Friendica.Eskimo.com Hubzilla.eskimo.com Network

Our router at the co-lo facility is running short of CPU during peak traffic times in the evenings resulting in greater latency and some packet loss.

I am currently researching a replacement which will have approximately 6x as much CPU to accommodate this traffic and future growth.

The current router is an Edgerouter Lite which has two 500 Mhz MIPS CPUs, the replacement I’m looking at is a Ubiquiti Dream Machine, which has four 1.7 Ghz cores. The latter is designed for an enterprise environment.

The Dream Machine comes in a lot of different flavors and I’m not familiar with all the terminology used in the specifications so I’m waiting on Ubiquiti support to answer a few questions before placing an order.

Web Server Upgraded

Finally got the web server upgraded. Don’t really know what went wrong last night, pretty much repeated the same procedure but this time after I had finished the compile environment still worked so I was able to recompile apache2 and have it use the newer openssl 3.0.2.

So all of eskimo.com including friendica.eskimo.com, hubzilla.eskimo.com, and nextcloud.eskimo.com, and all the hosted websites are now running under Ubuntu 22.04.

Happy Mother’s Day + Maintenance Notice

I wish to wish all of you who are Mother’s a very happy Mother’s day!

My mother has been gone from this planet for about a decade now. She was the wisest woman I’ve ever known in my life. Lived a hard life but threw her best effort at it. She is with the Lord now I am sure, she was a good woman.

Today I also tested negative for Covid so in spite of being 63, diabetic, with high blood pressure and overweight it didn’t succeed in killing me! Well now I have natural immunity without having had a clot-shot. I know there are still people who believe in that thing but I would suggest strongly you avail yourself to some of the 75,000 pages of data Pfiezer was forced to release. Strangely, I have had some folks be angry at me for not taking the clot-shot but I’ve not endangered anyone as I completely self-isolated for the duration of the disease.

And on a final note, I will be taking the web server down again tonight for a while making one more attempt to upgrade. I actually had it working briefly under 22.04 last night but with the wrong version of openssl, and trying to correct that resulted in a chain reaction of deleted software owing to new dependencies in 22.04 that are going to require some work-arounds, so I had to revert to the previous backup.

End of life for the OS on the web server happens this July so push is coming close to shove. After that there are no security updates and the web server is perhaps the most exposed server in terms of the total number of services it makes available to exploit so it is of particular importance to keep current.

This will affect all web sites hosted under Eskimo North shared hosting plans as well as friendica.eskimo.com, hubzilla.eskimo.com/, nextcloud.eskimo.com/, and eskimo.com.

The plan is tonight to get it into the same state where it is on 22.04 but still running the old openssl, then write backups, then work on correcting that which unfortunately is going to also require fixing much of my build environment which upgrading to 22.04 also broke.

Web Server Maintenance

Posted on May 6, 2022

I am going to make another attempt at updating the distro on the web server, if it fails there will be about a half-hour downtime to restore from backup, if it succeeds only a few minutes to reboot.

Past attempts have failed because of library version mis-matches, I believe I’ve got a way to identify and fix the offending libraries.

This will impact friendica.eskimo.com/, hubzilla.eskimo.com/, nextcloud.eskimo.com/, eskimo.com/, and all the shared hosting sites we host.

It's Aliens

If you were a radiation hardened interstellar race, having a body able to withstand extreme radiation because you've been traveling in space and exposed to cosmic rays and other extreme radiation sources for many many generations, your DNA having a much larger proportion of cross-links, your DNA encoding many more double-strand DNA repair mechanisms and overall redundancy, and you wanted to colonize our star system and in particular Earth, but there were these annoying rodent brained hominids currently occupying it, what would be better than the convince them to depopulate themselves, convince them their energy source was toxic, and even possible convince them to have a nuclear war?

Web Server Maintenance 10pm-11pm Pacific Daylight Time (GMT -0700)

Posted on May 1, 2022

Now that I’ve removed a number of unused PPAs, removed “Proposed” packages, and hopefully gotten the web server better prepared for a distribution update, I am going to take the server down for approximately an hour between 10pm-11pm tonight to make another image backup prior to another distribution upgrade attempt.

This will affect friendica.eskimo.com/, hubzilla.eskimo.com/, nextcloud.eskimo.com/, and eskimo.com/ as well as any shared hosting customers during this interval.

Ubuntu and WebServer Maintenance 10PM – 11PM Tonight

I am going to take the shell server, ubuntu.eskimo.com, and the web server www.eskimo.com down for maintenance tonight between 10pm-11pm to make backups prior to upgrading from Ubuntu 20.04 Focal to Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy.

After the backups I will begin upgrade. I do not anticipate long downtime for Ubuntu for the actual upgrade, only a reboot, however the webserver will take someone long as the change from OpenSSL 1.1.1 to OpenSSL 3.0.1 will require recompiling httpd.

This will affect friendica.eskimo.com/, hubzilla.eskimo.com/, and nextcloud.eskimo.com/ as well as all virtual domains hosted with us. I do not expect this to take more than 10-15 minutes for the actual upgrade as apache should continue to run until I reboot.

More to the Fediverse

There is more to the Fediverse than Mastodon. I feel it necessary to point this out since Mastodon seems to recently have felt it necessary to spam the entire fediverse 30 times a day to promote their software.

Personally, I much prefer friendica because of full length articles and comments rather than Toots which tend to result in just quick quips and no intelligent discussions.

Covid - With Comorbidities

I have three co-morbidities, I am diabetic, I have mildly high blood pressure, and I am obese, and I am also 63.

I am on my 5th day of Covid. With the exception of some digestive tract upset it has basically been a moderate cold, some upper respiratory congestion and that's it. Now on the 5th day that congestion is largely clearing but I still have a knot in my stomach.

Certainly nothing life threatening to me. And I am unjabbed.

Yes, it's manufactured! I have a few chickens in my back yard - just three hens and a rooster. And i decided to get some silkie chicks a couple of weeks ago because silkie hens go broody very often, and they will hatch other hens' eggs and raise them and then I won't have to incubate or do any of the work and I'll be able to produce more chickens then. Well, I bought six chicks and one died the first day. The next day a second chick got sick and died the next day. Then one of the chicks got sick and then recovered. Then a fourth chick got sick and died the next day. Now it's been a week and a half since the last one got sick and died. And I still have three chicks and they are looking great and healthy. Here's what I think: I think it's wrong that they are killing the sick chickens (if they even are sick). Two of my chicks didn't get sick, and one who did get sick fully recovered, and now they probably have strong immune systems. As far as spreading the virus - I don't think it would spread very far because when those chicks of mine got sick, they stopped moving and then laid down until they died. How can they spread sickness if they stop in their tracks when they get sick? But obviously, no one cares about common sense, and the plan is to take away our food supply. Those bastards.

Freedom Box

If you download as a disk image, it is using btrfs file systems. I've never been fond of them because of stability issues but I thought well, it's been a few years since I last played with them maybe has improved. Well, my instance lasted about two weeks before it ate it's file system. The other thing I did not like is that it was setup for a standard BIOS and would not boot on a UEFI system, so for both of these reasons I decided instead to start with a Debian Bullet virtual machine and install freedom box on it, but after doing so it rendered the networking totally non-functional, so now I'm trying to troubleshoot that.

Mail and Web Maintenance

I intent to take the mail and web servers down tonight at 11pm Pacific Daylight Time (GMT-7) to make backup images. This is just a way to quickly restore the mail server or web server if something catastrophic happens to their file systems. The mail server should take about 1/2 hour and the web server probably similar. Don’t know exactly as I have not made an image backup since moving it to flash storage.

This will affect friendica.eskimo.com/, hubzilla.eskimo.com/, and nextcloud.eskimo.com/.

Kernel Upgrades Friday 4/15 11pm-Midnight

I’m going to upgrade all of the system kernels to 5.17.3 on Friday April 15th between 11pm and midnight Pacific time.

I would have stuck with the 5.16 kernel until hell froze over if Linus had chose to make it a long term supported kernel, but unfortunately he did not. 5.15 did not perform well and is the previous long term release. As near as I can tell, a kernel has to have garbage performance in order to be considered for long term support.

Anyway, I expect reboots to be done by 11:30 and then the next half an hour will be fixing any broken NFS/NIS mounts and given that they’ve done major work on NFS, probably will see some new unfamiliar NFS issues. So if this update runs past midnight that is probably why.

This will effect all Eskimo’s web services including our main website eskimo.com/, nextcloud nextcloud.eskimo.com/, friendica at friendica.eskimo.com/, and hubzilla at hubzilla.eskimo.com/.
