got one batch of holes done, the ones where i have to stick this pipe out the door cause it's too long to fit in the shop, thus letting all the AC air out and the bugs in.
i have about idk maybe 150 holes to friction dirll and tap. each hole requires a pre-drill, friction drill, and tapping operation. so that's 450 tool changes. tool changes are actually the most time consuming part of this, making it drag out into days of work
thus i really need an automatic tool changer. something i will definitely try to do after i move. ATC is such a game changer for speeding up mill operations and not having to babysit the machine
my mill has a threaded drawbar that pulls the tools into a taper in the spindle (R8 taper, like a bridgeport mill). instaed i'm hoping i can convert it to a hydro-lock system that uses an internal hydraulic gripper to grab a ball insert that would screw into allf of my R8 tools. it would be very expensive to have to change tooling for an auto tool changer. hopefully i can build something or find a new hydro lock spindle that isn't too expensive
@shibao there are plenty of auto tool change spindles available already that work well, my only issue is that they don't use R8 tapers. the ones i've seen on youtube for R8 use a retrofit of an electric impact driver attached to the threaded drawbar. i don't think this is optimal, due to the possibility of having it not thread properly and jam the thread, so i'm leaning more toward a design like what commercial units use, with spring loaded fingers that release with air or hydraulic power to pull a ball into the spindle. i would also like to make a thru spindle coolant channel at the same time
yes it probably would take a really long time to build this, but balance that against the time spent on tool changes over years of use, thousands of tool changes = 1000s x several minutes each. plus you gain the ability to run complete programs unattended
