The U.S. State Department’s latest report on Cuba revives allegations against U.S. solidarity activists that were made by the FBI and CIA in the 1960s and 1970s — claims historian Teishan Latner says were never proven.
In this interview with Belly of the Beast journalist Yohan Rodríguez, Latner discusses the history of U.S.-Cuba solidarity, the Venceremos Brigade, the Black Panther Party and growing pressure on people in the U.S. who oppose Washington’s policy toward Cuba.
He also examines whether the report is helping lay the groundwork for military action against Cuba.

On a serious note, I feel US policy towards Cuba and the world in general is stupid, it treats the world as a zero sum game, but that's not the reality, and with respect to Cuba we have a situation where we don't want something 90 miles form our territory in the Russian sphere of influence.
But I would ask this, if I were a small nation next to a large belligerent nation, and that nation were keeping me in abject poverty, would I want to be like them? Or would I be more likely to want to be like them if they allowed me self determinism but provided good standard of living and freedoms for their citizens? I think the latter which is why in my view our treatment of Cuba is not only unreasonable, it is foolish.
