HER salary is 13% less than HIS.

On #EqualPayDay, we symbolically mark the date when women stop earning compared to men. For every €1 a man earns, a woman earns only €0.87.

So, from today until 31 December, it is as if women in the EU effectively work for free.

Our message is clear: Equal work deserves equal pay.

We are committed to tackling pay inequality with legislation on:

🔹 pay transparency
🔹 gender balance on boards
🔹 minimum wages
🔹 work-life balance

@hajovonta there are many ways the gender pay gap is calculated! I'd highly recommend the Wikipedia article on it. Basically it's when a woman works the same job as a man (same title, position, hours, etc.) but still earns less.

Additionally the problem is that male-dominated fields surprisingly pay more. There are two different gender pay gaps and the E.U. is using the latter.

@janwedek @hajovonta @pclark36 yeah, exactly: what risks are there with employing a woman? They may get pregnant? Oh, how horrible. Justifies paying someone 10% less across the board even though they may never do that. Let's not discriminate based on gender...

Additionally: think of society as a whole. Where does this rhetoric stop? Should your boss know your medical records? After all, there are risks associated with hiring a cancer patient, someone with ADHD or any other illness that may cause them more sick days. Oh, you don't like that rhetoric when it could happen to you? Exactly.

Also: women do more unpaid labor than men do. Taking care of a child and household may not be paid, but it definitely is labor. If we do argue FOR a gender pay gap in terms of risks, then certainly men should be paid less. Women, due to often being stay-at-home-moms, have much less saved for retirement, not because they work less, but because taking care of a child is an unpaid job. That creates systemic inequality across the line making women constantly dependent on their husbands.

So, yes, removing the gender pay gap is the least we can do to make things fairer. Additionally, women should be paid by either an employer or the government for staying at home, because someone gotta do it (if a father wishes to stay at home or both sides share the job equally, of course they should be paid too).
