In the context of the Chatcontrol attempt to get Americans to scan our photos with AI so we can be reported to Europol, the EU has even bigger plans in this direction. And they are honestly (I am told) asking for experts to advise them on these plans. You can apply until September 1st to be part of the expert group:

I mean, "don't do it" is kind of obvious, and hundreds of people are going to sign up and say just that.
I suspect that if they DO implement it, it probably leads to actually better outcomes, because it drives more people off of centralized crap over to the fun side of the internet.
I wonder what adds the most unique information...

That's the same process that should be used for getting communications of citizens who aren't affiliated with government.
Simple and fair, and yet they'll balk.

I suspect Whatsapp and Signal are setup to protect covert ops, and they will just pull geopolitical strings to make sure this goes nowhere...
But if it's like some kind of thing that only half the phones have it and half the people uninstall it, then whatever, no one will care...

But I worked both at Wire for 3 years (E2EE chat / video calling) and Feeld for 2 years (Dating app; so lots of more direct interaction with law enforcement w.r.t. sexual abuse cases, age verification, etc). so I feel like I have an interesting perspective from both sides of the spectrum.
