Delta had a mechanism where it disabled the cilia in the epithelial cells. This allowed it to get into the lungs of some even healthy individuals. To be sure if you had comorbidities you were at much higher risk but there was some risk for everyone. Omicron lacks this particular characteristic. It does not cause cilia entanglement and so the cilia do their job and keep it out of the alveole.
