Had a retarded deer hit the truck earlier. I was driving next to a wheat field at around 40 mph with the family when it happened. We had gone out for a little drive to watch the fireflies and the deer must have been laying down in the ditch and at the last second it got up and ran smack onto my driver's side door. It spun around and hit my rear door before bouncing off onto the road and running away. Had my arm dangling out the window to enjoy the cool night air and it smacked right into my forearm and elbow, but it didn't even leave a bruise. No idea what the repair bill is going to be. Both doors are dented up, not too bad but definitely noticeable. My window still works but I can hear it clunking whenever I roll it up or down.

in reply to [msg] Bajax • • •@f0x @nanook (there's different types of evasive maneuver they try sometimes. sometimes they run directly away--those squirrels tend to survive, even if they stupidly run into the middle of the road. other times they do this super complicated back-and-forth zig zagging, that seems like it'd be great for getting away from a cat, but doesn't help at all when trying to get away from a car-- especially since they seem to *never* dive for the side of the road.
some years it seems like we have more zig-zaggers, others more straight-runners. this year is a zig-zagger year. I already hit one in april. the damned fool thing started dancing around in a blind curve, I had probably less than a second to get to my brakes.
I wonder if there's some reason we don't get squirrels that can react to the specific threat they're facing at the moment rather than just panicking and defaulting to something that could be wrong)
