in reply to Spartacus

@Spartacus How do you suppose they are going to ship it? You think maybe they're going to go through the Caspian Sea and via Russia? or perhaps through Afghanistan or Pakistan? I don't think so. You think maybe they have mines that can tell an enemy ship from their own? I kind of doubt it.

Iran has no effective air force, we do. They have not much navy either. This war isn't good for anyone, what Trump did was no doubt foolhardy, but also largely theatrical, we know we did not put a serious dent in their program, that is obvious, they were warned ahead of time so they had time to move nuclear materials in advance, the centrifuges were too deep to be hurt.

I still believe the reason we still don't have a full list of Epstein's clients is because Trump is on the list and Mossad is behind the Epstein operation. NBC News footage from November 1992 showing Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein at a party in Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. (YouTube screen capture)November 3, 2024, 2:52 pm In audio clip from 2017, Jeffrey Epstein said he was once Trump’s ‘closest friend’ Ok, it's hard to find out whether Epstein himself was Jewish but he was in the banking industry before he got into the child sex industry and that industry is dominated by Jews, especially in New York which is where he was from.

So it is still my belief that Trump was blackmailed into this and dropped the bunker busters not because he had any real hope of penetrating a mountain but to make a show for Netanyahu. Does that make him a good guy? No the fact that he could participated in behavior that allowed him to be blackmailed is not good, but I think you'd find that true for the majority of congress.

But you and I can speculate all day, it really doesn't matter as it won't affect how history plays out. I'm hoping this does not continue to escalate into a war between US / China / and Russia. I think that is the real risk, not an oil shortage.

in reply to Nanook

@nanook
This is exactly what it means for Iran to have complete control of the strait. To control who passes through and who doesn't.

The laying of mines in the sea is done in a way that will leave a free passage known only to the one who laid the mines.
It's been done all along
But the biggest mistake you're making is thinking that those who are pursuing this - and any other - war care more about human lives than oil prices.
Well, they don't.

in reply to Spartacus

@Spartacus I've had the opportunity to see some of the satellite data. Even from 200 miles up, the resolution is so good I was able to read the license plates of cars in a parking lot in spite of the obtuse angle.

But as I've stated it is just speculation, history will play out however it does, and honestly I'd much rather it play out the way you think it is likely to than the way I fear it may because at least your way we'll still be around to witness it.

I just fear with a handful of countries, two of them having more than 5000 nukes each, there is the potential for this to go a lot further south than just an oil shortage.

At any rate, I see no reason to get so hung up on the details. I think we can both agree that what Trump did was bat shit crazy and also quite the opposite of what he promised while running. But the dead is done, all we can do now is wait and see where the dust settles.

This is yet another betrayal of the American people by yet another president who clearly does not have its national interests in mind. Even if it initially looks as if things are going well for this course of action, well, Iraq and Afghanistan looked pretty good too… at first.

Trump turning neoclown also implies that the USA will renew its military and financial support for Ukraine.

libxslt project maintainer steps down, citing the amount of time it takes to triage embargoed security issues.

“I’ve been doing this long enough to know that most of the secrecy around security issues is just theater. All the ‘best practices’ like OpenSSF Scorecards are just an attempt by big tech companies to guilt trip OSS maintainers and make them work for free.”

I'm an atheist. I dated a woman once who believed in spirits. I think she experienced night terrors among other things and interpreted them as supernatural phenomena. It didn't cause problems then but I was a lot younger and I think now I'm less tolerant of that sort of thing. But who knows - I was crazy about her so maybe if I meet a woman I'm crazy about like that again then I'll tolerate anything.

More recently I've dated people who believe in a vague sort of life after death but never someone who practiced any religion. I think I would immediately rule out practicing religious people if I were going through a list (as when dating online) but if I met someone in person, really liked her, and then found out she was religious then I'm not sure what I would do. It would definitely be off-putting.

The problem for me isn't the lifestyle differences but rather my impression that religious people are missing the point about the basic nature of existence, when it really should be obvious. It makes me feel like I'm patronizing them, because to be frank I don't tend to think of them as my intellectual equals. (And I know that makes me sound like a pompous jerk.)

This entry was edited (1 day ago)
in reply to ArbitraryValue

Yea I kinda get the same feeling. Although for a lot of people their religion does not preclude the acceptation/understanding of a physical world, it's a more of set of rites that they inherited and that's part of their identity. There's plenty of religious people who are scientists. For some, I imagine it may be difficult to reconcile.
This entry was edited (23 hours ago)
in reply to Hadriscus

I know that there are religious scientists and I think humans often compartmentalize beliefs in such a way that their belief about the supernatural doesn't affect their assessment of real-world situations. I'll even go further and say that often it seems like their belief affects their behavior much less than it logically ought to, with some (but not all) people who apparently sincerely believe in an all-seeing God and an afterlife still acting just like atheists in relevant situations. In this context, the fanatics are sometimes technically the more rational ones - I disagree with their premises, but their actions make sense if those premises are considered true.
in reply to rumschlumpel

I think people's behavior is determined much more by social conventions and the expectations of their community (in addition to pragmatic self-interest) than it is by logical reasoning. I'll risk being the preachy vegetarian by discussing people's attitudes towards eating meat. Most people sincerely believe that cruelty to animals is wrong, and also that factory farming (if not all killing) is cruel. Yet they eat meat. I even know some people who started eating meat again after being ethical vegetarians. Did they change their minds about whether or not harming animals is bad? No. If pressed, they feel guilty but they don't like to talk about it. The reason they're eating meat is because it's convenient and almost everyone expects them to, not because they reasoned from first principles. Likewise with religion - if no one else is giving everything away to the poor and everyone will think you're crazy if you do rather than praising you, you're not going to give everything away to the poor even if it would make sense to do so given what you believe.

Edit: Kidney donation is another example. I met a woman once who donated a kidney to a friend of her mother's. This person wasn't someone particularly dear to her, but she found out that he needed a kidney to live and she gave him hers. I think that what she did is commendable, but I still have both my kidneys. This is despite the fact that I sincerely believe that if, for example, I saw a drowning child then I would risk my life to save him. People would think I was a hero if I saved the child, or that I was a coward if I didn't try. Meanwhile almost everyone I know would think I went crazy if I donated a kidney to a stranger. My relatives would be extremely worried, and they would try to talk me out of it. I'm not going to do something difficult, painful, and (to an extent) dangerous when everyone I know would disapprove, even if in principle I think risking my life to save another's is a good thing to do.

I think your ideas here go into the right direction, but the confusing part for me is that many of the christians I know are so far below what you'd expect from a christian in these parts (which is already very little) - it's not that they don't give everything away to the poor, they're doing (as far as I can tell) nothing - they don't pray, they don't go to church, and they don't adhere to any of what the bible says they should do beyond maybe basic Golden Rule stuff. And it's not even like most families would make a big deal out of it if you left the faith or even became fully atheist. Most do pay the church tax, though, which is about 1% of your gross income.

Palestine Action to be added to list of proscribed groups alongside ISIS and al-Qaeda - for trying to stop mass murder of Palestinians

UK's Home Secretary Yvette Cooper plans to ban - or 'proscribe' the Palestine Action (PA) anti-genocide group over the summer, according to the BBC. The move will mean PA is treated as a terrorist organisation, listed alongside the likes of ISIS and al-Qaeda - and membership of, or support for, the group will become illegal.

@jollycooperation @zleap honestly at this point israel should cease attacks, at which point the Iranians would do the same. the problem is that now it is about ego and about palestine. netanyhu cant stand the thought of admitting defeat. and even if he could, the immediate aftermath of this conflict must address palestine and the expedited genocide that has occurred since they attacked Iran.
in reply to benda

I agree, however Starmer was sidelined the other day so the UK is clearly not seen as a very 'good' ally by Trump, however the UKs idea of security is a total joke.

Boats still coming over daily
Memembers of Palestinian action just walked or rode in to RAF Brise Norton and spray painted on a RAF refuling plane.

Note: Brise Norton back in the 80s held the US Nuclear missiles

The Government response is to ban the group, duh that won't stop people, armed guards on the entrance and perimeter of the base, with the power and ORDER to either shoot or detain anyone entering.

But we won't do that.

The UK is pathetic, which could be a reason Trump sidelined us, Trump is also dismissing the EU with regard to negotiations, this suggests that all this a huge ego trip for Trump rather than a genuine attempt to bring about peace and lasting change.

in reply to benda

@benda @zleap even if the USA looses against Iran, they will clamp down on Latin America. The US may fall as a world power, but that doesn't mean they'll stop being a regional power. American Imperialism will try to reinforce their control over "their backyard", I fear a new period of coups and interventions. Mexico's security priorities are aligned with this goal (as the saying goes, "Mexico es el muro de Trump", Mexico is Trump's border wall).
in reply to argumento

If you can over throw the current regime and install a sensible government who is firm and fair this will go some way to bring anout change.

You cannot have open borders, but at the same time why do people seek to enter the US?, if you had better equality then there would be little need for economic migration, other than for say skill sharing, there would be little reason for refugees, again as there is equality in wealth.

You need to bring people in to take up certain jobs, so make this easier for people to do so, with the right visa you get afforded rights, (you may need to sort out better worker rights and unions though) So there are proper benefits to proper channels

At the same time, you cannot have people with criminal records coming, (and you certainly can't have people who have committed crime, esp serious crime as your president) so a proper robust immigration system is needed. That not only protects US citizens but ALSO protects other migrants and that includes from each other. Leave your problems at the border.

There needs to be a revolution yes, but not just against
trump but big tech and social media giants who spread mis information and lies.

in reply to Paul Sutton

@zleap @argumento from a politcal/electoral/campaigning position you aren't wrong. and one party does campaign in such a manner. neither one delivers. we need a singular issue to bring the vast majority of americans together on and its not a small task. that issue is either anti-war or anti-billionaire/corporation. and even then, they will politically or literally assassinate the candidate/group that makes any inroads with such a message.
in reply to benda

@zleap @argumento the american empire is rotten to its core. its founded on the genocide of one people and the enslaving of another. followed by a few centuries more of that all over the world.
we inspired the nazis with our border policies and jim crow laws.
we're backing today's nazis.
the system is sick. the electoral system doesn't leave room for the change that's necessary. unfortunately.
in reply to benda

I think we are stick in a catch 22 here.

Most people in the US now apparently get their news from social media, this would be fine if you can guarentee the quality of the news feed(s) which you can't, couple that with AI generated articles, which as we have discussed on here, us usually not of a very good stanard.

If you add in a lack of education in terms of being able to think, apply critical thinking to things, and seeking out several news narratives, and forming better conclusions (all of which takes efforts)

Billionaires need to maintain the status quo to remain in power, they can do that my manipulating news feeds, and taking data to generate advertising revenue,

They also need to help politics maintain the status quo so nothing then changes, as you said voted in to power then not actually DO anything.

So unless people realise what is going on, and also get there is a better way of doing things, nothing is going to change, demanding another election to vote in another party who will also fail and the cycle will start again.

Even with Cambridge Analytica and other well noted breaches of data, nothing has shifted people away from Meta platforms.

I just hope the EU goes through with the massive fine for the various breaches Meta have been found to be guilty of, and follows through with enforcement.

Ideally they can put the money in to the EU developing alternatives to US corporate solutions. We need that as the UK / EU is being isolated by Trump.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that, so far, there have been no reports of increased levels of off-site radiation following the #US bombings of Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz.

US supposedly , attack nuclear facilities.
So either they weren't nukes there or they just didn't hit them enough.

@contrasocial @disisdeguey
That's not the point I'm making. If someone argues that a Dem administration would have not moved war to Iran (at least not under the current conditions), what's the point of bringing out that Dems and GOPs had the same stance about Palestine? It's exploiting the suffering of the Palestinians to prop up a political agenda re the USA. Or to claim one's own ethical purity, which is even worse, like "who cares about Iran war victims, I was right on Nov 6th"
in reply to Eh?!?

@Eh__tweet @disisdeguey
What's the point of not participating in a vote between two genocidal candidates? Is that seriously your question?

Neoliberals hit the furthest extent that they could push us all to the far right, and that point was literal fucking genocide. You need to adjust your blame, the Harris campaign had a very easy way to avoid all this. They thought they could force us all to vote for her with the threat of Trump. Well, they can't. Learn the fucking lesson.

in reply to contrasocial

@contrasocial @disisdeguey
The point is making what's possible to avoid ADDITIONAL victims and suffering WRT what's already going on. Trump's victory brought nothing good for the Palestinians, and we now have war in Iran, migrants being disappeared in the USA, LGBTQ rights being maimed, poor people in the USA losing that minimal welfare they relied upon and counting.
Maybe more wars to come all over the world.
We may disagree on this, of course, but both PoVs deserve respect.
in reply to Eh?!?

@Eh__tweet @disisdeguey
The genocide was running at full speed under Biden, what we're seeing now is no different from what was happening, it would've progressed along the same path.

Again, maybe the Harris campaign should've considered whether defending the depravity of a far right foreign regime was worth throwing our democracy down the drain.

I completely disagree that genocide apologetics deserve respect, no matter how much respectable language they're wrapped up in.

in reply to BenAveling

@BenAveling @disisdeguey nobody said they voted for trump, they just said they don't support the Democrats, you're twisting the narrative. People want to hold them responsible for actively supporting genocide. You can't blame your way out of the democrats running on a loser platform that is pro genocide and unpopular, you lost. Get over it and hold *everyone* accountable to make things better.
This entry was edited (20 hours ago)
in reply to BenAveling

@BenAveling @GLaDTheresCake The point is that Democrats are also like Republicans. There's no difference. Obama was a war criminal as much as it was Bush sr of Jr. And we don't need democrats to win again to demostrate how sweet or not they are, BIDEN (a so called Zionist himself) helped to kill thousands of Palestinians. WE WATCHED LIVE. #donaldtacotrump it's just the continuity of #USrael policy in the last 100 years. The real terrorists disguised as "saviors" The only hope is that US empire falls once and for all, soon.
in reply to Disisdeguey🔻Pavlichenko🇵🇸

@disisdeguey
While we definitely were not doing enough to stop the Israeli genocide in Gaza, it is disingenous to say that we were the ones doing the actual bombing. Yes, we sold them the bombs but that has been US policy for years now. Neither Harris nor Biden told Netanyahu to bomb civilians> He takes full blame. But noth Harris and Biden could have spoken up more for the rights of the Palestinians. No doubt about that.

Of course now we have another distraction so we can forget about it...
