in reply to Flick 🇬🇧

@Flick"Electromagnetic waves pulsed by radio equipment form clouds:

1 - Electrically charged nanoparticles (such as in smart dust made of polymers sprayed by airplanes) bind water vapor molecules on their surface (they are hygroscopic = water-attracting).

2 - The emitted pulsed electromagnetic (radio) waves (caused by Haarp, Nexrad, mobile radio, StarLink, etc.) interact with the nanoparticles and cause them to vibrate.

3 - Since the water vapor molecules are bound to the nanoparticles, they automatically move to the rhythm of the pulsed electromagnetic waves.

The result is these cloud formations in the typical "frequency patterns / ribs / lines / waves" which can now be observed almost daily in the sky."

How To Make Your Mastodon Feed More Algorithmic

Algorithms have a bad reputation due to commercial social media, but a humble set of rules and instructions to let users choose what they see is key to making the fediverse a more enjoyable experience.

Fediverse Report - #115

PeerTube has a new update for their mobile app, the Mastodon team is growing, and more.

The News

PeerTube has officially launched their apps as a v1, some four months after the apps became available in beta. Some new features include the ability to log in with an existing PeerTube account (up until now you'd log in with a local account that only existed in the app itself), commenting from the app, and playlist and channel management options.

Mastodon announced some updates on how their team is evolving. The organisation is currently in the process of setting up a Foundation in Europe. Mastodon is also growing their team, and the organisation now consists of 15 employees. Mastodon's news update is a followup on their announcement from January 2025, in which Mastodon said that current CEO Eugen Rochko would step down. A new CEO has not been announced yet by Mastodon. In the previous update, Mastodon also said that they would need a €5 million annual operating budget. There are some new team members related to fundraising, but Mastodon has not made a clear statement yet on how exactly they will raise the money needed for this budget.

Evan Prodromou of the Social Web Foundation has published a first version of places.pub. It is a service that "makes OpenStreetMap geographical data available as ActivityPub objects." The goal is for other fediverse software to integrate with places.pub to have a standardised way to refer to geospatial objects via ActivityPub.

A follow-up on last week's news regarding the Fosstodon server: the server administration will be taken over, with an update and introduction by the new admin here.

The Links

A recommendation algorithm for PeerTube videos. It is a browser extension that records your PeerTube viewing history, and uses that to generate recommendations to watch.

PieFed development updates for April.

The fediverse statistics site FediDB is getting an update, and can now be self-hosted as well.

Reviewing Testimonials: Spotting Fake Reviews on Fiverr or Google

Fiverr and Google are full of testimonials for cheap web design services. Some are truthful, others are cooked up to trick you. Betting on fake reviews could mean tossing money at a website that’s a dud.

Shopping for a cheap web designer? Reviews are a key tool, but not all of them are legit.

Fiverr and Google are full of testimonials for cheap web design services. Some are truthful, others are cooked up to trick you. Betting on fake reviews could mean tossing money at a website that’s a dud.

Here’s how to spot the phonies.

Why Fake Reviews Are a Thing

Reviews create confidence. A freelancer with a slew of five-star ratings feels like a low-risk pick, especially at budget prices. But some sellers game the system. They buy reviews, swap them, or write their own using fake profiles.

On Google, some hire agencies to “build” their reputation.

It’s sneaky, but it’s widespread.

Red Flags to Watch

1. Over-the-Top Praise

Real clients don’t sound like they’re selling you something.

Fake:
"This cheap web design service was life-changing! Perfect work, insanely fast, total pros!!!"

Real:
"They built a site for my craft shop. It’s clean and works fine."

Excessive hype or too many exclamation marks? Be wary.

2. Empty Compliments

Legit reviews have details — project type, business name, or specific fixes.

Fake:
"Fantastic job. Very professional. On time."

Real:
"Made a portfolio for my photography business. Fixed a mobile glitch fast."

Generic praise that could fit any service is a red flag.

3. Dodgy Reviewer Profiles

Check the reviewer’s account.

  • On Google: Only one review? Posted with a bunch of others on the same day?
  • On Fiverr: No profile pic, no order history, no other reviews?

Accounts made just to drop one review are suspicious.

4. Repeated Language

Spot the same phrases across reviews?

Example: “Top cheap web designer, highly recommend!”

If reviews sound like they’re from a script, they probably are. Some sellers even reuse usernames across gigs.

5. Sudden Review Spikes

A new profile with 75 five-star reviews in a week? Unlikely.

Most happy clients don’t review. A rapid flood of perfect feedback often means paid reviews. On Fiverr, this is common for sellers chasing higher ranks.

Google Reviews: Same Tricks, Different Look

Freelancers with websites use Google reviews to seem trustworthy. Watch for:

  • Reviews from accounts with only one review
  • All five-star ratings, no variety
  • Generic names (“Jake T.,” “Sophie L.”) with no profile pics
  • Reviews posted in a short time frame
  • Stilted or recycled wording

If it looks off, it probably is.

Signs of Real Reviews

Honest feedback looks like this:

  • Plain Talk: “They built my bakery’s site. Looks good, runs smoothly.”
  • Mixed Feedback: “A bit slow on delivery, but the final site is great.”
  • Specific Details: “Used WordPress for my blog. Mobile layout is clean.”
  • Natural Tone: Like a casual chat, not a sales pitch.

Pro Tip: Reach Out

On Fiverr, you can sometimes message past clients. Ask:
"Hi, saw your review. Is the website still working well?"

Not everyone replies, but those who do can give you the unfiltered truth.

Don’t Trust “Perfect + Cheap” Claims

A designer offering premium work for dirt-cheap prices with endless glowing reviews? Pause.

Most cheap web design services are basic or spotty. That’s okay if you’re expecting simple. But fake reviews can fool you into thinking you’re getting a bargain masterpiece. You’re not.

Final Thoughts

Real reviews are raw — detailed, imperfect, and human.

When searching for a cheap website designer, don’t just glance at star ratings. Read the words, look for patterns, and dig deeper.

Spotting fake reviews saves your money and keeps your website on track.

Scripture Reading
Romans 6:8-11

We believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him: Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him any more. When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus.

in reply to blast, le souffle de l’info

How the Trump Shock exposed the delusions of Europe’s centrists - Yanis Varoufakis

#politics #imperialism #democracy #EU

Determined to remain wedded to America’s rentier economy, Europe’s and Britain’s elites will not deviate from current policies – not unless we overthrow them first. But for this, we need an agenda bolder than Trump’s and Farage’s and, of course, a radically humanist one – an agenda that is not fearful of radical proposals like a public green investment bank, a trust fund for everyone yielding an unconditional personal income, the termination of all quasi-energy markets, the socialisation of housing and, last but not least, a surge in corporations practising one-employee-one-member-one-vote.

howdy facial recognition with fedora workstation 42

I had a bunch of issues setting it up to work on my laptop, but now that I have I would like to compile all the bits and stuff together into one guide!

source: copr.fedorainfracloud.org/copr… and github.com/boltgolt/howdy/issu…

  1. install dependencies

downloading:
SEE GITHUB ISSUE SECTION “DOWNLOAD DEPENDENCIES”
(I can’t post the links!)

installing:

cd ~/Downloads

sudo dnf install \
python3-elevate-0.1.3-3.20240124git78e82a8.fc41.noarch.rpm \
python3-keyboard-0.13.5-3.fc41.noarch.rpm \
python3-pyv4l2-1.0.2-3.20240124gitf12f0b3.fc41.x86_64.rpm

installing opencv (note that I had to use pip install for opencv-python, so try that as well!)
sudo dnf install -y opencv opencv-devel opencv-python

sudo dnf install -y v4l-utils

When I tried to install howdy from “howdy-beta, an error pops up with “nothing provides python3dist(ffmpeg-python)...”

BettridgeCameron on GitHub is the holy saviour with this fix:

dnf install https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/python-ffmpeg-python/0.2.0/8.fc41/noarch/python3-ffmpeg-python-0.2.0-8.fc41.noarch.rpm

  1. installing howdy

remove non-beta howdy (it doesn’t seem to work for Fedora 41+)

sudo dnf remove howdy

sudo dnf copr remove principis/howdy

install beta howdy
sudo dnf copr enable principis/howdy-beta

sudo dnf —refresh install howdy

  1. use sudo howdy config

device-path: use ls /dev/video* or v4l2-ctl —list-devices to see all device paths and test each of them using sudo howdy test (for me it was /dev/video2)

settings to change “freedy237” recommends:
(note that howdy-beta uses different words e.g. “abort if” rather than “ignore”, make sure you have howdy-beta! This stumped me for a while)

detection_notice = true
timeout_notice = true
no_confirmation = false
suppress_unknown = false
abort_if_ssh = true
abort_if_lid_closed = true
disabled = false
use_cnn = false
workaround = input
certainty = 4.0
timeout = 10
device_path = /dev/video0 # Replace with your detected device
warn_no_device = true
max_height = 480
frame_width = 640
frame_height = 480
dark_threshold = 80
recording_plugin = opencv
device_format = v4l2
force_mjpeg = true
exposure = -1
device_fps = 15
rotate = 1

  1. use sudo howdy add to add a face.

Name it anything you want, I go with names like “glasses” and “no-glasses” since…I wear glasses. Some random person on GitHub with a multi-monitor setup has it set to looking at different monitors. Whatever you want, doesn’t really matter.

You can use sudo howdy test to check if it works. A red outline means it’s an unrecognised face, a green outline with the name means it is a recognises face. no outline means not a face. Also check that whether it is a “dark frame” or not vs a “scan frame”. You might need to set the dark threshold higher using config. (this was an issue I faced as well, for me 80 works)

  1. howdy on login

sudo nano /etc/pam.d/gdm-password

add: auth sufficient pam_howdy.so

a similar thing can be done for gnome’s password pop ups (e.g. when installing an app) by going to “polkit-1”

  1. howdy on sudo (you might not want this!)

sudo nano /etc/pam.d/sudo

add: auth sufficient pam_howdy.so no_confirmation

  1. permissions

sudo chmod o+rw /dev/video*

sudo chmod -R o+rx /usr/share/howdy/dlib-data

sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/howdy

sudo usermod -aG video gdm

sudo chmod 666 /dev/video*

sudo chmod 755 /usr/lib64/security/pam_howdy.so

  1. fix SELinux perms for login screen

create “howdy.te”
sudo nano howdy.te

add: (as seen on fedora copr repo)

module howdy 1.0;

require {
    type lib_t;
    type xdm_t;
    type v4l_device_t;
    type sysctl_vm_t;
    class chr_file map;
    class file { create getattr open read write };
    class dir add_name;
}

\#============= xdm_t ==============
allow xdm_t lib_t:dir add_name;
allow xdm_t lib_t:file { create write };
allow xdm_t sysctl_vm_t:file { getattr open read };
allow xdm_t v4l_device_t:chr_file map;

compile and insert it
checkmodule -M -m -o howdy.mod howdy.te

semodule_package -o howdy.pp -m howdy.mod

semodule -i howdy.pp

Lenin: Throughout the civilized world, the teachings of Marx evoke the utmost hostility and hatred of all bourgeois science... And no other attitude is to be expected, for there can be no “impartial” social science in a society based on class struggle. In one way or another, all official and liberal science defends wage-slavery, whereas Marxism has declared relentless war on that slavery. wordsmith.social/protestation/…

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.

2025 hardcore list of 17 linux distributions without elogind and other systemd parts
Posted on 20241228 by sysdfree-editor
Welcome antiX and Noir linux to the strict list, with edition 23 antiX is fully functional and lighter than ever without a trace of elogind!

    Edited: December 28th 2024 (replacing older strict list)

This list is going to be short and there may be a sublist of distros with a medium strict standard. We shall explain what the object is, below the short list (which we hope the community will assist in making longer as we have not been able to currently review the work of every distro and fork).

2025 list of “healthy” hardcore distros in alphabetical order with date/activity indicator (xxx)

antiX —> antixlinux.com debian fork without systemd/elogind nearly as famous and popular as Debian itself now
CarbsLinux —> carbslinux.org (Kiss fork with CPT pkg manager shinit/sinit/runit/busybox 02/2023 )

Please keep the recommendations going, for inclusion and exclusion from the list. We can not keep and maintain installations for all of them, we count on you.

Hardcore because they seem honest and dedicated to the war against totalitarianism by IBM and other mega corporations to dominate the Open and Free software world.

Basically, after some odd experiences with Nutyx and its full turn into systemd-dom, basic functionality of starting X , such as vte terminals, filemanagers (thunar and pcmanfm) was impossible. Why was it impossible? Because they REQUIRE elogind and dbus to be running in order for them to start. So off this site any further mention of Nutyx.

If such development spreads there has to be a differentiation between distros that include such crap like elogind, for obvious and overly discussed reasons, and DO NOT make their use necessary everywhere that there is no absolute need, to make it necessary. In other words, there seems to be a new trend from utilizing elogind to accommodate needs of upstream desktop dependencies, but some distros go out of their way to enforce the use of elogind EVERYWHERE THEY CAN!

There is a qualitative difference between drinking socially, a cocktail, a beer or two, some wine while dining with friends and comrades, AND being a full blown alcoholic where the first thing you do when opening your eyes, is to reach next to your couch, where you slept with your shoes on, and grab the bottle of 151′ proof rum to rinse your mouth, then swallow the mouthwash. HUGE difference!

….. and such madness was listed as systemd free linux on our long list! No more, that old list will remain to reflect the wide variety of Pid1 switchers.

In light of recent development and discovery of such development, seatd comes to compliment consolekit2 to replicate the functionality of elogind. Its use in Obarun made starting wayland and sway successful. The same developer who wrote seatd has also written greetd, a display manager that is wayland compliant without using elogind/systemd. So the common excuse “we use elogind for wayland” has run out, while with the last edition of ck2 (12/2020 note: there have been later updates to this one) the excuse of it being unmaintained is also fading. People in the BSD ecosystem are contributing plenty of development for ck2.

The difference between elogind and (ck2-seatd) is size and complexity, and it is counted in multiples. So for those who follow unix tradition of simplicity, single use, compliance with everything else, the way to go is clear.

Another proposal

What will now be a proposed as a medium strictness list? Where distros choose to make elogind available, but not absolutely necessary for all X software.

We want to believe that all forms of adelie, antiX, alpine, and Void are still healthy, we are unsure of Artix, but we will investigate and take your recommendations and suggestions as they come. Our last attempts to start X on artix without elogind were futile, but we may be wrong.

The screen is/will be:

Can X be started without elogind?

Can the most popular WMs start within that X session without elogind?

Can basic common terminals and file-managers start without elogind?

Can common file-managers work without automounting devices?

We can repeat this process with dbus, and there are situations where things start and run fine, even though they may throw some warning and errors for not accessing a running dbus channel, while being 90+% functional, and situations where they lose basic functionality. Like LibreOffice has the entire prime menu bar (File Edit View … Help) missing when started without a live dbus session, while a ton of their other icon intense menu bars work.

Medium strict list:

adelie adelie.pkgs.org
alpine alpinelinux.org
artix artixlinux.org
TinyCore Linux tinycorelinux.net (simply amazing size and functionality – elogind is present and available but not necessarily used)
void voidlinux.org
Help us fill the blanks here or remove the sick ones if you have direct current experience.

Edit Dec. 30th 2020

This (Slackware & forks) was meant to be yesterday on the list, it is now removed, sadly. It seemed to have been a nice system we neglected over the past few years. Ever since Dec 7th 2020 it passed on the other side of one of the many distros succumbing to the pressure, biting the bait, hook, line, and sinkers.

5 Slackware –> (Zenwalk and Slackel are currently reviewed, no elogind found anywhere, ck2 seems available – specific reviews are coming shortly – that is not to say that all slackware forks will adopt or maintain this commitment, and there are many many of them)

Spoke too soon, there is more elogind enforcement in Slackware than there is in Fedora!

everything being economic that is

Yeah, oh how that infuriates. The outrageously dangerous myopic-blinkered reductive conflation, a seemingly wilful ignorance that opens the doors to all manner of authoritarians to usurp with their centralised council or tyrant.

If only Marx had listened to Bakunin, more than Engels. ... And all Marxists too, heed bakunin's warning, now with added historical weight: "We are convinced that liberty without socialism is privilege, injustice; and that socialism without liberty is slavery and brutality." --Mikhail Bakunin

Much better than "well then we'll make them free" oxymoronic'ness of "communism" (as in the totalitarian's gutted and popularised use of a term originally coined by anarchists... but some people get headspun by the economics-only delusion, missing that totalitarianism is not anarchism... )

Okay, Ima stop before I write a bookload of rant on that. SO INFURIATING. ... The damage, historical, noospherical, ongoing, ... rRrRrrRrrRRRRGH! [ "to their comfort level," ... Maybe it'd infuriate me less if I remember it's a psychological protective maladaption... ]

Freedom first.

Engels was a true materialist, but couldn't escape Marx's economism.

The core idealism in Marxism stems on being individualistic and wanting a concrete theory and doctrine to appeal to the individual, ideologically, then once convinced follow/serve the "party". It is an on/off switch, you buy the idea then engage in the centralized direction of activism. Then they speak of class consciousness also as an individualist. Then they expect the managerial class of experts to develop a consciousness contradicting their own personal interests.

They even make the leap to conclude that capitalists and pro-capitalism individuals are convinced of an ideology supporting capitalism. Capitalism came to be, its evolving ideology and pseudo theory came after the fact. They just fabricated a dress to cover the monster. Marx expects to fabricate a different dress and expects some monster to appear and fit right into it.

Social relations, in particular exchange, are part of material conditions, it is not all production and consumption. Being oppressed is just as bad as being exploited, whether it is the boss at work, the teacher, the cop, the parent, the man, the white man, the husband or mother in law, what you experience is part of those material conditions. It is likely that the wealthier you are the milder the oppression, tell that to the abused wife or child, to the mistreated elderly, to the ethnic/reli/nati/racial minority ...

Material conditions, including social, provide people with enough motivation to want things changed, and the realization they must act collectively towards change is not far. If a certain ideology, theory results from collective action, then fine. But don't start at the wrong end of the pipeline.

But if you read capital book2 chapter 3 Karl explains ...

The working class has either kept away or followed total idiots for a century and a half reducing everything to economic terms. The working class keeps falling victim of its own silly vanguard that can only reform capitalism to state owned capitalists.
