@Lotoscott cadmium telluride is only 4% of the installed solar panel capacity and tends not to have a long life and it is toxic. Crystaline silicon is 96% of the installed base, it is more expensive but is generally good for 30 years or more. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust after oxygen. Personally, unless you've a load that corresponds well with max solar like air conditioning in southern California, it doesn't make much sense to me.
