Shooting Down Unidentified Objects

Maybe it's just me but seems to me that shooting down unidentified objects is perhaps not the brightest plan. A Chinese spy balloon okay, but tic-tac and hexagonal shaped objects which have yet to be identified perhaps not such a good idea.

There are islands in the Pacific and there are some in the Aleutians that we do not step foot on because the native inhabitants either find us tasty or threatening and in either case tend to end life rather quickly. Granted, we could drop a nuke and eliminate all the hostiles in an instant but we are wise enough to realize they are simply not very developed so we leave them alone. I imagine for the majority of interstellar travelers view our planet the same way, but sooner or later we're going to run into that minority that will just view us as something worthy of extermination.

So perhaps attacking everything in the sky without identifying it first is not such a wise idea?
