@Jarasy The worst case of targetting civilians was Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan had completely run out of fuel so could no longer defend itself in any way. You are constantly told that the bombs were needed to end the war but Russia had already started to take over Japan from the north and Japan had made it clear that they wished to surrender to the US rather than Russia but the sticking point was that they wished to retain their Emporer. The US chose two non military target because they wanted to have good examples of before and after photos whereas all the military targets were already destroyed and cities like Tokyo were already flattened. So two civilian targets (I do accept there were storage camps etc. but do not accept that they were significant military targets) were chosen for the worst two attrocities ever. Japan was then allowed to surrender and keep their Emporer. Dresden was similar in that it was also an experiment rather than an act of war but with incendaries. The ring of fire took the oxygen out of the center of the city. The city was fully working again in a couple of days but the entire population had been suffocated. Personally I do not see such acts as somehow better than Hamas or Mandella etc..

Contrary to the public story about what ended the war, the bombs made no difference to Japan at that point. One of their generals famously said it made no difference if it was one bomb or a thousand bombs.
MacArthur and the US were insisting on unconditional surrender without giving in on that small point of saving the emporer. I had also thought that the US had finally agreed about the emporer but after reading more I believe that it was an unpublicized back door agreement so the US could claim it was unconditional while Japan got to save the emporer. I read that the actual process of returning him to his position was quietly handled by MacArthur himself some months later and billed as a spontaneous act of kindness.

Israel has continued to demolish homes in the Tulkarm refugee camp as the number of displaced Palestinians rises to more than 40,000 since the military operation in the occupied West Bank began in January.

This Open Source Mobile Comm project appears to be an open source impl of a 3G network's backend software. But they're not using the standard 3GPP protocols, they're using their own home-grown stuff instead.
Looks like a toy, using SQLite3 as its HLR storage. Real 3G/4G networks use LDAP, lots of OpenLDAP in particular because nothing else scales enough, efficiently enough.
Admittedly, I haven't been paid to touch an HLR since 2001 (once upon a time I obtained the probably not coveted: "Acatel Certified HLR Technician" title).
Back then, they were still running Sybase for their SQL implementation! Yikes!

IIRC Osmocom could at least handle GSM? The Sybase vintage stuff I was paid to work on was all mostly still the AMPS vintage.
That employer's SS7 packet sniffer, was bought used and ran DOS and still cost $40,000!
So, "toy" or not, I don't think the commercial market really had much to offer as a viable alternative way back when? I do remember some other company demoed a fancier SS7 packet sniffer running on a Tadpole (Solaris era)! The laptop alone probably cost over $20k! I don't remember what they wanted to charge for their software, but six figures before decimal places seems familiar? Certainly in alignment with the obscenely expensive prices they paid for some other things (I think NetCool licenses cost five figures back then and were a far cry from even something as rudimentary as nagios).
That company (which eventually got a third round of funding from Marconi if memory serves) thought the Tadpole/Solaris SS7 packet sniffer upgrade was too expensive and passed on the snazzy GUI and what would have been (by comparison) a merciful way to grep and sed through output without having to write something to a floppy disk from DOS sniffer and load it onto a better system for more sophisticated analysis as we had been doing, if the need arose.

As panels are getting cheap, the support structure becomes a serious part of the cost (and even of the embedded energy). You need a lot more steel and foundations for such elevated panels.
Not sure about now, but not too long ago parking lots were money-losing PR projects(look us being green), while the field ones were serious.
Once we have enough PV to saturate summer peaks, every next panel produces less useful power. So lower cost is critical

meh. Fields of monoculture crops have very little biodiversity and certainly aren't natural. While wild grassland under solar is pretty good. And if the field was growing corn or similar for a biofuel, then the solar covered field will create about 6 times more energy in the same area. Alternatively, there are quite a lot of crops that do very well when partially shared. Yields of strawberry under PV is better than conventional practices.
Rooftop solar, on just HALF of the world's roofs, would produce MORE electricity than is used today from ALL sources. And would uplift all people, strengthen all people, and drive a permanent economic boom.

In California, where it's often quite dry, we are putting solar farms over some fields to conserve water. In some cases, crops are being planted alongside solar panels. There are many benefits from this dual use, and many applications. Of course we are a massive state "... the size of the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Kosovo and Czech Republic combined.” I imagine that in smaller countries it would be unpleasant to see solar farms everywhere you look.
All the nations have transmission lines. Running across acres and acres, across manufacturing zones, beside residential areas, from powerplant to city to harbour.

Galaxy brain: large enough parking lots for a solar farm shouldn’t exist in cities and we should abolish car dependence and build walabke cities to be green.
Also infra for over solar covering car ports is 100x more expensive than some cheap panels in an field.
However there are agrovoltaic systems where spread out panels are elevated above certain crops. They protect fruit yields from excess sun leading to needing excessive watering according to studies.
But yes the urban areas are seeeeriously missed. Did you know you can install them on walls and fencing. They cool better.
Uhm cover both the fields and the car parks. Covering the fields is good for the plants (including the crops! higher yield!), insects and small animals on the fields.
Sometimes placing solar panels on farms actually helps. You may need less irrigation and the optimal amount of sunlight is different for various crops. This may, of course, depend on your climate: it is not "one size fits all."
here in California we have giant fires going on where they just put in controversial grass field solar, which is another point for car parks/parking lots getting solar first. It's closer to where people are, requiring less transmission distance and less vulnerable to wildland cycles of fire & flood.
I've actually read somewhere that covering fields with solar panels instead of mono-cultured farm land actually helps nature, especially animals that can use it to live under and find food (that would potentially not grow on farm land or be polluted with pesticides)
Also seeing as we need to focus on getting rid of cars first I kinda feel like it's a waste of resources to try to make parking cars feel better by adding shadow. 👀
Just get rid of the car parks, put down plants and the solar panels on top. Maybe even some nice parks and sitting areas under it.
Although there is something to be said for putting solar on already-used land if there is a requirement for power there, that car park is probably half the problem - people really need to think about alternative means of travel, and if they need to travel in the first place. Would much prefer it if every public building had solar panels on their rooves.
I like the idea of solar paving slabs durable enough to walk on and even cover roads.

Farmers have been willing to lease their land to solar companies because it’s guaranteed income and they don’t have to wrestle with year to year weather struggles, yields, labor, etc. It’s guaranteed income and usually higher income than from their traditional farming efforts.
some crops benefit from the shade actually. Some farmers who aren't yet bought out by big corpos need the extra dosh from hosting solar to stay independent too.
Why not just get rid of car parks entirely and make public transit freely accessible?
Solar panels actually improve the yields of raspberries and grapes, because those crops are sensitive to too much direct sunlight. I'm sure there are other crops that benefit, I just haven't seen any papers that talk about them.

You've seen drivers right? And what they do to the bollards and barriers in parking lots? If I'm the power company, I'm not putting expensive generating infrastructure where people are going to be constantly parking their cars right next to the pillars holding it up.

Intelligent use of solar panels *can* actually enhance the productivity of agricultural land. Turns out a lot of plants and animals evolved in environments that are occasionally shaded. Who knew? 🤷♀️
And car parks large enough to support a solar farm shouldn't exist to begin with. Put housing and mixed-use buildings there with panels on the roof, instead of panels over an endless plane of tarmac.

Actually, there have been experiments with elevated solar panels over the fields and some crops grow better with partial sun than with full sun full time. It also shields the crop from some things, including helping to shield the crop from extreme wind events and some kinds of bird damage. I would rather see the solar panels on buildings and car parks and bridges and protecting rivers from excessive operation, but that doesn't mean you can't use them over your fields as well when there's an advantage in that.

The destruction doesn't need to be particularly explosive when contending with most PCB level designs. At least, not that anyone would consider explosive who has contended with "srs" explosives. Does a popped capacitor seem explosive? It can make a loud noise! "Magic smoke" moments and hardware becoming inoperative are usually more than sufficient. IIRC, マクロスプラス「makurosu purasu」"Macross Plus" had a scene of some similar level circuit board destruction in animated form in the early to mid 1990s.
Thankfully, I haven't worked anywhere that had a "grandfathered" Halon fire presuppression system in operation since 2006! Even before that I had worked at places which had at least transitioned to non-lethal FM200 (not as volumetrically dense than Halon for storage, but won't kill you if deployed). The risks for some sorts of things are nontrivial. You never know what poor SOB might be in a server room after all, and do you want their blood on your hands if Halon got deployed because of some overly aggressive "detonation"?
There used to be the informal parlance: "It's the US Army, not the THEM Army" and every soul was counted and depended on and the goal was to save as many lives as possible.
However, last I checked, Halon was still used in military systems probably with more cavalier abandon than that past employer of mine with their "grandfathered" system circa 2006? With the requisite casualty considerations presumably still being calculated by some higher up brass.

My dad was drafted back when conscription was still a thing and the mercenary industrial complex already predated upon me and my friends when we were minors. None of us enlisted, no matter what evil deeds they had already made us do.
To wit, the only person from where we grew up who became military (or maybe cop?) adjacent was the son of a cocaine dealer, just to give an indication of how corrupt such realms had become and what might entice someone to become an authority figure in such circles.
