A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵

An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 "blast-proof" windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.

Received an email threat that if I don't send $1290 in bitcoin, the "hacker" will reveal all my naughty activities.

Not sure who would care about any naughty activities I might have, if I had any.

The "hacker" included a password I used years and years ago, to prove he or she is legit. Problem is, I change my passwords every year, so any old password is useless now.

Stupid discount "hackers".

$1290? I'm insulted.

Shockingly Americans won’t pay patriotic premiums to starve. Buy American zeal melts faster than cheap plastic when tariffs jack up prices. Turns out 'economic patriotism' is easy to preach until your grocery bill needs heroism.

Only 17% would pay >10% extra for US goods, everyone else quietly buys what they can afford as politicians perform flag-waving kabuki.

But sure, blame consumers for choosing rent over abstract nationalism. 'Let them eat flags!' 🙄

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

In this conversation, former political prisoner and anarchist Eric King shares the emotional depth of his journey—through solitary confinement, court battles, and spiritual struggle—to the slow and ongoing work of healing. From tattooing as therapy to fighting patriarchal power in prisons and families, Eric explores how trauma, solidarity, and resistance intersect. We discuss paralegal activism, building an abolitionist legal strategy, the challenges of unity across tactical lines, and the danger of romanticizing suffering.

Also I would like to call out the SINISTER tactics of the IKEA in Elizabeth. I see you. I know what you are doing. Its commonly known that it is one of the best Newark planespotting locations. Need a snack? Have to use the bathroom? Why goodness there is a store right there!

The door closes behind you. Its a trap.

Two-three hours later you finally escape the Swedish labyrinth slugging around $200 worth of stuff for your house you didnt need and a belly fully of Swedish meatballs ready to go home.

You may have everyone else fooled, IKEA, but I see the dark and powerful force you truly are

Just a general tip -
When possible, it's a lot more effective to make someone's behavior not pose a bother than it is to try to convince them to change behavior.
IE - the hall light being left on is a bother to me. Getting my roommate (not you, bestie, before you) to turn it off was a battle, and involved confrontation.
The problem got better when I could turn it off from bed, and went away when I made it turn itself off.

If you can make someone's problem behavior fix itself, do that.

Hola. Buen domingo para todes. 🙂
No sé si emigrar o pediros croquetas y consuelo...

In the context of the Chatcontrol attempt to get Americans to scan our photos with AI so we can be reported to Europol, the EU has even bigger plans in this direction. And they are honestly (I am told) asking for experts to advise them on these plans. You can apply until September 1st to be part of the expert group:

Any idea what the time commitment for this is? I have a full-time job so scared to apply as someone else would probably do a better job.

But I worked both at Wire for 3 years (E2EE chat / video calling) and Feeld for 2 years (Dating app; so lots of more direct interaction with law enforcement w.r.t. sexual abuse cases, age verification, etc). so I feel like I have an interesting perspective from both sides of the spectrum.

in reply to Nanook

@Nanook Yeah, it took me altogether too long and talking to altogether too many people who just shrugged and told me "idk, friendica is slow" until someone finally pointed out to me that MariaDB by default only has a buffer of 128MB. Now, whether I'm running Hubzilla or Friendica, I have the buffer set to three gigs, and those get used. I'd like to spin up another instance, but I'd need another host just to do it.
in reply to Comrade Ferret

@Comrade Ferret There are various buffers and cache in mariadb, the most important of which is probably innodb_buffer_pool_size, I have mine set to 80G. Ideally you want this to be as large as all of your databases if you can afford the RAM because this way your server will mainly operate out of RAM which is infinitely faster than even nvme. And friendica's database load is 92-93% read and only 7-8% write so it benefits massively from cache. Others that are important particularly for friendica are join_buffer_size and sort_buffer_size because friendica does a lot of complex joins and if these aren't large enough external file system tables are used. With them both set to 256M I get about 3% overflow to files. On my system this is not expensive because the /tmp directory where it creates these overflow tables is a tmpfs memory file system, if yours is not it will benefit even more from adequate sized buffers here. And table_open_cache ideally will be large enough to accommodate all of the database tables in your database because open is a relatively expensive operation. Another is table definition cache, again as many tables as you have. query_cache_limit, here you are advised to keep under 64M because if larger it may take longer to search the cache however locally I found this to be untrue and for my server at least 38M is the sweet spot, but again I can get away with this because the machine has 256G of RAM, this particular item is a per client item, so whatever you set it to multiply that by the number of clients you allow to determine the max memory it will eat. At this point I have roughly 4 slow queries per 10,000,000 queries with a query rate of 1700 tp/s on average.
