When I was very young, three or four, before I learned to write, I’d search out empty pages in my father’s thin, hardbound ledgers and out-of-date diaries, and scribble from left to right. I would sit them on an angled louvre, the humid Brisbane air drifting in, and play at writing.

I think I derive some pleasure in the friction of pencil on paper itself, surfing the feint-ruled lines. There is electricity – lightning, back through memoir – that links to my early tactile sense of the world. Perhaps, eventually, we’ll be able to see AI for what it is and take solace in human traces – an interest in process and practice will deepen. This is happening already, but there’ll be more focus on the open studio or the singular, lifelong accumulation of skill and intelligence of any artist, musician or writer – something AI lacks. A painter slowly perfecting a subtle un-mimicable line via studies or works-in-progress.

I’m writing this sentence in pencil. I write most of my first drafts by hand; it’s something I’ve done for nearly 15 years. What prompted me was a fancy exercise book I was once given as a gift: almost waxy, caramel-coloured paper with fine, milky feint-ruled lines. It whispered to be pencilled on.

I’m happy to escape the computer and travel lightly – in a cafe, gallery or wilderness.

I can hand-write faster, too – well, probably slower than I can type, but it’s a fast-blur sort of writing; being left-handed, this scribbly sentence vanishes below my hand and wrist, out of mind. I concentrate on a calm centre where the graphite sizzles against the paper, resisting the urge to edit.

Japanese pencils and notebooks, German sharpeners. Sun-bitten Australian hands.

My habit is quaint, I know, and there are downsides – deciphering my scribbly handwriting is like trying to communicate with the dead. And I’m accumulating piles of smudgy notebooks and stubs of pencils that I can’t bring myself to throw away. But I’m beginning to think all this is more important than I first anticipated.

A writer friend recently posted that after updating her version of Microsoft Word, it invited itself to collaborate on her novel in progress, offering to work on 2,000 words at a time. Instead she workshopped her panic with fellow writers who helped her unplug the tech. But this is where we’re at. The question blooms by the day – how are we to know if any creative text, novel, essay, poem or short story is AI assisted, or even authored? In time, will it be impossible to tell?

At present, the best we seem to have is an honesty system where authors put their hand up if they’ve used AI. I recently submitted some poems to an Australian literary journal – something I’ve been doing for more than a couple of decades – but for the first time I noticed a checkbox with the line “I haven’t used AI” next to it. It’s easy to tick, but how are we to trust that work is genuine, especially given several well-documented cases of plagiarism in Australian literature?

This has me realise – for those who value non-AI-generated literature, the focus will shift to this: how do we prove we didn’t use AI? My first thought is: practice with a ‘c’. It’s what sets us aside from AI-generated content, right? Artists’ practice.

As someone working in the literary realm with a pencil, I struggle to trust AI as anything but a numb wrecker – docile, tonally one-dimensional, static, fattened with stolen literature. I almost liken it to an empty hoax, but it has nothing on Ern Malley.

In 1943, conservative poets Harold Stewart and James McAuley invented a poet called Ernest Lalor Malley, made ornate mock-wacky poems and presented them to the young editor of the modernist magazine Angry Penguins. We also know that the hoax worked very well – Ern was the centrepiece of a 1944 Angry Penguins edition, with Malley-inspired cover art by Sidney Nolan, no less. But the hoaxers were a little too good – the poems became some of the strangest and best and most influential in Australian literary history.

This is not to suggest we need another hoax, only to compare this complex richness against the generative-AI world which is so much less knotty or interesting – there is no cascading human archive in it. Can AI fragilely misstep like Stewart and McAuley? It was the charm and vulnerability and improvisational flair in their – let’s face it – beautiful failure. In AI, are we to find this allure or scribbly imaginative interstice?

doctors say it's a slipped disc in my lower back. it wouldn't have gotten this bad if it didn't happen just before travel, i was walking around all day ignoring the pain until it became impossible to walk :blobcatmeltcry: at least i got to enjoy most of my holiday. they put me on gabapentin now but im wary because the last meds i was put on only made me worse

unironically what i feel helps the most is tylenol and tiger balm.

in reply to 恵真

@恵真 If it's the same as Tylenol then it must be pretty weak opioids. The last time I received opioids was for a colonoscopy and they gave me a milligram of fentynal. The doctor asked me if I was feeling any discomfort, I told him I could not even feel the table I was lying on, and that was the truth, it had completely numbed any tactile sensation below my neck. I think a tad overkill for the procedure.
in reply to Nanook

yea that sounds a bit insane i dont think they would give that here. i tried oxycontin before but i didnt feel anything, and i think oxy is pretty strong isnt it? i tried tramadol and it gave me a seizure. codeine just makes me constipated. honestly for a colonoscopy i would prefer to be completely knocked out so overkill would be good :blobcatmelt:
tylenol has always worked rly well for pain for me especially combine with ibuprofen. i got so sick after being prescribed naproxen recently though that i dont ever wanna take an nsaid again

if you live in western europe and say that you can't have kids because it's "too expensive":

very likely your spending is through the roof. likely because you "have to" live in an expensive city (all the cosmopolitan culture you don't get to see because you don't have money and are too tired!) and do constant consumption of garbage for dopamine kicks. spend less on few things of good quality that bring joy, like good coffee.

probably you also got brainwashed into not grabbing every last penny of state money (extracted from you via taxation) because "others need it more". even when you are entitled by laws, which you follow by the letter when they take freedom away from others and yourself.

if YOU don't take the money, it goes into bombing people around the globe to "defend democracy" and implementing things to make your own society even MORE shit.

that's the alternative.

the money doesn't go into helping the poor. certainly not into helping the poor of your own society like old people who worked their whole life or raised a family.

first thing the new german government talked about was axing unemployment benefits to save a few pennies while implementing limitless military spending.

Dear User...

An Open Letter

... I guess this is goodbye. You've threatened to leave so many times now that I am personally amazed that I am the one who have to take this last step, but someone have to at this point. I can't count the number of times you've said you'd stop using the thing I make on my free time, for free, for you to use, unless I catered directly to your needs.

You've told me that I am not pulling my weight. That the things I make, on my free time, for free, for you to use, are not up to snuff - they don't meet the requirements you have set. The standards you dictate are not level with my results. When I look behind me, all I see in term of dead weight is you.

Over and over, you tell me I should manage my time and effort better - that me "reinventing the wheel" or "doing another useless feature" is pointless compared to the critical needs you have. The time and effort it takes for me to dig through your frivolous, made up bug reports, emails, posts on social media etc, is time that very realistically is taken from the thing I make on my free time, for free, for you to use. I keep wondering why you think this saves me time somehow?

On the other hand I am amazed by your passion - you're still here. Even though you keep telling me or talking to others about me, that I am incompetent, unskilled and idiotic, you still use the thing I make on my free time, for free, for you to use. I'd be pleased if it weren't for the fact that my competence also hinges on my belief in it to realize those projects - and let's be frank, you are not helping in that regard.

That is a thing I envy in you, your confidence in your own skills. Especially since you've never shown them. You can happily use the thing I make, on my free time, for free, for you to use, then angrily tell me how bad it is - but when I ask you to help, even in such a small way as explain exactly whats wrong with it so I can fix it, you refuse. You don't have time to contribute, to take part and it makes me think why I don't emulate that confidence in regards to my own time, I guess that is what this is in a way.

If there is something I will miss from this, what we had, it is that. Your sense of self-worth. What else can you call it when you angrily tell me that your contribution to this thing I make, on my own free time, for free, for you to use, is your mere presence? Your usage of that thing. That you sauntered in and consumed the thing I make, is somehow payment enough yet I can never quite remember when I agreed to be your servant, sales clerk or support channel?

We know each other though, don't we? For example I know that you at this point is writing some scathing reply about my skin and how its too thin. That a prerequisite for me spending my own free time, for free, doing something you use, was some sort of rhino like hide that could take the abuse. Had I know that my own interests came with a volley of buckshot at random intervals I may have reconsidered them, taken up macramé instead. I wonder if rhino's have these same issues? Hunters telling their felled carcass to not be so damn thin skinned as if that, and not the bullets, was the core reason why the rhino just laid down and quit.

I also know that you may claim that you where JUST on the cusp of becoming a contributor after all this time and me driving you away is what made you change your mind. I wish I could believe that. I also wish I could believe that even if, against all evidence, you would become part of the community of the thing I make on my free time, for free, for you to use, you would somehow be better at that than you where a consumer of the creation but I fear I can't be that naive. You've taken any childlike naivete I may have had a long time ago.

Please... please don't though. Please don't look up "ableism" on wikipedia and try to fling it in my face. That the interest I have, that I have done my entire life and therefor cultivated into a skill somehow behooves me to invest it into your needs. Fancy words except creative ways telling me I am shit have never been your thing.

"... then you'll lose me!" You've said over and over as an emotional extortion when I don't spring to action at any whim and fancy you may have -
I guess this letter is me answering that question, after all these years:

"Would you leaving be a loss?"

"No"

Few could have predicted it, but Shiloh Hendrix delivered one of the greatest blows against cancel culture, yet. Hendrix was made famous by a mob of leftists baying for blood after she was filmed uttering ‘the N word’ to a man filming her in a public park.

This is now a ritual of modern America, where a White person who is filmed by a person of colour violating one of the taboos of anti-racism then suffers an onslaught of cancellation, doxxing, and intimidation. Only this time, White Americans in their thousands decided to draw a line in the sand, establishing a GiveSendGo fundraiser for Shiloh that raised over $700,000.

Shiloh’s fundraiser was an excellent way to flip the script on cancel culture. Talk is cheap, and offering rhetorical support for someone like Shiloh as tens of thousands are actively working to ruin her life only means so much. The next time someone rushes to whip out their phone and film an uppity White person to feed to the digital mob, they will know there is the possibility they are about to make that detestable racist a millionaire.

The response may seem surprising, but it came shortly after the shocking spectacle of over half a million dollars being raised for Karmelo Anthony, a Black teen who stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf to death over a trivial dispute. Seeing the outpouring of support from the Black community seems to have been the final straw for many White people.

Nein, muss man nicht. Man muss sehen, was passiert. Und was passiert, ist ethnische Säuberung in Echtzeit. Live in 4K.
