“Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen [...] This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the ICJ’s binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalized for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade—their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately.”

I don’t know, asshole, was 1947 worth it? Was close to 80 years of settler colonialism and apartheid worth it? Is the current genocide of the Palestinian people being committed by israel worth it? ravenation.club/@welkin7/11465…

Israel had already declared what it was going to do. This was bound to occur. About baby formula, food and medical supplies, the Palestine authority should step up and handle it.

Gaza strip had zero Israel troops prior to 7-Oct-2023. It had hospitals, schools and electricity. Now significant portion of Gaza is rubble and it is crawling with Israeli troops.

The loosers are people on both sides. How many classes have children of Gaza missed? Was Oct 7 worth it?

“All those on board have been abducted. They have been taken against their will while they were sailing peacefully and lawfully in international waters…

They were in international waters, sailing towards Palestinian territorial waters, not getting near Israeli waters…

It needs to be made very clear that Israel has absolutely no jurisdiction, no lawful authority, to take over this vessel.”

Iodé is Android, but with all Google software removed. It uses Lineage OS as a base, but adds a built-in ad and tracker blocker that runs at all times, locally on the device.

The ROM itself will be familiar if you ever used a Pixel. On the Pixel 5, Iodé OS 4 was preinstalled, and it's based on Android 13. The latest security update was on January 5th 2023. The Iodé team told me they provide security updates every 2 months, and every month for beta users.

The default experience is as close to stock as can be: you have either the 3 button layout of Android, or the gestures, a dock of apps at the bottom, an app drawer by swiping up, and a few preset widgets.

In terms of apps, Iodé ships with a Firefox fork by default, which disables telemetry, trackers and enables alternative search engines right out of the box. The default email client is Pretty Easy privacy, or pEp. It's a simple email client with an easy interface, that adds end to end encryption capabilities to any mail account.

For Maps, you get Magic Earth, which is also open source, and uses OpenStreet Map. The keyboard is OpenBoard, the camera app is OpenCamera, which, while very powerful, has a terrible user interface and looks pretty bad.

Iodé comes with a tracker blocker built in. This thing works using a man in the middle attack style: the OS intercepts all communications and requests that go out of your phone, and blocks everything that's part of the blocklists. These blocklists are collaboratively sourced, and include a LOT of adblock and tracker blocker related things. This system is based on Energized Protection, which is an open source project licensed under the MIT license.

To complement this, there's a preinstalled app that lets you check out how many requests you've blocked to how many recipients.

Iodé OS relies on 2 app stores: you get F Droid for all your open source app needs, and you get the Aurora Store. Installing apps works very well, I encountered 0 problems here.

Where you'll have issues is running apps that depend on Google services. I tried installing the Youtube app, and it never opened. Other Google apps got me the same experience, like the youtube studio app. Stuff like Google Maps or Google Photos worked, but were unable to use the already added Google account in micro G.

After reaching out to the Iodé team, they told me they have identified the issue, which is fixed in the beta, and will be patched in the next OTA release.

Interestingly, stuff like my banking app worked immediately on Iodé, letting me use the phone as my secure device to authenticate purchases online, something that is usually blocked because the device doesn't pass SafetyNet checks. Here, it all worked perfectly for me.

Compared to Lineage OS, it adds all these tracker and ad blocking capabilities. You could probably replicate that yourself on Lineage, but at least here, it's setup right out of the box.

Compared to something like /e/, the latter has more advanced privacy features, with the ability to scramble your location at the press of a button, and more complete privacy controls.

But /e/ also deviates a lot from stock Android, with their own launcher, their own forks of open source apps, and generally an experience that won't appeal to everyone.

A new paper criticizes the capabilities of LLMs in reasoning and formal logic. It builds on previous arguments made by Gary Marcus and Subbarao Kambhampati about LLMs' limitations in generalizing beyond their training distribution.

The paper argues that LLMs are not a substitute for well-specified conventional algorithms and have limitations that are becoming clearer. The the field of neural networks is not dead, but the current approach has clear limitations.

Just a reminder that Nobel-prize winning PCR (1983), used in basically any genetic tech today, was only possible because of an extremophile bacterium discovered in 1964 in Yellowstone funded by a small ~$80k NSF grant with no obvious application at the time. The value of basic #science cannot be predicted and often is realized decades after it's done.

A team at Beihang University in Beijing made the breakthrough by merging binary and stochastic logic, enabling fault tolerance and power efficiency.

The team overcame challenges in today's chip technologies, the power wall and the architecture wall, by proposing a new numerical system.

Saw that the IDF has boarded the Freedom Flotilla and arrested everyone aboard: abc.net.au/news/2025-06-09/isr…

Worth remembering that the IDF killed nine people on the Freedom Flotilla in 2010, and injured thirty, so it's not as bad as it could have been. Maybe the high profile of Greta Thunberg helped.

But as they say, it's not about this boat or these activists. It's about the people, including the children and the little babies, starving to death in Gaza as Israel calculatedly denies them food, and locks up the measly trickle they are allowing in behind a ghoulish series of death traps. Good on the Flotilla activists for trying to shine a spotlight on that #FreePalestine 🇵🇸

Melbourne people: there's a snap protest tonight at the State Library in support of the Freedom Flotilla activists. Copy-pasting from the post on the Students for Palestine Instagram:

"The Madleen Freedom Flotilla has been attacked by Israel and the activists onboard have been kidnapped.

"We demand that our government immediately sanction Israel for their attack on the Freedom Flotilla, their siege on Gaza & cut all economic, diplomatic and military ties with the state of Israel." #FreePalestine #AusPol

Watched "The Running Man" with the older kids tonight as Dystopi-June continues. What a quintessentially 80s movie. They all enjoyed it, even the super-cheesy one-liners. I admit, the movie gets more right than I had remembered. TV/Propaganda - Corporate ownership of gov't - easily manipulated people through media consumption - AI used to reinforce narratives . . . etc.

Kudos to Richard Dawson, though. He really steals the show!

@Peaceandprosperity @Chadtoshi Nakamoto You can, people did, and they described cherenkov radiation's effects on their eyes as they went through. To quote Gargoyle:

The Van Allen radiation belts, while posing a radiation hazard, are not necessarily a major obstacle for human spaceflight due to the relatively low levels of radiation experienced during transit and the use of shielding. Astronauts flying through the belts are exposed to radiation, but the exposure is generally low enough not to cause significant harm, particularly if they are shielded by the spacecraft and travel through the belts quickly.

Translation from french

A solidarity from workes all over the world against genocide in Gaza, not only at French:

>The cargo ship that was supposed to bring weapons to Israel left Fos-sur-Mer without its cargo.

June 7, 2025 Good News , War , Middle East , Solidarity

-There can be no talk of "participation in the ongoing genocide orchestrated by the Israeli government." The dockworkers at the port of Fos-sur-Mer near Marseille said this and put it into practice.

"This week, everything happened very quickly. On June 4, the investigative media outlet Disclose revealed that an Israeli cargo ship was scheduled to dock in the French port the following day to secretly load 14 tons of spare parts for machine guns. These parts are manufactured by the French company Eurolinks, based in Marseille. Immediately after this information became known, the CGT port workers' union in Fos-sur-Mer announced that the "container of Eurolinks links [...] had been made available" and that the workers would not "load it onto the ship."

Not only were these critical military components for assembling ammunition left at the dock, but the dockworkers also blocked two other containers of rifle barrels from the Aubert et Duval company that were to be transported to Israel on the same ship. On Friday, June 6, the ship finally departed without the cargo it was supposed to pick up in France. The CGT (Central European Customs Workers' Union) subsequently supported the action, declaring: "Customs officials do not want to be complicit in this genocide. Customs can enforce an export ban on weapons and weapon parts, so let's do it!"

In retaliation, police arrested the general secretary of the CGT union at the port of Marseille. He was "interrogated for several hours by investigators from the finance brigade" about a 2014 case that apparently had nothing to do with the union action. A low-level maneuver that creates few illusions.

This fine initiative throws a spotlight on the shame of the French government, which, while publicly claiming to condemn the situation in the Gaza Strip, continues to authorise the supply of weapons of war.

After Fos-sur-Mer, the ship was scheduled to dock in the Italian port of Genoa this weekend. There, too, the workers took the initiative and organized a rally at the port entrance. Dockworkers in this city have been protesting against Saudi arms deliveries for the war in Yemen since 2019. Since then, the dockworkers have organized themselves into a collective and regularly protest against their involvement in war crimes. For example, they refused to load containers destined for Israel in 2023.

Last summer, a massive US military tanker capable of carrying 300,000 barrels of fuel crossed the Mediterranean to supply and refuel Israeli warplanes. In Spain, the ship was prevented from docking in Gibraltar due to the mobilization of pro-Palestinian groups. It was unable to dock at the port on July 30, 2024.

Further actions took place outside Europe. On April 20, 1,500 people demonstrated in Tangier, a major port in northern Morocco, against the docking of a container ship chartered by the Danish shipping company Maersk. It was suspected of transporting parts for military aircraft to Israel.

Dockworkers in Tangier refused to load the equipment: "18 of the 20 crane operators on the first shift" went on strike. Two days earlier, a large demonstration against the ship's arrival in Morocco had taken place in Casablanca, leading to clashes with police. On April 14, the Moroccan Dockworkers' Union called on "workers, users, and infrastructure managers in the port of Casablanca to boycott the ship."

In the fall of 2023, the port of Oakland, California, was blockaded for several days to prevent a ship loaded with weapons bound for Israel from leaving. Hundreds of people took turns disrupting port operations, while others chained themselves to the ship's entrance.

War relies primarily on logistics: the production and supply of weapons, technology, fuel, transport, etc. Without workers, no military operation is possible. Strikes and blockades have always been the best means of preventing militaristic massacres and genocides.
