The Van Allen radiation belts, while posing a radiation hazard, are not necessarily a major obstacle for human spaceflight due to the relatively low levels of radiation experienced during transit and the use of shielding. Astronauts flying through the belts are exposed to radiation, but the exposure is generally low enough not to cause significant harm, particularly if they are shielded by the spacecraft and travel through the belts quickly.
