if IPv6 is available because the ISP doesn't fully support IPv6 and requests were sometimes resolving quickly and sometimes taking a long time. Selecting to prefer IPv4 in the OPNsense settings fixed that issue.
Having problems getting my OPNsense router to talk with the internet service provider. I get a DHCP address from them to my laptop and desktop, but not to the router. Support guy recommended replacing the hardware and try with another router.
@Tom Grzybow fair. It’s an interesting space to inhabit. The specs are ancient and the technology is archaic (I haven’t used asn.1 since the nineties; it still sucks). But it does a pretty good job of solving a real problem; it’s just not been taken up as much.
But portable, provably authentic documents are pretty great. I can think of improvements, but by and large the system works well enough to solve a bunch of problems. I hope we can attract some customers and grow it out.
The EU was smart to invest in it and build trust roots at a country level. We don’t have that on this side of the pond; we’re stuck with Adobe as the de facto trust list.

The power has been out all day. I have a small generator but I've been running the car and using its inverter to power up the Internet access gear, since we need it for the business. Didn't wanna listen to the generator. I run the car for a while to charge up the battery, then turn it off for a while, then run it for a bit. Works, but annoying. Since this sort of thing happens frequently here, I have all the components needed for communications plugged into one power strip. That way I can easily unplug the whole thing and plug it into an extension cord running to the car or a generator. No cell coverage here, so all communications go through the Internet.

You know how many sites will not except a password that long? You wanna know how many won't even accept the maximum length that's supported by Proton Pass, which from what I've seen is 64? Yeah, me neither. I can already name more than a couple of them offhand, and I learned that the irritating way. One of them is the patient portal for my doctor's office. I'm sorry, but when I already have a program installed on my computer that's sufficient to generate passwords that, realistically, cannot possibly be learned through brute force either now or at any point in the foreseeable future, if ever—I would like to be allowed to use such a tool, even at its limit as if somehow that's asking too much, especially in the interest of protecting something as important as my own medical records.

I don't know enough about computer hardware to say with assurance but I am very confident that modern hardware is being created in such a way that modern software does not run acceptably on anything older. This is a deliberate cash grab and everyone involved should be drowned.

I believe that but I've also heard that old software runs worse in many cases on new hardware which would imply that they're doing what is essentially killing backwards compatibility but for PCs.
