It may be the case that McConnell is providing hard rhetoric while still couching it in "how they define victory." but it seems likely that he really wants a forever war.

After all, he's a republican.

Eventually, enough messaging goes out there that also breaks up the narrative they push.

That resolutely traditionalist country, basically all of southern Italy and Sicily, fascinated me. The first ships arrived from Naples with 884 former members of army of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies to take up arms for the Confederacy in early 1861. That number of Neapolitan volunteers soon rose to approximately 2000.
