What's the lawful and effective way for "normal" people to access the private communications of law enforcement and government officials, which arguably shouldn't be private at all? That's the same process that should be used for getting communications of citizens who aren't affiliated with government.

Probably also a CIA communication platform - because it's popular enough that someone having Signal tells you basically nothing about them. But if Europe says that the CIA needs to decrypt it's communications channel to all CIA agents, or else install a special "CIA-Only" app that completely outs them all as CIA agents, the CIA is gonna be like "hard no".
Also they openly admit that CIA uses/used TOR to communicate with CIA agents, and again it only works because there are enough people using it that having it installed does not positively identify someone as CIA....

Hey #fediblock a conversation got me wondering: Is there an easier way to tell which instances don't respect delete requests than just...deleting a post and seeing who doesn't delete it?
@Comrade Ferret The fediverse has a whole mix of protocols, not all of which are congruent, so even before you get into local system policies you have the issue of protocol incompatibilities. Therefore you might want to think about what you say before you say it because more likely than not it will be as permanent as the fediverse.
Firstly, most instances that reject deletes indicate such on the about page and, if it's a per-instance rule, and they announce domain blocks, the relevant api call - docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/… . Mastodon, unless running something modified I'm not aware of, categorically doesn't have this capability.
Second, just because when you delete a post and it remains on the target instance doesn't necessarily indicate they're wilfully ignoring deletes. Fediverse software in general only propagates deletes to instances it has a reason to believe have the content in the first place, think your followers, anyone who's responded to or reacted to a post, and any relays they may have configured. If I deleted an arbitrary toot on my account, one that you may have loaded manually by copying it's URL into your own instances search box, because you don't follow me and because I don't believe you to share a relay with me that relays all toots, I can't reasonably expect that toot of mine to be removed from your feed.
@Comrade Ferret Mastodon is only ONE player in the fediverse, I have a Mastodon instance (mastodon.eskimo.com) but also a Hubzilla (hubzilla.eskimo.com), and a Friendica (friendica.eskimo.com), and a Pixelfed (pixelfed.eskimo.com), and a Nextcloud (nextcloud.eskimo.com), and a Yacy (yacy.eskimo.com), although there is overlap in the protocols and some speak multiple, Friendica for example is not obligated to obey Mastodon's API or Mastodon Friendica's. It is good to the extent that they do because it is what makes the fediverse work at all, but usually one servers implementation of another's protocol is not 100%. It is good for delete's to function, else how to you limit spammers and the like, but you should not anticipate it to be a guarantee. Sites that fail to honor it, well they are going to get more than their fair share of spam.
@Nanook Yeah, I'm running Hubzilla myself. I've run Mastodon and Friendica, too, and haven't seen anything to set to ignore delete requests, so I imagine it's a bit more involved, if it's even possible with that software either.
@Comrade Ferret I don't think it is baked into the protocol of these servers but there are literally hundreds on the fediverse and there is also the potential of local hacks given that these are all open source but I think a more frequent problem is not deliberately ignoring such requests but rather incomplete protocol implementations and servers running on inadequate platform that are dropping 9/10ths of what comes in for lack of adequate resources to keep up. As an example when I first turned up my friendica instance, the database was on rotary hard drives and maxed out at about 300 tp/s, and it was consistently backed up. Now I'm running it on an 18 core/36 thread machine with 256GB of RAM and database is on RAID-1 nvme array and is capable of more than 10,000 tp/s, averaging about 1700 tp/s. People start these without any idea of the resources required. I have no doubt mine in it's infancy dropped a lot of requests. I think the bottom line is that the fediverse is not a high-reliability network in terms of individual nodes, it's main claim to fame is that by being distributed it is censorship resistant. In my view that is a VERY worthwhile objective and the reason I run so many services.
@Nanook Yeah, it took me altogether too long and talking to altogether too many people who just shrugged and told me "idk, friendica is slow" until someone finally pointed out to me that MariaDB by default only has a buffer of 128MB. Now, whether I'm running Hubzilla or Friendica, I have the buffer set to three gigs, and those get used. I'd like to spin up another instance, but I'd need another host just to do it.
@Comrade Ferret There are various buffers and cache in mariadb, the most important of which is probably innodb_buffer_pool_size, I have mine set to 80G. Ideally you want this to be as large as all of your databases if you can afford the RAM because this way your server will mainly operate out of RAM which is infinitely faster than even nvme. And friendica's database load is 92-93% read and only 7-8% write so it benefits massively from cache. Others that are important particularly for friendica are join_buffer_size and sort_buffer_size because friendica does a lot of complex joins and if these aren't large enough external file system tables are used. With them both set to 256M I get about 3% overflow to files. On my system this is not expensive because the /tmp directory where it creates these overflow tables is a tmpfs memory file system, if yours is not it will benefit even more from adequate sized buffers here. And table_open_cache ideally will be large enough to accommodate all of the database tables in your database because open is a relatively expensive operation. Another is table definition cache, again as many tables as you have. query_cache_limit, here you are advised to keep under 64M because if larger it may take longer to search the cache however locally I found this to be untrue and for my server at least 38M is the sweet spot, but again I can get away with this because the machine has 256G of RAM, this particular item is a per client item, so whatever you set it to multiply that by the number of clients you allow to determine the max memory it will eat. At this point I have roughly 4 slow queries per 10,000,000 queries with a query rate of 1700 tp/s on average.

To elaborate further, the search we were previously using on Sharkey, which leverages psql's tsvector feature, is a Sharkey only feature. It never got upstreamed to Misskey.
The default search blows chunks. It's the definition of useless. The query times out when you do a simple note search and it'd endlessly run if I took off the query timeout setting.

I do want to say that I am very cult-averse, and sadly, a lot of "intentional communities" give me cult vibes, and that's unfortunate. @violetmadder I definitely think about the ablest nature of a subsistence farming homestead or any community that depends on manual labor to exist. Within a capitalist society, I don't know a good way to have inclusive communities that can fully nurture each individual persons needs, while not working the "able bodied/minded" members to death. Mutual aid communities exist(ed) but you have to deconstruct capitalism enough, and have high enough ratio of willing and "abled" people at any given time, to do the daily work of survival for the group. As much as I'd love to provide "refuge" for a bunch of people who might benefit greatly from the environment, I (on this one single homestead) need people who can physically and mentally handle this life. I'm not equipped AT ALL to take on 100%+ of the work load, even if I wish I could. I need help myself. 😅 I know I'm not always running at 100% and as my body starts to go, (it's done wonders for my mind) I don't see anyone stepping up to do this back breaking work. "Many hands make light work." But it also has to come from a place where there are enough "able" hands in the first place. When tech starts doing the manual labor that would create more egalitarian societies, instead of just making a few people rich, that's when we will see a fair and just society.
This is the most important function of the worst-off underclass: the reservoir of NEED, always held at the ready for our oppressors to weaponize as a BURDEN.
Any place or group that successfully achieves enough of an anti-capitalist oasis to start providing for people's needs in any meaningful way, attracts attention. From the occasional cities that manage to establish good programs, to an Occupy camp, to a person's own house and self, when you establish a functional system and a reputation that you are able and willing to help, sooner or later here comes the accelerating trickle of desperation showing up at your door.
Our current system is designed to overwhelm those that do the right thing.
Just look at how healthcare is churning out burnout on an industrial scale. The most generous, naturally helpful and empathic people in our society go into caregiving professions where they get used up and spat out heavily damaged. Compassion fatigue, PTSD, despair, pinching people until they have to retract their caring instincts-- intensifying the burden on those still reaching out to try.
Capitalism by its nature will even create bullshit jobs, WASTING the work of able bodies and productive minds, just to make sure everyone is being worked to death as much as possible, to maintain the working class in a state of exploitable precarity, and the underclass in a sufficiently nightmarish state of squalor.
The fate of humanity tips on this scale-- the positive feedback loops created by care, vs the negative feedback loops created by cruelty and neglect.
I have been reminded this week that even tho it's very inviting to burn it all to the ground and start fresh, it really is "easier" and wiser to modify what doesn't work, than to start with nothing and build from scratch. Evolving systems might not be pretty or perfect, but they ARE evolving, if you don't keep burning it to the ground. #community

I checked in on someone I haven't seen in almost 10 years. At the time we met, he was kinda lefty and was just starting this gig doing work in evictions. He kept the same gig this whole time and he's racist as fuck now. So he got to telling me all types of horror stories of black and jeet tennants, child neglect, animal neglect, battered women, blood stains. Absolutely nightmarish subject matter. The worst was a case of animal neglect where the nigger left his dog tied up on the balcony for over a week, no food, no water. The dog tried to escape, hung itself and was just left there to rot until his team could come in and clean out the place.
It is basically summed up like this. Some baby momma or deadbeat will go out there, crash out in traffic or at their job or in a store, get arrested, can't pay their bills because they live paycheck to paycheck. He's going in to where the criminal lived at the end of the month to witness how these niggers lived.
