What is helpful, as a new user, to find things you are interested, is use the search function to find posts that are of topics you are interested in, then follow those people, then Friendica will start showing other people associated with those and if you choose to follow them, expand on that. It takes a bit more patience than say Facebook but you can control what you want to see more finally and you can share with a large audience but it takes time to build followers, etc.
