got the black ceiling tiles in place as well as black walls to place behind the outer walls. the level is basically in a black box and the skybox is pure black so it works really well.
so it turns out this only mostly works. the player can still clip the camera inside of the walls if they want to and see things they shouldn't. so there are two solutions:
1) heavily restrict player camera or use fixed camera angles 2) paint black on the opposite side of the walls
i'm going with number 2 for now and it seems to mostly work. there are a couple seams i have to add additional black walls to at odd corners here and there but that's not a huge issue.
the engine's camera doesn't respect collision, but i haven't messed around with camera settings too much so maybe there is a way to force that i'm not seeing yet.
for my actual game instead of this test project, i'm thinking of three different camera modes. first person, fixed cameras, or a top-down camera you can simply rotate/zoom. that way the player won't be able to move the camera in ways that appear glitchy.
first person is the last thing i want to go with because i just kind of wanted to make it third person like classic survival horror games. if i go with the top down perspective, it'll likely be something like what you see in the photo in the previous post. from that angle and distance, but with the ability to rotate the camera around freely. in fact, maybe i'll just do that for this test project too. i love the idea of having a super dynamic camera but it does come with its own share of issues.
Cameras don't usually respect collision, that's usually a separate component. Unreal has that built-in, I think it's called a camera boom, but no other engine's I've looked into.

Gaza Resistance Targets Soldiers and Settlements, Yemen Targets Ben Gurion Airport
The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced on Tuesday that it launched a salvo of Q20 rockets targeting the Zionist settlements of Nir Yitzhak and Mivtahim.
The rockets were fired from an area close to where military vehicles were operating north of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Al-Qassam targets engineering equipment, armored units
On Saturday, June 28, al-Qassam announced its fighters had targeted four Zionist engineering excavators with al-Yassin 105 shells in the town of Aabasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis, setting the equipment ablaze.
The group confirmed that its fighters observed casualties among occupation soldiers at the site and noted that Zionist helicopters landed in the area to evacuate the wounded.
In a separate operation, the al-Qassam fighters also targeted a Merkava tank and a D9 military bulldozer with powerful roadside explosive devices in the same area.
Meanwhile, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement, announced two operations on Tuesday against Zionist gatherings and vehicles in Khan Younis.
In a joint operation with al-Qassam, the al-Quds fighters shelled a Zionist military gathering east of Khuza’a, north of Khan Younis, using multiple mortar shells.
In another operation, the group reported detonating a shock-activated explosive device successfully targeting a military vehicle near Street 5, north of Khan Younis.

Hommes, femmes et même enfants juifs furent traînés dans les rues, matraqués à coups de matraque, frappés à coups de pied jusqu'à en briser les os, abattus à bout portant et violés ; certains furent tués par de simples civils ukrainiens transformés en monstres sanguinaires. Des femmes enceintes avaient le ventre ouvert. Des nourrissons étaient écrasés contre les murs. Des victimes étaient forcées de ramper nues dans les caniveaux, fouettées, humiliées et crachées dessus. Les personnes qui ont fait cela sont aujourd’hui des héros nationaux de l’ #Ukraine.
84 years ago, on June 30th, 1941, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists ignited one of the most savage pogroms in modern history against the Jews of Lvov. For three days, the city became a hellscape. Jewish men, women, and even children were dragged into the streets, bludgeoned with clubs, kicked until their bones shattered, shot point-blank, and raped; some to death by ordinary Ukrainian civilians turned bloodthirsty monsters. Pregnant women had their bellies sliced open. Infants were smashed against walls. Victims were forced to crawl naked through gutters while being whipped, humiliated, and spat on. The people who did this are national heroes of Ukraine today.
No surprises here—Zohran Mamdani’s lead has grown even larger. And the Democratic Party establishment is still losing their minds.
