'A Walk on Roseisle Beach', watercolour, 30 x 30 cm. This is a long beach close to where we live; one of the few sandy ones as most are pebbles. It is beautiful on a summer's day and just inland is Roseisle Forest, which is great for walking. The beach was defended during WW2 and the bunkers and obstacles are still there, as can be seen here. The people here are my daughter, her boyfriend and her little dog Alfie! It takes some bravery to walk down a street looking like that, though my experience of Berlin is that there are plenty of places where no-one would give it a second look. I love that city.
I don't know if it's so different in other big cities, but there are also districts where people might open their windows and complain if you're talking in front of their house during day. When my oldest daughter was very small and we went for the first time to Zehlendorf with her, first thing she said getting out the car was "Why is here no dog poo?"
Where we live, not very far from Oranienstraße, we don't have extrovert people like that every day, but it's mostly not a scandal if someone's strange. But I think there are more crazy people today than used to be, like the lady walking topless the other day. And more poor people living on the street now as well.
When I was first time in London in the 80s I felt uncomfortable about the contrast of very poor and very rich at the same places. I didn't know from Berlin at that time. But some places here are now pretty much like that.

@Y A you should get yourself there when you can. It's a wonderful city. I have visited it many times from right back in 1973 when I crossed from East to West Berlin and visited the SU's influence. It was fascinating then an is still. My friends lived in Kreuzberg when I first knew them and I went many times. Wow! What a great place. I met a German man who was working in a book shop where I was looking for a particular book, he spoke English as well as - better than - I did. Oh, and the museums and galleries. Go there, Alfred.
Many people in my street used to be quite... what would be a polite word in English? ...about the shouting party-tourists all night. That was a big issue for a while. But now I hope, traveling and tourism along with all the other freedoms will soon be possible again. Hope to see you here 😀
I've heard Berlin is really different from other european cities, surely because much german free minds settled over there, at the time (1989), because military probation time wasn't required. Maybe that contributed to its autonomous spirit and large sympathic aura.
Sure, before 1989 many boys who wanted to avoid military services settled over to West-Berlin. That created a certain atmosphere. Another good thing was that it was completely locked, which made it something like the biggest village of the world. I always went out alone, because I would either meet people I knew or get to know people I didn't know yet.
But I think in the last decades the city has become very much like any other city is. Rents went up, driving creative people out, leaving some kind of expensive tourist-disneyland that's more a cliche of the former reputation, and some real poverty as well (West-Berlin Punk-poverty was usually more ghetto-show than real need).
Yeah but at least the google building project has been stopped by the neighborhood and the people who didn't want it around ! Hope is still somewhere in Berlin

Logic dictates they won't do #1, so my prediction is after they crash a few billion dollar jets and kill a thousand or so passengers, they will nearly go under and then be acquired by another airline that has business sense.
