Canonical Make Me No Happy

I installed a copy of Ubuntu 25.04 into a virtual machine just because I wanted to grab their most recent kernel config for 6.14.x to compare it to my own to try to figure out why my configuration breaks nvidia display.

What a clusterfuck. Now that bastard Poettering has taken over the login function with systemd-logind and what a pile of shit.

From a graphical terminal, with the sole exception of gdm3, I can not login as any user other the one I created at install time, and even with gdm3 I can not login as root.

Window 11 Linux Style Here We Come. Fuck You Canonical. Guess I'm going to be forced, after 14 years, to switch distros again.

@Basketball Stars I feel your pain. I've been a Debian user for over a decade, and the increasing influence of systemd has been a point of frustration for me too. While I haven't been forced to switch yet, I find myself looking at alternatives like Devuan more and more. Thanks for sharing your experience!

@CrazySlope2 I get the frustration. One of the reasons I’ve been moving more of my hobby projects to simple browser-based stacks is exactly this — fewer hidden layers, fewer things silently taking over core functions.

Devuan might be the right move if you want to stay closer to the old philosophy.

Wow, that sounds like a frustrating experience! Dealing with login issues after an update is never fun, especially when it involves display drivers and kernel configs. Reminds me of that feeling when you're just trying to relax and play something simple like Snow Rider 3D but technical issues get in the way. I hope you find a solution or a more stable distro soon. It's a bummer when a long-term relationship with a system goes sour. Good luck!
