A few days ago I made an account and posted a few joke/meme comments that got a lot of engagement. Unfortunately, the replies seemed to be mostly personal attacks on me disguised as jokes, when all I was doing was trying to be funny in a harmless way. I deleted that account and this one will be temporary. You people complain about this site lacking content compared to Reddit, about communities with only one person posting regularly and there not being enough niches, but how do you expect any growth to occur if the first thing someone experiences when posting on a new account is getting dogpiled on? It wasn't my first account either, it was my latest attempt to reenter the fray after feeling like I was becoming the butt of the joke on an account before that, just engaging with the community in the way that I like to. It almost felt like on both accounts my comments were being deliberately mass upvoted just as a setup to be humiliated. Some people have horrific lives IRL that would make any reasonable person want to kill themselves, and are stuck in those soul crushing situations for years and years with no way out. It would be nice to find a place to joke around and feel even just the simulated warmth of human connection without the same kind of nastiness I encounter in everyday life, so I'll keep looking. You say Reddit is toxic? I deleted my account there a long time ago, but my experience was that Reddit is like a big metropolis and Lemmy is more like a small town. Yes Reddit has jerks, but they don't tag you with their third party app and follow you around, giving you the illusion of being accepted with (probably fake) upvotes while subtly mocking everything you say and passing it off as a joke. You can blend with the crowd there and not become a target. I really, really don't want to give Reddit and OpenAI my data, but if I want a real social media experience that isn't being gatekept by assholes who enjoy bullying on the internet because they're too scared to do it IRL I may have to. I hope Lemmy can fix itself, but my experience with small towns in real life is that those "big" (small) fish in their small, stagnant pond don't want anything to ever change because the status quo suits their mediocrity and reinforces their egos. Which would be an ironic fate for the supposed "future" of social media. Almost none of the content, all of the toxicity. Why is it so hard for people to be respectful of others?
In my experience, Lemmy isn't particularly toxic, though sometimes you might run across people with a bad attitude or just might have simply had a bad day. Block those sort of people if you need to, or report them, depending on context.

earlier this week, i showed up to a protest in downtown #LosAngeles with a box of N95's, and i distributed all 50 of them within an hour. several people even thanked me! total 180 and says A LOT about the character of these uprisings.

in the last couple days ive backed up and "deleted" (for whatever thats worth) all my #google drive and photos data. way overdue, i know. but man, do i feel clean. gmail is still left, i have about 5 weeks before my storage limit goes down to whatever it goes down to when you stop paying google for storage. i will never make this mistake again. not with google, not with proton, not with whoever the next "good guy" in tech is. own your own data, be your own platform. f the corpos.

@clawfulneutral yeah we each gotta map out our own priorities and paths and support one another with whatever knowledge we've accumulated along the way. according to the mobian wiki, the google pixel 3a, which i have lying around, is totally good to go with mobian. hopefully this weekend or next, i'm going to give it a whirl and see if it can be a decent daily driver.

I don’t know if it’s a direct descendant of the program Obama started, but it’s good shorthand to refer to an extremely crappy phone I have courtesy of the federal government. in reality it’s so slow that it’s nearly unusable, so I just put it in hotspot mode and connect to it with my Poco when I’m out running around town.
I did recently move to another state that administers its own Lifeline program, which is switching to just giving out SIM cards, not sure how that’s gonna work in my case since the Poco doesn’t really speak US 4G bands, and its 3G++ capability stopped working in much of the USA like 4 years ago.
@clawfulneutral oooooh lol. i never heard it referred to as such, which is strangely ignorant on my part. it never occurred to me that a phone would become obsolete when bands change. i wonder if that could be fixed and it would be a matter of hardware or software hacking...?
sometimes it’s possible to replace or modify the software which runs the radio hardware and unlock new bands, but often that either doesn’t happen for a device (because it’s either super difficult or relies on leaks of binary firmware) or runs up against hardware limitations of the radio chip itself.
I should probably re-research if anybody has unlocked more US 4G bands for the Poco F1 (which was never intended for the US market) … however, it’s much less possible to jump generations, a 3G radio can’t be made to speak 4G, etc.
I’m not on Graphene yet, still running LineageOS for now. but Graphene is definitely on the short list for next reinstall or next phone, not sure which.
yeah, as far as I know Lineage uses vendor kernels for a given device, not sure about Graphene.
as a Debian user for many many years, it sure would be nice not to be relying on a vendor kernel, but I wouldn’t be surprised to have a lot of hardware features broken as a result. but, Mobian only supporting a few devices would focus dev efforts. and I’ve heard phones like the Poco have a big DIY scene in south Asia so there might be a lot of people working on fixing stuff.
probably worth double checking though: any #LineageOS aficionados know if Lineage uses an unmodified kernel from the device vendor, or what’s the story with that?
@clawfulneutral done checking already? Last time i checked: lineageOS runs on a self-built kernel based on source code published by device makers (gpl). Ubuntu touch and it's debian brother run on halium, a stripped down lineageOS.
I haven’t paid attention to kernel related issues on the Lineage lineage (ha) for quite a while, I’m not sure where I got the impression that they (or some in the ROM scene) were using binary kernel blobs
