I can only speak to 1984 the book and my decades as an American citizen by birth.

The idea of reading 1984 in school was to teach us the signs of dystopia so we'd steer around them.

However, at the time wealthy Americans had already been waging continuous war on the middle class for decades while politicians corrupted the US Federal Government in order to provide a direct path for the wealthy to purchase taxpayer funded corporate welfare at an incredible value of several pennies for each US taxpayer dollar dispersed.

Now we are a weak nation of cowards and wage slaves in thrall to sociopaths, criminals, and drug addicts.

Hey Installer Devs - an installer feature -- copy another system's install?

Please let me know if there is already an accepted way to do this.

Early in the install process, you'd have a field to type a hostname of a local machine that you'd like to install like. The installer would download an "Install facts" file and install the new machine like the model machine.

The "install facts" file is created at install time. it contains things like timezone, language, percentage of disk space for each partition (to handle disk space of differing sizes) Optional files selected, username/password for root and for first user - anything needed to make the install a two click operation.

Note that this would be a full new install - not a clone of a machine that has been in use for a while.

For Debian there's Preseed, for Arch there's archinstall, for a Fedora/RHEL there's Kickstart, for Alpine there's setup scripts, for distros with fully manual installs, you could just write a script?

Automating your install is something any sysadmin and mainly any distro developer will quickly reach towards, so it is something almost certain to exist.

Though, if I understand you, you'd want that to be "sourced" from an existing system, yes? I can see the use of that...

My son just sent wife and me a text. He went to the business office at his college and asked them to give him the total amount that has been paid on his account over the whole four years. He said that they had never been asked to do that before and it took them 30 minutes to figure out how to do it. He sent us the number, it was rather huge. Then he said "This was all you people. Thank you very much. I'm very grateful."

Yemen, graveyard of invaders and Trump gives green light for ‘final solution’ in Gaza thewallwillfall.org/2025/05/08…

🇺🇲

@N.Morgan Good data is always good but this data is fake, at least with respect to polio, we know there have been quite a few polio deaths in Africa, so the 1-in-1trillion is surely made up bullshit. I'm not a big advocate of vaccines in general, I do think more often than not their risk outweighs their benefits, but the polio numbers just do not remotely jive with reality and the fact that they don't takes away from credibility for the remaining data.
in reply to Nanook

It isn't so one dimensional anyway.
The latest polio outbreaks in poor countries were from vaccine derived strains of virus.
It goes like this:
The Sabin vax is live virus with a couple mutations that render it weak. Give vax to child in a naive population. It replicates, the child develops immunity, but shits out live virus particles.
Billions of them. Evolution runs a million times faster in viruses - a few of the particles have mutations which reverse the Sabin weakness.
Other people get infected. Most of them quietly develop immunity, but polio is wildly contagious.
The ones with the un-weak mutation propagate better and you have an outbreak...

the new Pope is being called Leo XIV?

Pope Leo X was the one who excommunicated Martin Luther - and then died months later supposedly of pneumonia.

This is what Martin Luther had to say about the papacy back then in his 1545 work Against the Roman Papacy, an Institution of the Devil

“I am not lying to you. Whoever has been in Rome knows that conditions are unfortunately worse there than anyone can say or believe. When the last Lateran council was to be concluded in Rome under Pope Leo, among other articles it was decreed that one must believe the soul to be immortal. From this one may gather that they make eternal life an object of sheer mockery and contempt. In this way they confess that it is a common belief among them that there is no eternal life, but that they now wish to proclaim this by means of a bull. More remarkable yet, in the same bull they decided that a cardinal should not keep as many boys in the future. However, Pope Leo commanded that this be deleted; otherwise it would have been spread throughout the whole world how openly and shamelessly the pope and the cardinals in Rome practice sodomy. I do not wish to mention the pope, but since the knaves will not repent, but condemn the gospel, blaspheme and revile God’s word, and excuse their vices, they, in turn, will have to take a whiff of their own terrible filth. This vice is so prevalent among them that recently a pope caused his own death by means of this sin and vice.In fact, he died on the spot. All right now, you popes, cardinals, papists, spiritual lords, keep on persecuting God’s word and defending your doctrine and your churches!

_No pope, cardinal, bishop, doctor, priest, monk, or nun will condemn such an obviously disgraceful life; rather they laugh about it, excuse it, and gloss over it. They incite kings, princes, country, and people to defend such knaves with life and property, with land and people, and faithfully to protect them so that such vices might not be repented of and reformed, but rather strengthened, sanctioned, and approved. Now you are to hazard blood, body, and life just for the sake of Saddling your neck and conscience with this. I could easily mention more examples of such abominations, but it is too shameful; I fear that our German soil would have to tremble before it. But if an impudent popish ass should come along and dispute this, he will find me ready to do him battle, and it will be quite a battle!”

also: Pope Leo X died in 1521. Is he the one who "caused his own death by sin and vice"?

BTW, Leo X was a Medici (a banking family)...

Friedrich Engels: With the seizing of the means of production by society, production of commodities is done away with, and, simultaneously, the mastery of the product over the producer. Anarchy in social production is replaced by systematic, definite organization. wordsmith.social/protestation/…

Quotes

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.

  • Muammar Gaddafi: We will not surrender. We will defeat them by any means. We are ready for the fight, whether it will be a short or a long one. We will be victorious in the end. This assault is by a bunch of fascists who will end up in the dustbin of history.
  • Democritus: By convention sweet is sweet, bitter is bitter, hot is hot, cold is cold, color is color; but in truth there are only atoms and the void.
  • Democritus: We know nothing accurately in reality, but (only) as it changes according to the bodily condition, and the constitution of those things that flow upon (the body) and impinge upon it.

  • Samuel P. Huntington: The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion (to which few members of other civilizations were converted) but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.
  • Marjori Palmer: One of the most morale-damaging aspects of the inflation was the "sack of Germany" that occurred at the height of the (1923) inflation. Anyone who possessed dollars or sterling was king in Germany. A few American dollars would allow a man to live like a millionaire. Foreigners swarmed into the country, buying up family treasures, estates, jewelry and art works at unbelievable low prices.
  • Lionel Robbins: It was the most colossal thing of its kind in history: and next probably to the Great War itself, it must bear responsibility for many of the political and economic difficulties of our generation. It destroyed the wealth of the more solid elements of German society: and left behind a moral and economic disequilibrium, a breeding ground for the disasters which have followed. Hitler is the foster child of the inflation.
  • Lenin: There is no trace of utopianism in Marx, in the sense that he made up or invented a 'new' society. No, he studied the birth of the new society out of the old, and the forms of transition from the latter to the former, as a natural-historical process. He examined the actual experience of a proletarian mass movement and tried to draw practical lessons from it.
  • Che Guevara: Many will call me an adventurer - and that I am, only one of a different sort: one of those who risks his skin to prove his platitudes.
  • Democritus: The first principles of the universe are atoms and empty space; everything else is merely thought to exist.
  • Bertolt Brecht: Lenin is enshrined In the large heart of the working class.
