I’ve been running a small Friendica instance for a little while now, mostly for friends and a few community members, and recently I noticed the server load spikes heavily during federation updates and background tasks. The server itself isn’t very powerful, so I’m trying to find a balance between performance and keeping the important social features active.

I wanted to ask other admins here: what settings or optimizations made the biggest difference for you? Did adjusting cron frequency, database cleanup, caching, or limiting certain federation options noticeably help? I’m especially interested in solutions that don’t require moving to more expensive hosting right away.
