What is a Shell Account?
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. It is provided along with shared web hosting under our domains. It allows you to:

  • Develop or edit your website interactively
  • Schedule tasks (e.g. automatic updates)
  • Run background jobs and applications

Unlike most providers, Eskimo North gives you access to eight Linux distributions plus SunOS, with full remote desktop support via X2Go (with sound), NX, VNC, and RDP.

Account Types
We offer four levels: Economy, Standard, Power, Enterprise.

  • Background tasks (IRC bots, game servers, etc.) allowed on all except Student
  • MySQL databases included with Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max
  • IRC servers not permitted (to prevent DDoS risk)

Web Hosting
All shell accounts include web hosting under our domain. You can also:

  • Host your own domains with virtual hosting
  • Run LAMP stack applications
  • Develop in all GNU-supported languages

Remote Desktop
Access your full desktop environment anywhere in the world. Supported protocols: X2Go, NX, VNC, RDP.

  • X2Go recommended (efficient compression, sound support)
  • Available on all servers except SunOS

Applications
Office Suites: LibreOffice, Calligra (MS Office compatible)
Development Tools: Bluefish, compilers, interpreters, debuggers, profilers, scripting languages, online docs.

E-mail

  • Access via shell mail readers, Thunderbird, webmail, POP3, IMAP (TLS encrypted)
  • Bayesian filtering with SpamAssassin (user configurable)
  • Procmail for sorting, Smartlist for mailing lists

Security

  • SSH access to all servers
  • Remote desktop protocols tunnel via SSH
  • Weekly backups and up-to-date patches
