So, those of you that do your own mastering (or do it professionally, if you don't mind sharing your secrets):
1) What does your mastering chain look like? Ideally, in generic terms (eg saturation -> EQ -> compressor -> limiter rather than Fab Filter Pro 9 -> UAudio LA1176 -> Izotope MasterBlaster 9k) because I'm using stock Ableton plugins for the most part apart from the limiter
i would second @elsemusic on the importance of a couple good meters. an lufs, a max dbfs, and specto.
my chain on the last couple project was a multiband comp(sometimes, as needed)->saturator->compressor->EQ->limiter.
regarding the difference between saturation, compression, and limiting...
a saturator as you said is essentially a light distortion. but this means that to some extent you will also get a little bit of compression out of a saturator, depending on how hard you push it. more push, more distortion and compression.
the only difference between limiting and compression is in the values. a limiter is meant to be fast attack and fast release with a high Input to Output ratio (aka, VERY compressed). In fact, since musings my new mastering limiter is actually a compressor plugin set to 20:1 ratio and the timing and threshold where ever i needed it for the program.
anyways, the reason i started putting multiband compressor in front of everything is because often times what you perceive to be a tonal problem isn't an overall tonal problem but only on the attacks of one or more elements. so with the multiband you can tame the, let's say, 1k of the attack of a lead melody without sucking the 1k out of the entire mix. i did install a dynamic EQ recently, but haven't got to playing with it.
@elsemusic oh also... and i would love to hear others' opinion on this one... i use to master to -0.5dBFS, but with musings i switched to -2.0dBFS. it seems to play nicer with bluetooth audio and seems to be the standard for most internet streaming services? i feel like CD audio was always normalized straight to the 0.0dbFS mark (as long as true peak wasn't over, in which case -.1 or -.2 whatever is necessary to get there). what is going on with max dBFS values?
@benda @elsemusic Bandcamp specifically asks for -1 db masters so that's what I shoot for. It helps that I always used that as a benchmark before, figuring it gets real close to 0 db but gives you a little breathing room in case something weird is going on internally that boosts the signal at all...
@elsemusic wild. every service has a different standard. i mean i guess the good thing about shooting for -2, is i can just add, for example, one dB of gain for bandcamp.
@benda @elsemusic I mastered mine to -0.1dB which was the setting used by iZotope. Bandcamp still accepted it. When I was researching for LUFS and RMS values I determined that you just need to worry about the dB values. Other services will adjust what you submit to meet their standards anyways.
2) If you have one of two "simple tricks" that you think I should know for materials, share them! Again, keep it as generic and widely applicable as possible!

it depends on the project, but the way you listed is a good general example. Some people literally *only* want the volume evened out and it might just be a compressor with some automation on the threshold, plus a limiter. Other times, they want some extra help with punchiness, and I’ll do parallel chains with different processing for the bass and highs (which gives more control than a multiband compressor).
Hi, I’ve mostly been recording solo piano. I’ve yet to discover a compressor that doesn’t smear the sound a little. So I use the tiniest touch of equalization and then a limiter on the master bus. The most transparent plugins I have for these are the UA Precision Limiter and EQ. There’s a bit of harshness I haven’t been able to tame, so I’m not there yet. Special case I guess. Hope this helps. Oh and Seventh Heaven on a send for reverb.

I've been thinking. Android implements app permissions on top of Linux, Flatpak does it too. But why is it it's not part of the kernel?
Like all executable files would be sandboxed and would only be able to access syscalls and parts of the file system if they were allowed to. Making sandboxing the default instead of having to restrict programs.
I'm not a kernel developper so this question may be naive, but it bothers my mind. I guess part of it is because of historical reasons but are there any practical ones that make it not feasable?

The Linux kernel already has the infrastructure required for that. Heck, Android itself, including its permission system, is built atop the Linux kernel.
Making sandboxing the default instead of having to restrict programs.
What's missing for that is work on userspace software and app packaging. The kernel can't automatically know what a program should and shouldn't be allowed to do.
Some of that work has happened, like moving from X11, which really wasn't designed around sandboxing, to Wayland.
But a lot of it requires making a permission system the norm and creating a system such that software is normally distributed with restricted permissions and developers develop around that. Like, I can use firejail and disallow write access to parts of the filesystem or network access to a program, but there isn't a broad system of appropriate pre-created profiles that applications are distributed with and way to view this. We don't have a convention for an application-private space on disk and lack of access to most of the filesystem, which Android does and apps need to be written around.
IMHO, one of the largest jumps would be Valve doing this for Steam games --- a lot of games are going to be amenable to being sandboxed, don't need broad access to the system, and are closed source. There are some issues there; for Windows binaries run under Proton, WINE wasn't originally written around being isolated, and the game developers writing the software are writing to a Windows API that aren't under the control of people on the Linux side of things.
I haven't poked at snaps much or their technical underpinnings, but my understanding is that they distribute apps in a sandboxed form, so that might be the closest Linux-native approach.
